Fall 21 Student Internship Program (US Department of State)

Opening Soon

Our Fall 2021 Student Internship Program will open for application soon for one week only.  This is a limited amount of time to apply for these positions; we encourage you to start preparing today.  Here are three steps you can take: 

  1. Learn about the Student Internship Program 
  2. Create your USAJOBS account, build your resume, and get your transcript 
  3. Research the U.S. Department of State’s Bureaus and Offices to find the right internship opportunity for you.

Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship

Position Summary

Freedom House is seeking three (3) motivated candidates to inaugurate the nine-month Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship program. Freedom in the World is Freedom House’s flagship analysis on political rights and civil liberties in 210 countries and territories. Produced since 1973, it is the most widely read and cited report of its kind, used on a regular basis by policymakers, journalists, academics, activists, and others. The most recent edition of Freedom in the World, published in March 2021, was cited in the Washington Post, the Atlantic, NBC News, CNN, the BBC, and in a March 3 speech about US foreign policy by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, among many other places.

Prof. Devt: Summer Online Research Internship (SRAS)

Deadline: May 20, 2021

SRAS will be offering free summer online research internships.

These will be flexible – based on student interests and student schedules – and allow participants to build up their portfolio of published works via the SRAS Family of Sites.

Current topics of interest center on Eastern or Central Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. They include sport teams, movies, video games, fashion brands, and music groups/artists based there. We will also be open to articles on art, contemporary literature and food. We are particularly interested to hear from heritage speakers of minority languages or Caucasian languages who can research in those languages, provide first-hand perspectives, and potentially contribute to our Talking Phrasebooks. Students with an interest in translation are also encouraged to apply.

Application deadline is May 20. Internships will run from approximately June 1 – July 30, but with a high degree of flexibility.

Editorial Internship at Culture.Pl (for UT Students)

Deadline: April 15, 2021

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is accepting applications for semester-long unpaid internships during the academic year. The internship is open to UT graduate students and undergraduate students in their junior and senior years as well as recent graduates. Internships will take place at the Warsaw editorial office of Culture.pl, a leading website about Polish culture run by the institute.

Requirements:

• Current student at UT-Austin
• Outstanding writing and editing skills (in English)
• Previous experience with website content management systems and/or social media
• Interest in Polish culture

Knowledge of Polish or enrollment in Polish language study or tutoring is preferred, but only required to receive travel funding.

Max Kampelman Fellowships (Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe)

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe seeks candidates for its Max Kampelman Fellowship program. Named for a longtime U.S. Ambassador to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, Kampelman Fellows represent the next generation of American leaders in security policy, human rights, and strategic communications.

Kampelman Fellows join a team of world-class experts at an independent, bicameral, bipartisan, inter-branch federal agency. The Helsinki Commission advances American national security and national interests by promoting human rights, military security, and economic cooperation in 57 countries. Fellows regularly interact and work on policy with Congressional offices, executive branch officials, foreign diplomats, civil society, and the broader policy community.

Call for Applications: ASEEES Internship Grant Program

ASEEES is pleased to announce the 2021 competition for the Internship Grant Program: www.aseees.org/programs/aseees-internship-grant-program

This program provides MA, PhD, and professional school students and recent graduates with grants that make it possible for them to accept unpaid or underpaid internships in areas directly related to Russian studies. The program promotes the entry of young scholars with considerable Russian studies expertise into sectors outside of traditional academia. These internships must be in the US and should be substantial in duration and responsibilities, lasting two months for summer internships and four months for internships during a semester in the regular academic year. The grant offers $2,000 a month, to be paid directly to the grantee during their internship.

Item Writer/Editor Consulting Opportunity (American Councils)

Deadline: Open Until Filled

American Councils for International Education is looking for experienced Item Writer/Editor to work on a federally funded test-item development project for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. The Item Writer/Editor will write multiple choice questions based on an English-language translation in addition to reviewing and revising items throughout the development window. All work will be done remotely through an online item development interface.
Assessment items will be either listening or reading items targeting various levels of proficiency on the ILR scale. Consultants will be provided with training on item development and the item specifications as well as the item-development interface and procedure.

Fully-Funded Academic Fellowships in Russia (American Councils)

Deadline (extended): February 15, 2021

Provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Councils Academic Fellowships in Russia program (AFR) will support U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars as they conduct research for three to nine consecutive months on topics within the social sciences disciplines in Russia. 

The total value of each fellowship ranges from $10,000 – $45,000, with actual level of support depending on the duration of the overseas research period and the academic rank of the awardee. Typical awards include: 

  • International airfare 
  • Academic affiliation with a leading local university or educational institution 
  • Visa(s) arranged by American Councils in collaboration with host institutions 
  • Housing and living stipends 
  • Health insurance 
  • Ongoing logistical support from American Councils 
  • 24-hour emergency assistance
