Internship: Culture.pl in Warsaw (Adam Mickiewicz Institute)

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute, which is funded by the Polish Ministry of Culture,​ is accepting applications for semester-long unpaid internships during the academic year. The internship is open to UT graduate students and undergraduate students in their junior and senior years as well as recent graduates. Internships will take place at the Warsaw editorial office of Culture.pl, a leading website about Polish culture run by the institute.

Requirements:

• Current student at UT-Austin
• Outstanding writing and editing skills (in English)
• Previous experience with website content management systems and/or social media
• Interest in Polish culture

Knowledge of Polish or enrollment in Polish language study or tutoring is preferred, but not required.

Duties:

Interns will collaborate with the editorial team of the English version of Culture.pl. They will be expected to work on-site, Monday-Friday from 10am to 4pm during the duration of the 2-3 month internship (exact dates to be arranged with Culture.pl staff).

The intern’s daily duties will include:

• Preparing press materials for publication on the website
• Compose or edit written content about Polish culture
• Promote the website through link building and social media activity
• Publish content on the website
• Assist the web publishing team with the upkeep of the website

Please clearly state your interest in whichever area you are hoping to work
and describe your qualifications in the area in your cover letter.

Note: Must either plan to study Polish while in Warsaw, be interested in Polish cultural studies, or have Polish language background to qualify for this funding.

Interns must cover all travel costs as well as rent, food and entertainment while in Warsaw. Interns who receive the professional development award must also agree to and complete the following conditions:

1. Write and submit a news article with photos about their experience while abroad to be published on both the Slavic Department and Austin Polish Society website.
2. Write a thank you letter to the donors of the Austin Polish Society, who have made funding for the scholarship possible, and plan to speak about the experience at an Austin Polish Society member meeting upon return to Austin.

Travel: Summer Internships in Siberia (“Cosmopolitan” Educational Center)

Deadline for Applications: Ongoing Until Filled

“Cosmopolitan” Educational Center invites students to participate in their language & creativity summer camps that will be located in the beautiful Altai area and in the delightful countryside just outside Novosibirsk from mid-June until early August, 2018. Applicants are welcome to participate as an international intern teaching English to Russian children, supervising a creativity workshop and learning Russian with our professional teacher. Join the outdoor adventure tourism program of the Altai Mountains session that comprises rafting, horseback riding, hiking, camping, excursions. Get a first-hand experience of the creative program of the session in Novosibirsk and enjoy the sites of the capital city of Siberia. Tours of Novosibirsk and trips to the beautiful Siberian towns of Tomsk, Irkutsk and to magnificent Lake Baikal will be organized between and after the camp sessions. The internship fees are very reasonable.

Internship: Remote/Virtual Internship (The Hoover Institute)

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University seeks qualified SLAVIC, TURKIC, AND RELATED language students to audition and describe digitized recordings from its Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcast collection [https://www.hoover.org/library-archives/collections/radio-free-europeradio-liberty-records].

Under the direction of professional archivists, contributors will have the opportunity to gain career-relevant experience while contributing to the work of the institution. The program has been designed to provide practical experience to graduate students – students are encouraged to apply work on this project to capstone projects or independent study courses – however recent graduates, undergraduates demonstrating exceptional skill and volunteers unaffiliated with academic programs are welcome to apply.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Contribute to the organization and access to historical broadcasts in the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty collection by generating brief (2-5 sentence) English-language descriptions of digitized sound recordings. Travel not required; all work can be performed remotely. Training provided by Hoover.

Internship: Digital Editor Intern (Russian Life Magazine)

Russian Life magazine is seeking a Digital Editor intern to curate and compile its weekly e-letter, The Russia File, and to play an active role in the magazine’s growing digital footprint in 2018. This is a part-time internship that is scoped at 2-3 hours per week and has a modest stipend.

Requirements

  • Superb English writing skills (native English).
  • Ability to write succinctly, quippily, and knowledgeably about Russian culture (with little or no need for style editor intervention).
  • At least intermediate Russian reading ability.
  • Excellent online search, fact-checking, and news survey skills.
  • Excellent sense of humor and a taste for offbeat, under-the-radar news.
  • Basic HTML skills and comfort with CMS and online blog editing systems, including image manipulation, or willingness to gain this skill.

Travel: American Home’s Alternative Spring Break in Russia (Vladimir/Murom, Russia)

Participants do not have to speak Russian to join the program.

Below is a short description of the two options for Alternative Spring Break:

VLADIMIR (March 3-11, 2018):  Help several community organizations, including the Youth Health and Education Center, Karl Liebnicht Orphanage, Russian Orthodox Church, Handicapped Children’s Association “Light”, Vladimir Regional Veterans’ Home and others, while interacting with Russian university students and experiencing the delight and wonder of provincial Russia.

MUROM (March 10-18, 2018): Help university students at the Murom Institute (an affiliate of Vladimir State University) to improve their English language skills; prepare audio and video materials for their English language program.  During the Soviet period Murom was a closed city.  Today it remains isolated from traditional tourist routes.  Foreign language faculty and students are eager for contact with native English speakers.

Funding: Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship (Howard U.)

The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to attract outstanding young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). If you want to work on the front lines of some of the most pressing global challenges of our times — poverty, hunger, injustice, disease, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and violent extremism – the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development provides an opportunity to advance U.S. foreign policy interests and reflect the American people’s compassion and support of human dignity. The Payne Fellowship, which provides up to $93,000 in benefits over two years for graduate school, internships, and professional development activities, provides a unique pathway to the USAID Foreign Service.

The Payne Fellowship encourages the application of members of minority groups who have historically been underrepresented in international development careers and those with financial need. The fellowship is named in honor of longtime development champion, the late Congressman Donald Payne. The initiative is funded by USAID and administered by Howard University. Funding: Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program (TWC)

Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship Program provides graduate students with financial support, mentoring and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career with the U.S. Department of State. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Pickering Fellowship Program Benefits

  • Up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses for a two-year master’s degree in fields related to the Foreign Service such as business administration, economics, public policy, international affairs, and other relevant fields.
