The IRS program provides grants to institutions, public and private agencies, organizations, and individuals to conduct research and studies or to develop instructional materials to improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies, and other international fields. /MATERIALS 4.0: The digitally enabled atom to system revolution/ which
will take place at TU Dresden this year (September 11- 15, 2017).

Innovative materials are a key element for keeping products and industrial processes economically competitive and ecologically sustainable. Modern materials science requires a multi-discipline approach embracing chemistry, physics, engineering, as well as theoretical and numerical modeling. The summer school/MATERIALS 4.0/ will provide an overview of current developments in the ongoing digitalization revolution in materials science and will offer a platform for discussions about future perspectives. Dresden is a cultural capital and a world-leading center for materials research. During the one-week school, 12 renowned researchers will lecture and tutor the small group of students.

The registration is open until July 4th. For excellent PhD students and Postdocs, up to 20 all-inclusive grants (travel support, accommodation, participation) will be available.

Call for Applications: A Research Introduction to Jewish Life and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union

The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum invites applications for the international seminar “A Research Introduction to Jewish Life and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union.” This seminar will be held January 8-12, 2018, at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

This seminar will acquaint undergraduate, MA, and early PhD students with the central topics, issues, and sources related to the study of Jewish life and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, including prewar life, evacuation, mass shootings, rescue, forced labor, and issues of commemoration and memory, with a prominent geographical focus on Ukraine. Mandel Center scholars will lead discussions, and the seminar will include group analysis of many of the types of primary source material available in the Museum’s collections. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to explore the Museum’s extensive library, archival, and other collections.

The Museum welcomes international applications from undergraduates, MA, or early PhD students who are enrolled in relevant academic disciplines at colleges and universities. Applications must include: (1) a confidential recommendation letter from a faculty member that addresses the applicant’s potential and relevant interests, background, training, and qualifications (including previous coursework, projects, publications, or language study); (2) the online application form; (3) a letter of interest from the applicant discussing his/her interest in Jewish life and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union; and (4) a current curriculum vitae that lists relevant coursework, research papers, and academic presentations. Recommendation letters may be in English, Russian, or Ukrainian; all other application materials must be in English.

The Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum (SURF) is now accepting applications for its 2017-18 program and would like to extend an invitation to your students to apply.
SURF is a platform for Russian and American university students to work together on some of the most important issues our nations face today. Participants travel to Russia for a five-day conference in the fall, conduct collaborative research with their working group peers over the academic year, and ultimately present their work at a capstone conference at Stanford University in the spring. The working group format fosters consensus-building and leverages a cooperation-based approach to produce innovative solutions. Research themes include topics in international relations, the sciences, business and entrepreneurship, regional and humanitarian issues, and others.
SURF welcomes applications from graduate, professional, and undergraduate students in all academic disciplines and majors, regardless of prior exposure to Russia or the United States. Our program covers most expenses, including housing and local transportation. Participants are responsible for covering flight and visa costs. There is no registration or participation fee for our program.

Session 2 (July 14-16)—Russian Proficiency Testing

The Duke Slavic and Eurasian Language Resource Center will host a summer institute from July 12-16 for instructors (K-12 and university faculty) and language program coordinators in Slavic and Eurasian languages.

The summer institute will be held in two sessions offered back-to-back. Participants may attend one or both sessions. Both sessions will be held on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Session 1 (July 12-14): The first session will include presentations by speakers from Duke University, Indiana University, the University of Arizona, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and other leading institutions on topics including:

•       Teaching language and culture through film
•       Specialized language instruction at the advanced and superior levels
•       The use of technology in the language classroom
•       Integrating heritage students in the language classroom
•       Addressing the needs of differently-abled students
•       Using computer technologies to create pedagogical materials
•       The role of grammar in proficiency-based instruction
•       Popular culture and language instruction
•       Web resources for Slavic and East European language teachers

Session 2 (July 14-16): The second session will consist of a workshop on Russian language proficiency testing conducted by a leading Russian language proficiency test developer who is a TRKI [тестирование русского как иностранного] examiner. TRKI is the Russian Federation language proficiency testing system for five areas of linguistic competence (aural comprehension, reading, writing, speaking, and grammar/lexicon) developed and administered by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, and is the Russian component of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) developed by the Council of Europe.
