The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington (Seattle) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Slavic and global literary studies, to begin September 16, 2022. This is a full-time, 9-month position.

University of Washington faculty engage in research, teaching, and service. The teaching load comprises five courses a year over three academic quarters, and tenure-track faculty have an annual service period of 9 months (September 16 – June 15).

Although the language rights of officially recognized minorities are protected by Chinese law, these languages and their speakers have been increasingly targeted by government repression in recent years. Since 2016, plans to phase out local languages have been combined with a larger campaign of mass imprisonment, forced assimilation, eugenics, and cultural destruction against the Uyghurs and other Turkic groups indigenous to the modern-day Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The Slavonic Studies Section in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (University Lecturer) in Russian culture from September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will hold, or be about to complete, a PhD in Slavonic Studies in a relevant area, and will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding research in the broad area of recent and contemporary Russian culture (with ‘recent and contemporary’ understood to mean culture since approximately 1985, and ‘culture’ including but not limited to all forms of literary, cinematic, artistic, dramatic, and digital production).

Russian Studies at McGill invites applications from talented and qualified students. As part of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, we offer a uniquely multi-cultural and interdisciplinary environment. Our students and faculty are committed to open, culturally informed dialogue among national and across intellectual traditions.

Our faculty specializes in 19^th-21^st century Russian literature and culture, working in such areas as Russian Romanticism and Realism, the Russian novel, Dostoevsky and Chekhov, as well as Soviet and Post-Soviet film and media. We offer seminars in drama, film, folklore, genre theory, the avant-garde, high Stalinist culture and post-Soviet culture. Our students are invited to explore visual culture, cultural mythology, symbolic geography, and intermediality. Beyond Russian Studies, the Department hosts a broad and flexible range of graduate seminars, including literary theory, world cinemas, digital humanities, media studies and environmental and animal studies. A small but dynamic program allows for a great deal of personal attention, an atmosphere of collegiality and a close-knit intellectual community.

“Under-Mapped Spaces: New Methods and Tools for Critical Storytelling with Maps” Workshop for Emerging Scholars

We are pleased to announce “Under-Mapped Spaces: New Methods and Tools for Critical Storytelling with Maps,” an intensive, student-designed workshop for emerging scholars. The workshop will be held from February 28-March 4, 2022 at Stanford University, and is co-hosted by the David Rumsey Map Center and Stanford Geospatial Center, and Branner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections.

Cartography continues to reproduce and amplify global inequalities in the production of knowledge. Drawing on Stanford’s rich map collections, this initiative aims to apply cutting-edge digital tools to the creation of compelling, accessible, and ethical narratives about “under-mapped” spaces.
