Virtual Open Research Laboratory (University of Illinois)

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Slavic Reference Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are pleased to announce a Call for Applications to its Spring 2021 Virtual Open Research Laboratory (VORL) Program. The program will take place January 25 – May 5, 2021. Funded in part by the U.S. Department of State’s Title VIII Program, the VORL Program provides research stipends and long-distance library support for specialists conducting research on all aspects of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

The program is open to a wide range of researchers, including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, independent scholars, professionals in government and nongovernmental organizations as well as library science.

Fully-Funded Academic Fellowships in Russia (American Councils)

Deadline (extended): February 15, 2021

Provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Councils Academic Fellowships in Russia program (AFR) will support U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars as they conduct research for three to nine consecutive months on topics within the social sciences disciplines in Russia. 

The total value of each fellowship ranges from $10,000 – $45,000, with actual level of support depending on the duration of the overseas research period and the academic rank of the awardee. Typical awards include: 

  • International airfare 
  • Academic affiliation with a leading local university or educational institution 
  • Visa(s) arranged by American Councils in collaboration with host institutions 
  • Housing and living stipends 
  • Health insurance 
  • Ongoing logistical support from American Councils 
  • 24-hour emergency assistance

Online LiteraryTranslation Summer School (University of Bristol)

Event date: July 5-8, 2021

Language Teaching and Learning Research Grants (University of Pittsburgh)

Deadline: February 10, 2021

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) at the University of Pittsburgh will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site or remotely at Pitt’s Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) in June–July 2021. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered.

Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects. However, please note that applicants should be prepared to conduct their projects entirely remotely in the event that pandemic conditions prevent the 2021 SLI from offering in-person instruction, and/or if University of Pittsburgh restrictions on non-essential travel prohibit the use of grant funds to cover travel expenses in Summer 2021.

What do you imagine when you think of “home” and “homeland?” Join us to learn how our new website investigates Russian writers’ “mapping” of their war-time homeland. Around 1917, as Russia itself crumbled, older ways of thinking about the country gave way to fresh, more vibrant images and feelings of place. “Poetic Geographies” is creating a literary topography of Russia during the years of war and revolution, based on an innovative concept of place and grounded in our expanding database of more than 600 works by writers, both famous and unknown, who lived and wrote in these tumultuous years.

Alta Emerging Translator Mentorship Program

Deadline: November 30, 2020

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is approximately nine months. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project.

ASEEES Virtual Convention

Join us for the Virtual Convention in November. With over 500 panels and roundtables, a film series, and networking activities, the virtual convention is a great opportunity, especially for those who have not been able to attend the in-person conventions in the past, to learn about latest scholarship and meet colleagues in the field. Registrants will also have a access to session recordings after the convention. The virtual convention website will become available in late October.

Register by October 7
Regular registration ends on  October 7, after which the registration fees will be higher. You must be registered in order to access the virtual platform, which will become available in late October. We also ask that you consider donating ASEEES so that we can offer more waivers to support graduate students and scholars in need to participate in the convention.

Professional Development Workshop: Networking in Washington, DC (Clements Center)

Event Date: October 13 at 4 pm CT

As part of the Clements Center’s mission to prepare students for careers in public service, we are pleased to host a Professional Development Workshop on Networking in Washington D.C. featuring former Clements Center students, Kelsey Ritchie and Maria Pereyra-Vera.  At the workshop, our panelists will talk to students about how to network, the etiquette of networking, and their own personal experiences networking in D.C. This workshop is designed for all students interested in careers in public service in the federal government, intelligence community, military, and large-scale international organizations. Maria is currently Special Assistant in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Kelsey currently works for Deloitte’s defense and national security consulting practice.
