Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (University of Wisconsin)

Greetings from UW-Madison’s Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI)! We are excited to announce that applications for CESSI 2024 are now open! CESSI typically offers courses in Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Additional Central Eurasian languages (such as Azerbaijani or Kyrgyz) may be added with sufficient student interest.

Several funding opportunities exist for students of any type. Graduate students (including incoming students), post-baccalaureate researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens are especially encouraged to apply for the Title VIII Fellowship*, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,500 for the summer. Note: This is a great opportunity for incoming MA and PhD students to develop language skills before embarking on fieldwork. *TVIII funding is provided by the United States government. Funding is conditional on final approval from U.S. State Department.

Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia 2024

The Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies (MIRS) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey invites applications for the Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia 2024.

The Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia 2024 will be held in Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey, from July 2 to July 20, 2024. These countries are experiencing radical, and quite different geopolitical challenges, with one constant variable in place – their shared history with the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation. Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey stand at a crossroads of international affairs as a Petri dish of competition and conflict between Iran, the United States, China, and Russia.

The International and Foreign Language Education team is excited to announce the launch of the FY 2024 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad competition. The Seminars Abroad (SA) program provides short-term study abroad opportunities for groups of U.S. educators in the arts, social sciences, and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Successful applicants will have their in-country expenses provided for, including air transport, meals, and accommodation. This summer we will be hosting a seminar to Finland for K-8 educators, one to Thailand for 9-12 educators, and a seminar to Colombia for postsecondary educators and administrators. The application deadline is January 4, 2024.

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event since 2002 designed to provide undergraduate students, from the University of Pittsburgh and other colleges and universities, with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills. The event is open to undergraduates from all majors and institutions who have written a research paper from a social science, humanities, or business perspective focusing on the study of Eastern, Western, or Central Europe, the European Union, Russia, or Central Eurasia.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, is one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges with approximately 4,400 students. Located in the scenic Hudson River Valley, some 50 miles from New York City, West Point is a singular institution with a storied history. It is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. Established in 1802, its mission is to educate, train, and inspire cohorts of leaders for service in the U.S. Army. The institution is committed to values of inclusion, diversity, innovation, creativity, leader development, and other Army values of duty, selfless service, honor, and integrity.

The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Department of History at the United States Military seek TWO Postdoctoral Fellows and ONE Research Assistant Professor who share these values and wish to join our outstanding faculty.  These positions are open to junior scholars who received their doctorates after 31 December 2017. Each appointment is for thirteen months, may be renewable for up to two additional years, and includes full benefits. Appointments will begin on or after 24 June 2024 and will hold the academic rank of Assistant Professor. Successful candidates will be part of the Resnick Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Department of History. Each will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level and for production of a significant scholarly project. To be considered for more than one position, you must submit separate applications. The application deadline is 8 December 2023.

Summer Institute at University of Iowa on Translation Across the Curriculum

The 2024 Summer Institute on Translation Across the Curriculum will be held by the Center for Translation and Global Literacy at the University of Iowa (CTGL) and American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association (ATISA) at the University of Iowa, Iowa City on June 5-9, 2024.

The 2024 CTGL-ATISA summer institute, called The Undergraduate Curriculum: Programs, Courses, Activities, invites those constituencies in higher education that are in a position to promote translation as a global literacy skill and that want to incorporate translation into their teaching (e.g., instructors of world languages and literatures, comparative literature, creative writing, and general education) to participate. New Research Fellowships (Center for Jewish History)

The Center for Jewish History is proud to announce the creation of an expanded fellowship program. The program features four new endowed 10-month fellowships in addition to one existing 12-month fellowship and two short-term fellowships. The seven fellowships constitute the nucleus of a projected Institute for Advanced Jewish Historical Research.

The fellowships will support original research using the collections of the Center’s five partners: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute. Preference will be given to those candidates who draw on the archival and library resources of more than one partner institution. The fellowships are open to a range of senior scholars, early career scholars, and advanced graduate students who have completed all the requirements (i.e., coursework, exams, dissertation proposal) for the doctoral degree apart from the dissertation.
