Internship: Online Research with SRAS

Deadline: November 20, 2020

SRAS will be hosting a flexible winter break internship for talented student writers looking to pick up some publishing credits and a scholarship to put toward future study abroad or online study with SRAS. Dates are flexible to fit any winter break.

Students will write short articles on pop or folk culture for the SRAS Family of Sites.

Heritage speakers of minority or Caucasian languages are particularly encouraged to apply.

Online Research Internships (SRAS)

Deadline: November 20, 2020

SRAS is offering online research internships over winter break 2020. If accepted, you will be researching and writing about popular or folk culture for SRAS sites. Internships are flexible and SRAS editors will work with you to assign tasks that are both of interest to you and fill the needs of the SRAS Family of Sites. The internship dates are also flexible – to be able to best fit the individual winter break taken at your university.Research Topics and ProjectsCurrent topics of interest center on Eastern or Central Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. They include sport teams, movies, video games, fashion brands, and music groups/artists based there. We are particularly interested to hear from heritage speakers of minority languages or Caucasian languages who can research in those languages, provide first-hand perspectives, and potentially contribute to our Talking Phrasebooks.

You will be able to propose specific topics or have them assigned to you. Once topics are approved, you will produce a cycle of 6 short articles, each a minimum of about one page (500 words) in length which introduces their subject and gives links to more information. Articles will be edited by SRAS editors and you, with guidance from SRAS editors. Completed articles will be published on PopKult.org or Folkways.Today.

Scholarships for Completed Internships

Interns who complete a minimum of 3000 words of published writing will be awarded a scholarship. A choice of scholarship is offered: EITHER a $200 scholarship towards your next SRAS study abroadOR $75 that can be spent on SRAS online courses or donated to an SRAS scholarship fund for other study abroad applicants. Those who use the scholarship toward study abroad can also still use stackable SRAS Challenge Grants to fund their studies!

Alta Emerging Translator Mentorship Program

Deadline: November 30, 2020

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is approximately nine months. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project.

Alfa Fellowship Program

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Over the course of the program, fellows complete work placements at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and receive intensive language training.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend, accommodation, insurance, all program-related travel costs, language training in Russia, and private tutoring in the U.S., U.K., or Germany.

The Alfa Fellowship Program was founded in 2004 with the aim of fostering a community of emerging leaders who have first-hand experience in the business, public policy, and cultural environments of Russia and the region. Since then, over 200 Americans, Britons, and Germans have been able to experience the workplace, while living and traveling in Russia through this unique professional opportunity.

Key goals of the Alfa Fellowship Program are to expand networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals, develop greater intercultural understanding, and advance knowledge of Russian affairs in the West.

The program is funded by Alfa-Bank, and is administered in the U.S., U.K., and Germany by Cultural Vistas and in Moscow by the Fund for International Fellowships and Cultural Dialogue.

Internship: Russian Studies, Council on Foreign Relations

All who are selected to participate in CFR’s Blavatnik Internship Program and Robina Franklin Williams Internship Program receive training in the field of foreign policy and international affairs as well as skills training in writing, research, program planning and much more.

Russia Studies team focuses on U.S.- Russian relations and current affairs across the former Soviet Union. The intern will deepen their understanding of the current and historical trends between the two countries. They will gain a strong skill set on policy-related research and editing skills.

Internship: Virtual Student Federal Service (US Department of State)

The Virtual Student Federal Service is the largest virtual internship program in the world. It is a U.S. Department of State-run program to harness technology and a commitment to global service among young people to facilitate new forms of engagement. Working from home or college and university campuses in the United States and throughout the world, Virtual Interns are partnered with our U.S. diplomatic posts and domestic federal offices to conduct digital diplomacy that reflects the realities of our networked world.

Students work remotely on projects up to 10 hours per week from September to May, and can have a flexible schedule during the school year. This allows students to meet both their academic and virtual internship goals.
