Funding: Research Fellowships in REEE Area (American Councils)

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for the next cycle of U.S. Department of State Title VIII Research Fellowships in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships are offered in two categories:

Title VIII Research Scholar Program:

Provides full support for research in policy-relevant fields in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training Program:

Provides full support for research and individualized language instruction in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; logistical support; and up to 10 academic hours per week of language instruction. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

Internship: Summer Online Research Internship and Submissions Open for Student Journal (SRAS)

The SRAS Summer Online Research Internship is a highly flexible program that builds student resumes with publishing experience! Students who complete the program also earn $200 towards a SRAS study abroad program OR $75 that can be spent on SRAS online courses. Writing topics are highly varied and tailored, in part, to student interests. The application deadline is May 20^th. More information can be found at https://sras.org/internship.

Vestnik, the student journal started and supported by SRAS, is also currently accepting submissions. Student writing on any subject and time period related to Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia, and the Caucuses is accepted. CFP: Student Essay Prize Competition (Midwest Slavic Association)

The Midwest Slavic Association is now accepting submissions for the 2021 Midwest Slavic Association Student Essay Prize Competition. The deadline is May 14, 2021. Eligible undergraduate and graduate students can submit a paper on any topic related to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies to the Midwest Slavic Association for consideration. See below for eligibility details and guidelines on submissions. The best undergraduate paper will win a one-year membership to the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), and the graduate winner will receive a one-year membership to ASEEES, as well as being considered then for the ASEEES Graduate Student Essay Prize at the national level. This competition is made possible through the support of ASEEES.

Three Postdoctoral Researcher Positions

The “Modernizing Empires: Enlightenment, Nationalist Vanguards and Non-Western Literary Modernities” (NONWESTLIT) Project, funded by the European Research Council, will hire three postdoctoral researchers in the following areas:

– 19^th century Russian literature and culture

– 19^th century Ottoman literature and culture

– 19^th century Japanese literature and culture

The project is a comparative study of cultural reforms, linguistic renewal and literary renaissance movements in three imperial traditions, Russia, Turkey and Japan. The project is hosted by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LILEC) at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna).

The Association for Women in Slavic Studies (AWSS) Patricia Herlihy Graduate Research Prize is awarded annually to fund promising graduate-level research in any field of Slavic/East European/Central Asian studies by a woman or on a topic in Women’s or Gender Studies related to Slavic Studies/East Europe/Central Asia by a scholar of any gender.

Position Summary

Freedom House is seeking three (3) motivated candidates to inaugurate the nine-month Freedom in the World Junior Fellowship program. Freedom in the World is Freedom House’s flagship analysis on political rights and civil liberties in 210 countries and territories. Produced since 1973, it is the most widely read and cited report of its kind, used on a regular basis by policymakers, journalists, academics, activists, and others. The most recent edition of Freedom in the World, published in March 2021, was cited in the Washington Post, the Atlantic, NBC News, CNN, the BBC, and in a March 3 speech about US foreign policy by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, among many other places.

Literatura: an online course in Ukrainian literature and culture

Intensive summer course: 10 June- 29 July 2021

This online course is for anyone who is interested in Ukrainian literature. The course will discuss the romantics and the avant-garde, the modernists and the dissidents, the post-modernists and the feminists as well as the rich literary scene of contemporary Ukraine. Each seminar will be delivered by an expert in the field of Ukrainian literature. All texts will be read in the English translation and made available to students enrolled on the course. No prior knowledge of the Ukrainian language or literature is required to enrol on this course.
