We are seeking a highly motivated, inspirational historian of Soviet Russia and/or the Soviet Union to take up a joint post in the History Faculty and the interdisciplinary Russian and East European Studies programme (REES), which forms part of the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA). Russian History is a lively area in our large History Faculty, with three other postholders working in the modern period; connections between European and global history are strong, and the Faculty covers a very broad thematic range. In OSGA, the postholder will work alongside a team of six permanent REES staff who research Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives. The post is also attached to St Antony’s College, which specialises in Area Studies and has a long association with Soviet Studies.  The successful applicant will join its Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre.

CFA: Marc Raeff Book Prize

The Eighteenth-Century Russian Studies Association, an affiliate organization of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), is now accepting submissions for the 2022 annual Marc Raeff Book Prize. We encourage both presses and individual scholars to submit nominations to the members of the prize committee (listed below).

The Raeff Book Prize is awarded for a publication that is of exceptional merit and lasting significance for understanding Imperial Russia during the long 18th century.  The recipient of the award will be recognized with a cash prize, which will be presented in November 2022 during the ASEEES annual convention in Chicago. The award is sponsored by the ECRSA and named in honor of Marc Raeff (1923-2008), historian, teacher, and dix-huitièmiste par excellence.

CFP: Nabakov Panel at MLA 2023

Nabokov and Curiosity  The International Vladimir Nabokov Society invites paper proposals for the 2023 MLA Convention (San Francisco, January 5-8) for a panel session on the topic “Nabokov and Curiosity.” Proposals should examine some aspect of curiosity as a theme in Nabokov’s works or as an approach to reading them. Possible topics include: interest, attention to detail(s), and inquiry; puzzle solving; novelty, freshness, and wonder; exploring the hidden or unknown; scientific, metaphysical, or sexual curiosity; curiosity as care, compassion, tenderness (including readings of Nabokov via the feminist-originated “ethics of care”); incuriosity as moral blindness in Nabokov’s villains; etc.  Please submit 250-word abstracts by March 19 to linkc@newpaltz.edu.  
“Toilers of the world, disband!”: Work, Freedom, and the Creative Act in Nabokov  The International Vladimir Nabokov Society invites paper proposals for the 2023 MLA Convention (San Francisco, January 5-8) for a panel session on the topic of “Work, Freedom, and the Creative Act in Nabokov.” Proposals might examine one or more of the following topics: Nabokov on work, especially creative labor and its prerequisites (memory, imagination, freedom, play, etc.); jobs/joblessness in Nabokov’s fictions; Nabokov in or on academia (academic labor, themes, characters); working conditions of émigré life; issues of class, wealth, and poverty; responses/opposition to Marxism, collectivism, totalitarianism; self-reflexive or metafictional commentary on writing, literature, style, or process; the importance of freedom, play, leisure, or personal vision for homo poeticus and the act of creation. Please submit 250-word abstracts by March 19 to linkc@newpaltz.edu.

Lang. Training: Russian Summer Language Intensive in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Bard College)

Resources: AATSEEL Graduate Student Committee

On behalf of the AATSEEL Graduate Student Committee, I am writing to encourage graduate students in Slavic and Eastern European Studies to join our organization. This is a wonderful opportunity for graduate students to collaborate with other colleagues and gain service experience valuable for professional development. The main goal of the committee is to help graduate students improve their experience at the conference.  

Every year at the AATSEEL Conference, the graduate student committee meets and gathers opinions from graduate students in Slavic Studies, then communicates them to the Executive Council. We also organize special events and panels at the conference, which will help you to meet other graduate students and build relationships with professionals in the field.

We welcome diverse students from all countries and universities! If interested (and we hope you are!), you can sign up by emailing me at ashkireva@umass.edu. Acad. Job: Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian (Wake Forest University)

 WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY’s Department of German and Russian invites applications for a one-year non-renewable position in Russian/Russian Studies at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian, beginning in July 2022. The area of specialization is open. The teaching load is 3 courses per semester, and may include courses in language, literature, linguistics, and/or culture. We welcome candidates with expertise in linguistics, ethnic studies, women and gender studies, and other related fields. A Ph.D. in hand is preferred by the start of the appointment, but advanced ABD candidates will also be considered. Native or near-native fluency in Russian is required.

CFA: PhD Placement Opportunities at British Library

Applications are open for two PhD placements working with the Slavonic and East European collections at the British Library. Successful applicants will receive a hands-on introduction to the activities of a major cultural organisation and help to improve access to the collections.  

The first project, ‘Displaced Persons (DP) Camp Publications in the British Library’, will involve enhancing metadata for the Library’s Ukrainian DP camp publications and researching and promoting this collection.

Hello from UW-Madison’s Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute!  

While the priority application deadline has passed, we are still accepting applications for CESSI 2022 on a rolling basis until April 1st, 2022. This is the final chance to get your application in! 

For those applying after the February 1st priority deadline, there will still be opportunities for funding such as the WISLI Tuition Scholarship and CESSI Tuition Remission. 

CESSI will take place in Madison, Wisconsin in 2022, offering courses in Kazakh, Uyghur, Tajik, and Uzbek.
