Grad Program: Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (Indiana University)

The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at Indiana University invites applications to its MA and PhD programs. With fifteen faculty in the core unit, the Indiana Slavic department is one of the largest in the country. We support PhD level work in Russian, Polish, and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), as well as in Slavic linguistics and language pedagogy.

Home to a Russian Flagship Program, we have seen recent growth in Russian enrollments and maintain programs in BCS, Czech, Polish, and Ukrainian. Our core faculty offers mentorship in diverse areas including the theory and practice of translation, memory studies, economic criticism, cultural studies, and critical theory; research strengths in linguistics include pragmatics, phonology, second language acquisition, and pedagogy. Our extensive and engaged network of adjunct faculty adds expertise in fields such as documentary film, computational linguistics, and religious thought. Graduate students also have the opportunity for apprenticeships at our in-house press, Slavica, which puts out academic books in Slavic studies and, under the imprint Three String Books, literary translations.

CFP: The First Wave of Russian Emigration

The Research Centre for Russian Studies and Methodology invites you to participate in a series of symposia on The First Wave of Russian Emigration, the opening event of which will take place on November 13, 2020, online.

The aim of the opening symposium “The First Wave of Russian Emigration: Focal Points of Research” will be to explore the range of research topics regarding the first wave of Russian emigration with an interdisciplinary approach.

Experts studying the first wave of Russian emigration face a multifaceted set of phenomena, which can be approached from various angles. Besides researching the lives of individual émigrés and personal decision-making strategies, it is possible to group émigrés by geographic, professional, and ideological factors. The examination of these groups, as well as emigree institutions, scientific schools and press may help exploring the dynamics and collective identity of émigré communities.

Grad Program: Russian and Slavic Studies (University of Arizona)

Deadline: March 1, 2021

The University of Arizona’s Department of Russian and Slavic Studies invites applications to our MA degree program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of March 1, 2021 to be considered for financial aid. Early applications are encouraged.

The Masters of Arts in Russian and Slavic Studies offers a diversified program of study with courses in language, literature, linguistics, and culture. The MA Program has two tracks that offer students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to gain expertise in their specific fields of interest. Students in the Language, Literature, and Linguistics (LLL) track complete a rigorous program of study that culminates in MA Exams; graduates on the Russian and East European Studies (REES) track develop a specific area of focus and complete a MA thesis.

Resource: The Russian Hour with Marina Alexandrova

“The Russian Hour” is a weekly free event for learners of Russian as a foreign language at the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at UT-Austin. Hosted by Dr. Marina Alexandrova and the Texas Slavic Club, “The Russian Hour” in designed to help improve students’ listening and speaking skills while discussing various relevant topics, including politics, culture, history, health, art, education, and business with native speakers of Russian. Jobs: Second Language Acquisition Specialist & Language SME/Materials Developer

The National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland is searching to fill positions for subject matter experts in Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, and a long list of other languages. The National Foreign Language Center is also looking for experts in test item development and second language acquisition. You can find the job listing for this position at Indeed.com under the title “Second Language Acquisition Specialist SLA.”

As a research institute of the University of Maryland, the National Foreign Language Center works to define the current and future language needs of the nation and helps build capacity to meet those needs.

Both positions are full-time, contract jobs and are fully remote. Contract renewal is dependent on future funding and satisfactory performance. Interviews will be conducted remotely.

Resource: The Bridge: Connecting Past and Present Through Archival Research on Russia (Middlebury Institute of International Relations)

Despite all the indications to the contrary, many of the most important Russian archives are open and worth investigating. 

The goal of The Bridge is to illuminate archival sources and disseminate information about collections that are available (in-person and online) for use by students and young experts in the field. Research based on original source material is of paramount importance to moving the field of Russian Studies forward. Some highlights of this project include how to access critical archives such as RGANI, GARF, and the Foreign Ministry archives; tips on how to access archival material in regional archives that may be off-limits in Moscow; and how to access a variety of archival material online from the comfort of your own home or office.

ASEEES Virtual Convention

Join us for the Virtual Convention in November. With over 500 panels and roundtables, a film series, and networking activities, the virtual convention is a great opportunity, especially for those who have not been able to attend the in-person conventions in the past, to learn about latest scholarship and meet colleagues in the field. Registrants will also have a access to session recordings after the convention. The virtual convention website will become available in late October.

Register by October 7
Regular registration ends on  October 7, after which the registration fees will be higher. You must be registered in order to access the virtual platform, which will become available in late October. We also ask that you consider donating ASEEES so that we can offer more waivers to support graduate students and scholars in need to participate in the convention.
