Call for Submissions: 2021 National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest (ACTR)

The American Council of Teachers of Russian is pleased to announce the 2021 National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest! Registration for the contest is open now. Deadline for registration for the 2021 Contest is Feb. 8th. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED! The contest should be held from February 15th to the 25th, and all essays must be submitted by Feb. 28th.

Please note that, barring any COVID-related setbacks, we hope to announce the essay contest results by mid-April. For more registration details and more information about the administration of the contest this year, please visit the ACTR website.

Prof. Devt: Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia (Middlebury)

The Graduate Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey welcomes applications for the fifth Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia which will be held online from June 28 through August 4. We welcome applications from your best graduate students as well as emerging experts with commitment to the field of Eurasian Studies. Advanced Russian language skills are required. English and Russian are the working languages of the MSSR. The Symposium is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Prof. Devt: International Studies Research Lab (U. Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

The Center for Global Studies (CGS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is excited to announce the 2021 International Studies Research Lab (ISRL), an initiative that promotes the internationalization of community colleges nationwide. CGS invites applications from faculty, librarians, and administrators interested in expanding global and area studies curricula, instruction in less commonly taught languages, library collections, or international education programs at their home institutions. The Center is a National Resource Center supported by Title VI funds from the U.S. Department of Education.

Hansen Leadership Institute Fellowship

The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) brings together and trains future leaders from across the world in order to promote world peace and international cooperation.

HLI provides training in the principles, practices, and psychology of effective, ethical and visionary leadership. We also train Hansen Fellows to be effective communicators and public speakers. In recent years, we have begun to expand our focus to gender issues in leadership as well. The intense, 24/7 face to face community of our three-week program becomes a path to a vibrant virtual hub, where Hansen alum engage, connect, and mutually support each other’s projects of peace and community building.

Funding: Language Teaching and Learning Research Grants (SLI, University of Pittsburgh)

Deadline: February 10, 2021

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) at the University of Pittsburgh will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site or remotely at Pitt’s Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) in June–July 2021. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered.

Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects. However, please note that applicants should be prepared to conduct their projects entirely remotely in the event that pandemic conditions prevent the 2021 SLI from offering in-person instruction, and/or if University of Pittsburgh restrictions on non-essential travel prohibit the use of grant funds to cover travel expenses in Summer 2021.

Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) is designed as a 5-week open-enrollment course for language educators beginning to learn about Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). Successful learners will be able to describe essential features of high quality PBLL and to generate high-quality ideas for projects using the Product Square. Registration and the content for this MOOC (massive open online course) is FREE. However, if you wish to earn the optional digital badge for completion afterwards, you will need to meet the badge criteria and pay a nominal fee ($25) to have your submitted materials evaluated by NFLRC staff.

Funding: Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities

The Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities program supports national or regional (multistate) training programs for scholars, humanities professionals, and advanced graduate students to broaden and extend their knowledge of digital humanities.  Through this program NEH seeks to increase the number of humanities scholars and practitioners using digital technology in their research and to broadly disseminate knowledge about advanced technology tools and methodologies relevant to the humanities.

Applicants may apply to create institutes that are a single opportunity or are offered multiple times to different audiences.  Institutes may be as short as a few days or as long as six weeks and held at a single site or at multiples sites; virtual institutes are also permissible.  Training opportunities could be offered before or after regularly occurring scholarly meetings, during the summer months, or during appropriate times of the academic year.  The duration of a program should allow for full and thorough treatment of the topic; it should also be appropriate for the intended audience.

These professional development programs may focus on a particular computational method, such as network or spatial analysis.  They may also target the needs of a particular humanities discipline or audience. 

K-12 Russian Language Addition to Teaching Licenses

The Robert F. Byrnes Russian and East European Institute (REEI) of Indiana University seeks to expand the ranks of qualified and licensed pre-college teachers of Russian in the United States through an initiative that is funded by its Title VI National Resource Center grant from the US Department of Education.

In many states, currently licensed K-12 teachers with proficiency in Russian can add Russian as a subject area to their current teaching licenses by passing a standardized test or tests for Russian (ACTFL, Praxis, or other). REEI is prepared to cover the cost of such testing.

The American English Program has been helping Vladimir residents to learn English since 1992 and currently has more than 600 students each semester who are taught by a group of American and Russian teachers.

PROGRAM BENEFITS: monthly stipend, room and board, three hours per week of one-to-one Russian lessons with faculty trained to teach Russian as a foreign language, thorough teacher orientation and ongoing teaching support from 2 full-time teacher trainers, textbooks customized specifically for our program, a pleasant and well-equipped teaching environment, full Russian visa application support, complete on-site administrative support from an excellent Russian staff, and much more.

TEACHER OBLIGATIONS: Plan and teach four (possibly 5) 1½ hour classes that meet twice a week, hold office hours, present a brief “Saturday lecture” on an aspect of American culture, airfare to and from Moscow, visa fee, TESOL certification.
