In his most famous article, Boris Eikhenbaum showed how Gogol’s Overcoat was made: a literary text was presented as a product of meticulous fabrication. In his later work, Eikhenbaum similarly explored the constructed nature of the environment (byt) in which literature is produced. Focusing on social and artistic milieus, Eikhenbaum asked: How are poets and literary figures “made?” In responding to this question, we seek to refine, recast, and expand the Formalist mode of inquiry.

Acad. Job: Russian Language Program Coordinator (UC Berkeley)

The UC Berkeley Slavic Department seeks to appoint a Lecturer who will serve as Russian Language Coordinator for the 2022-23 academic year, with the possibility of renewal and of subsequent continuing status. The position is anticipated to be full-time with a start date of July 1, 2022.

Applicants should have experience teaching Russian language at the college level to speakers of English, knowledge of language pedagogy, and administrative skills. A successful applicant will administer the Russian language program, including the placement of undergraduate students and the training and supervision of graduate student instructors; teach language pedagogy for graduate students; and be prepared to teach Russian at all levels. Minimum qualifications for the position include a near-native proficiency in Russian and English; a Master’s degree (or equivalent international degree), preferably in Russian language or other relevant field; and a legal permit to work in the United States by the appointment start date.
