Resource: GRINT Centre App for Learning Russian

SemesterRus is a free app designed by the GRINT Centre for learning Russian and preparing for the TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) at the Elementary, Basic, and First Certification levels. It includes 60 lessons (3 levels, with 20 lessons in each level, using a standard structure and design) and preparatory Russian language exams for each TORFL level using the in-app Dictionary and flashcards. The app is free to use for every learner from beginning to advanced, and does not include ads or in-app purchases.

Assessments for the Grammar, Reading, and Listening sections are carried out automatically within the app. Instructors from the GRINT Centre will individually grade the Writing and Speaking sections. Any final evaluation scores from the Exams section of the app will be available within 48 hours after completing the test.

Grad. Program/ Language Training: Ukrainian Summer Institute (Harvard University)

The 2020 Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute offers unique courses in Ukrainian studies taught by Harvard and visiting faculty. These courses are intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates who are concentrating in Ukrainian studies or who wish to broaden their educational experience. Students intending to participate in the HUSI program are asked to submit a HUSI enrollment form. Students must also complete the Harvard Summer School registration process and enroll in the classes they intend to take as part of HUSI.

Tuition for HUSI is commensurate with tuition rates charged for all other Harvard Summer School courses. Tuition for 2020 and the cost of on-campus room and board are posted on the Harvard Summer School website.

Applicants may register for 8 or 4 credits to participate in the program. Applicants seeking the I-20 certificate for the student F-1 US visa must register for 8 credits.

The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Russian culture, beginning August 2020. While area of specialization is open, we are seeking a dynamic scholar of Russian culture who can contribute to department research and teaching strengths in any of the following areas: film (Russian and East European), popular culture, gender, literature, migration studies, and translation. Qualified applicants must hold a PhD in Russian/Slavic languages and cultures or related discipline prior to the appointment start date. Fluency in Russian and English is required. North American classroom teaching experience and proficiency in another Slavic language is desired. The successful candidate will teach four courses per year, both in English and in Russian, will work to establish a study abroad program in a Slavic or East European country, and will contribute to the life of the department. This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility for renewal up to three years, pending need and availability of funds.

Call for Submissions: Studi Slavistici Journal

The journal “Studi Slavistici” is pleased to invite proposals for a special issue to be published in vol. XVIII, 2021, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Ukrainian poetess, playwright, translator Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913).

The writer has proved herself a bright modernist, whose influence on the development of Ukrainian literature cannot be overestimated. In her writings, problems of democratization of society, national liberation and emancipation were raised. The writer’s style is characterized by intellectualism, intermediality and a wide range of European literary tendencies.

Methodologies of approach to single works and various genres practiced by Lesya Ukrainka may be different, allowing fresh interpretations and deeper knowledge of the writer, her intellectual world, international literary connections, philosophical and artistic views. Her iconic image, overloaded with social and national mythologization may result in a more equilibrated evaluation in our days.

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Bucknell University invites applications for a renewable, full-time, non-tenure-track lectureship position in Russian language to begin August 1, 2020, with a two-year initial appointment. The successful candidate will teach Russian language at all levels, with a concentration on the Elementary and Intermediate sequence. The teaching load is 3/3, which is expected to include a first-year, writing-intensive seminar, and a general course on Russian culture in the candidate’s area of specialization, both taught in English. Possibility for on-going renewal will be contingent on demonstrated teaching effectiveness and the continuing needs of the Russian Studies Program. The successful candidate should possess native or near-native fluency in Russian and exhibit a demonstrated interest in Russian language teaching methodology. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or be ABD in the area of Russian language and literature. Evidence of successful college-level teaching experience is required.

The Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for a full-time lecturer position in Russian to begin August 1, 2020. These non-tenure-track positions are renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellent teaching and the department’s staffing needs. The University of Tennessee has a well-established promotion system for non-tenure line faculty

The position comes with full benefits. The teaching load is 12 hours per semester. The lecturer is expected to be able to teach Russian language, literature and culture at all levels and be actively involved in the development of the Russian program. Late-Soviet to contemporary period is preferred.

Minimum qualifications: M.A. (Ph.D. preferred) in Russian literature, culture, or related fields; native or near-native fluency in Russian and English; at least two years of Russian teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the U.S.; demonstrated excellence in teaching.
