The Bassi Foundation is pleased to provide a small number of postdoctoral grants, the sizes of which vary by year. Prospective applicants are asked to submit a 2-page statement of research, a writing sample not exceeding 10,000 words, and a copy of their CV to scholarships@editing.press. Applications are assessed as part of a double-blind peer review process.

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year: December, April, and August. The value of the scholarships are remitted through editorial assistance as follows:
Master’s candidates: $750
Doctoral candidates: $2,500
Junior academics: $500
These figures reflect the upper bracket of costs of editorial assistance for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles, respectively. All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of full-time employment. There are no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.
Continue reading “Funding: Bassi Scholarship for Publishing Grad Students”The Slavic Studies Department at Brown University invites applications for a lecturer in the Polish language to teach in the academic year of 2021/22 with the possibility of renewal; the duty time will depend on enrollment. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of Polish, organizing and participating in extracurricular activities for the Polish-language students. The teaching load is five courses per two semesters (3/2).
Qualifications: native or near-native proficiency in Polish and English; Ph.D. or MA degree or equivalent in Slavic Studies, preferably in Polish Linguistics/Philology; evidence of successful teaching Polish at the university level in the US. Desirable qualifications include a proven ability to teach an additional Slavic language or any other language spoken in East-Central Europe and a course dedicated to Polish culture.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, the names, and contact information for three references to our Academic Department Manager, Justine Brown at justine_brown@brown.edu. We will conduct all interviews over zoom. Review of applications will begin on February 24 and will continue until the position is filled.
The Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures at Harvard University seeks applications for a position as Preceptor in Polish Language. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2021 with teaching beginning in Fall Semester 2021. The preceptor will be responsible for courses in beginning and intermediate Polish (4 courses per academic year) and additional language tutorials in advanced Polish as needed. The preceptor will work with the Director of the Slavic Language Program to develop courses and materials in Polish language and assist with recruitment of students and expanding interest in the Polish language program. An interest in furthering broader Slavic Language Program goals is highly desirable, including materials development for Polish. There may also be opportunities to develop and lead a Harvard summer study abroad program in Poland. Preceptorships at Harvard are initially for one year, with multi-year contracts possible in subsequent years for up to eight total years, contingent upon performance, enrollments, curricular need, and divisional dean approval. Interviews will be conducted by phone or video conference in spring 2021.

Job: Polish Language Preceptor (Harvard)”Arizona State University is seeking a faculty associate to teach elementary intensive Russian in its 2021 summer Critical Languages Institute. The program will be held online this summer. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching online, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidate will teach Russian 4 hours a day, five days a week, via Zoom for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming. The successful candidate will be joining a team of three elementary and one intermediate Russian instructors.

The TVL Practicum is a cross-campus elective course that teaches graduate students how to work and consult with startups. Multi-disciplinary teams of grad students work through a project-driven curriculum that immerses them in research, teaches about business strategy and terminology, and provides a framework for strategically thinking through business problems to directly deliver positive outcomes for Texas-based startups. These startup companies are from our TVL Accelerator and engage with the students as “consulting clients”, so this is real-world, hands-on experience for course credit!

This special issue of AvtobiografiЯ investigates the poetics of queer life-writing in Russian. What does a queer text in Russian look like? How do queer writers make use of, appropriate, or transform existing forms and genres? How does the queer Russian text evolve over time? How has the queer Russian text developed alongside, and responded to, queer texts that have come into Russia from other cultures? How has the evolution of literary forms and genres in Russian culture, as well as the evolution of information technologies, shaped the poetics of queer life-writing? Note that we have nearly reached our full complement of contributors, but we are seeking one or two further articles, particularly on bisexual and lesbian life-writing.

Virtual Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia
June 14 – August 8, 2021
The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) and the Slavic Reference Service (SRS) at the University of Illinois are excited to announce a Call for Applications for the 48th annual Summer Research Laboratory (SRL) program. Traditionally, the SRL is an in-person event, with scholars receiving support to travel to Champaign-Urbana. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, this year’s SRL will be held as a Virtual SRL (VSRL), with REEEC and SRS working to support scholars through remote research assistance, virtual programming, professional development opportunities, and collections and database access.
