Prof. Devt: STARTALK Summer Program on Pedagogy (Middlebury)

The STARTALK Institute at Middlebury is intended for current and prospective teachers of Russian. The principles of second language acquisition and proficiency-based instruction will serve as the foundation for this intensive pedagogy program.

The Institute is a fantastic place for teachers of Russian – novice and experiences alike – to explore the principles of second language acquisition and proficiency-based instruction amidst the blue mountains of Vermont. It includes 10 days of online classes and a residential session on campus, both required.

Online Session: June 24 – July 3, 2019 (required)

Oral History Projects in the Russian-Language Curriculum

In this webinar, Benjamin Rifkin and Colleen Lucey discuss how oral history projects can be used in the Russian language curriculum to the benefit of students, departments, and community partners. The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides short-term seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Each seminar features educational lectures and activities specifically designed for the group, including visits to local schools and organizations, meetings with teachers and students, and visits to cultural sites. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new, cross-cultural curricula for their classrooms and school systems back in the U.S.

In 2019, summer programs will be offered in the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, Taiwan, and Uruguay. A total of 48 awards are available (16 per program). The program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Teacher participants are responsible for a cost-share of $600. Grad Program: Summer Medieval Slavic Institute (Ohio State)

Medieval Slavic Summer Institute 2019

A four-week intensive program hosted by the Hilandar Research Library, the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies, and the department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University.  The Institute (MSSI) offers lectures in two areas: Practical Slavic Codicology and Readings in Church Slavonic. Manuscript material on microform from the Hilandar Research Library’s extensive holdings forms a large part of the lectures and exercises. There is also a program of lectures on related topics, and other activities.

The 10th Biennial Medieval Slavic Summer Institute is open to qualified graduate students from universities that do not have a tradition of teaching Slavic Cyrillic palaeography, codicology, and readings in Church Slavonic.

Internship: English language teaching assistant or TEFL educator (Kazakhstan)

The Center for International Programs, also known as Bolashak international scholarship administrator, has recently launched a new program to attract foreign volunteers into Kazakhstani universities. It supports implementation of the government program to enhance trilingual capacity of our education system and ultimately aims to back a state policy in boosting a share of Kazakhstani population speaking English.

Volunteers will be working as English language teaching assistants or TEFL educators from 1 up to 6 months in any local university or college. The university will be taking care of their accommodation and meal for the entire duration of the program (some host institutions may cover roundtrip flight tickets).

This program provides students pursuing a degree in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies with an opportunity to discover Central Asia whilst teaching English at local universities.

Translating Russian text into English and proofreading text translated by others is the main focus of this summer internship in Voronezh. Translation projects could be as complex as fairy tales or as simple as bank statements. Whether you aspire to be a translator or just want to perfect your language and regional knowledge, this internship lets you experience Russia as if you had moved to work there.
Timing: One to three months. Can be combined with other Crossroads Eurasia internships (e.g. teaching or camp)
Russian proficiency: At least 4 semesters of Russian or equivalent (or heritage speaker)
Past experience: None required.

As we conceive of monumental breakthroughs throughout history and across cultures, we look to individuals and movements that have challenged the status quo and broke with accepted norms and traditions. This forum is dedicated to challenging contemporary and historical perceptions and values, identifying outlying ideas and trends, and investigating tensions between the old and the new. How do emerging trends, innovations, and new social outlooks affect our thinking and our society? How do revolutions and uprisings help us understand our particular milieus and our global world? What are the interrelationships between political, economic, scientific, and social change?
