POSITION SUMMARY:
UW-Madison is accepting applications for a tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor with tenure in International Studies beginning August 20, 2018. Successful applicant will engage in the intellectual life of their home department through teaching, scholarly research and service. Successful applicant will be expected to teach two courses per semester with half in the International Studies Major and half in their tenure home. The appointee is expected to teach International Studies 101: Introduction to International Studies in rotation with other IS faculty as well as specialized courses in the area of the appointee’s expertise. Scholarly research and service also required.

Arizona State University’s Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship to begin in July 2018. The one-year fellowship is open to early-career scholars who received their PhD in or after June 2016, whose work combines regional focus with global relevance.  As well as conducting their own research, the Melikian postdoctoral fellow will teach two seminar classes at ASU’s Barrett Honors College; participate in Melikian Center workshops and events; and contribute to the Center’s public profile through community programming, grant-writing, and/or generating content for the Center’s online presence. Post-doctoral appointments at ASU do not offer tenure, but may be renewed annually, subject to funding.

Academic Job: Visiting Humanities Fellow (DePaul)

External Faculty Fellowships: Visiting Humanities Fellows. All applicants must have a Ph.D., and research projects must be in the humanities. International applications will be considered. Fellowships may run from September 2018 to June 2019, or from January 2019 to June 2019. During their tenure, Visiting Fellows are required to make an intellectual contribution to the DePaul community and participate in the programming and activities of the DHC and the university.

DePaul University is especially interested in applications that involve a project around the theme of “Filth,” broadly construed. All applications regardless of topic will be considered, but preference will be given to applicants that draw connections between their proposed project and the 2018-19 DHC theme, “Filth.” NB: The DHC will be hosting events that include, e.g., investigations of environmental ethics, LGBTQ identity, race, pornography, drug usage, radioactivity, etc.​ They are interested, that is, in interdisciplinary, creative, innovative projects that take up the topic.

“The World of Print(s): Multiples and Meanings in Early Modern Europe and North America”

The Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities will host a year-long interdisciplinary faculty seminar to explore the significance of printed words and images in Early Modern Europe and North America. Though the current age is often considered unique in terms of the amount of information constantly flooding the airwaves and the Internet, it is important to historicize the current phenomenon in comparison to the Early Modern period when there was an explosion of printed materials that similarly saturated the West. The advent of cheap print in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries meant that larger audiences than ever before had access to the marketplace of written words, some serious and thoughtful, some salacious and sensational.  Images on woodblocks combined with moveable type made possible the publication of a variety of illustrated texts as well. The visual culture brought about by the advent of this technology in the Early Modern period was the backdrop to the work of some of the greatest printmakers of all time.

The seminar participants will put printed works—comprising both textual and visual elements—at the center of an analysis that sees them as representations of discourses external to the objects and, at the same time, as material things. Seminar participants will draw upon contemporary scholarship through various disciplinary lenses, including literary theory and art history.  By bridging a variety of disciplines, scholars in the seminar will produce a synthetic view of Early Modern visual culture and its role in shaping political and social opinion. This collaborative work will lead to new perspectives on current debates regarding the presentation and circulation of information and images in the twenty-first century.

We invite applications for the William S. Vaughn Visiting Fellowship from scholars in all disciplines whose lively presence will help to focus our work and stimulate discussions.  The successful applicant will have completed the terminal degree in her/his field at the time of application and will have a record of scholarly publications, research, or creative expression. The seminar will meet regularly and will also allow the Visiting Fellow ample time to pursue a major research project. The combined interests of the Visiting Fellow and the Vanderbilt Faculty Fellows will determine the form and content of seminar discussions.

The Visiting Fellow is provided with a spacious office within the Center’s own building. The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures is seeking to fill a tenure-track position in Migration and Diaspora Studies in East/Central European and Russian literatures and cultures. Viable candidates should have a background in the migration of persons and ideas across and outside of the region, as well as work in East European/Russian diaspora communities and their literatures/cultures, and in translation and interpreting of languages and literatures/cultures. Under the supervision of the Language Coordinator and the SILP Associate Director, Language Instructors deliver lessons using a communicative, content-based approach and contribute to the day-to-day operations of the program.
