Assistant to the Director (Education Program Coordinator)
Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies
The Assistant to the Director for the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies will assist the Director by teaching courses in REES, organizing events, assisting with grant writing, and office administration.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
Job Description
20% -Teach in REES-related curriculum, e.g. REES 110/111, Understanding Russia and Eastern Europe, and REES 220/221, Societies and Cultures of Eurasia; develop course curricula, materials, lectures, grade and assess students, hold regular office hours; conduct undergraduate student advising for REES majors and minors in cooperation with the Advising Office.
15%-Center Events – Organization of conferences and special events (e.g., lectures by visiting scholars, round-table discussions, professionalization presentations and panels). Other projects as required (i.e. university-mandated Program Review). – Provide programmatic and recruiting information to professional organizations.
10% -Grant writing/Reporting. – Collect/submit IRIS report data dealing with curriculum and outreach activities; conducting research for and writing institutional grants (working in cooperation with faculty and staff in REES and other units), conducting research for and editing institutional grants written by the director.
10% -Visitors. – Assist long- and short-term visiting scholars and lecturers. Tasks: correspondence with prospective visitors, preparing visa applications, creating itineraries, airport pick-ups, arranging lodging, helping visitors with necessary university and federal paperwork, helping with initial set-up (furniture rental, opening bank account, setting up utilities, etc.), assisting visiting lecturers with course preparation.
25% -Office Tasks/administration. – Handling drop-in visitors. – Editing and proofreading other staff members’ documents, handling tasks passed on from director, answering phones, etc. Assist in preparation and editing of the center’s newsletter, graduate and undergraduate brochures, and help with other announcements concerning the center. – Monitoring KUEA CREES funds as coordinated by the CREES office manager. – Scheduling REES courses, generating course lists, gather enrollment and graduation statistics for NRC reporting. – In coordination with CREES office manager, assist in monitoring REES main email account, answering and forwarding messages as appropriate. – Other duties as assigned to assist the director
15% -Brown Bag/Kino/Laird Essay Contest. – Organizing weekly Brown Bag talks and monthly movie presentations. Tasks: Arranging schedule of speakers, creating advertisements (in cooperation with student assistant), introducing weekly meetings; administering the annual Laird Essay Contest.
5% -Connections with the public. – Researching and developing opportunities for partnership between CREES and the business community in NE Kansas and NW Missouri. – Providing translation; fielding inquiries requiring area knowledge.
