PhD position ‘The Muslim Individual in Imperial and Soviet Russia’
Faculty of Humanities – Amsterdam School for Regional and Transnational and European Studies

Research at the Faculty of Humanities is carried out by six research schools under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute of Humanistic Research. The Amsterdam School for Regional and Transnational and European Studies, one of the six research schools, currently has two vacant PhD positions as part of the ERC-funded project MIND: The Muslim Individual in Imperial and Soviet Russia, led by dr Alfrid Bustanov (University of Amsterdam). Prof. Dev: Student Essay Competition (ASEEES)

2019 Midwest Slavic Association Student Essay Prize Competition Submissions Now Being Accepted

The Midwest Slavic Association, with support from the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), is now accepting submissions for its annual essay prize competition for undergraduate and graduate students. Students can submit a paper on any topic related to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies to the Midwest Slavic Association for consideration. The best undergraduate paper received will win a one-year membership to ASEEES, and the graduate winner will receive a one-year membership to ASEEES, as well as being considered then for the ASEEES Graduate Student Essay Prize at the national level. The graduate winner of the ASEEES Student Essay Prize at the national level wins travel, lodging, and registration for the Annual ASEEES Convention and membership for the following year. The prize is presented during the awards presentation at the Annual Convention.

Submissions should be emailed to csees@osu.edu by Tuesday, April 30!

Prof. Dev: Stanford U.S.–Russia Forum 2019–20

The Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum (SURF) is now accepting applications for the 2019-20 program!

The Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum is a platform for students to address the most pressing issues and opportunities between the United States and Russia. They are seeking members for research working groups in the areas of nuclear affairs, entrepreneurship, space exploration, climate and environment, counterterrorism, healthcare, the Arctic, energy geopolitics, security, and more.

This November, participants will attend a week-long conference in Russia. Following the fall conference, participants form working groups and collaborate on research for publication over the academic year. The program concludes with a capstone conference in April 2020 where research findings are presented and ideas are shared with academics, policy-makers, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and other interested parties. Prof. Dev: Foreign Language Teaching Podcast

A new episode of Foreign Language Teaching Podcast is out!

This time Natalie McCauley interviews Richard Robin, professor of Russian at George Washington university and the author of textbook Golosa.
They discuss a number of topics related to language teaching, learning and testing, such as:

  • strategies to cultivate learner autonomy,
  • when plagiarism and cheating can be good for language learning,
  • five-minute declension quizzes and the reasons Professor Robin believes in learner-centered homework, not learner- centered classroom;
  • using ACTFL guidelines and OPIs for teaching and testing;
  • effective test-taking strategies and what one needs to do to achieve Superior or Distinguished level of proficiency and many others.

Job: Ukrainian Lang. Translators, Copy Editors, Indexers

Deadline for Applications: Ongoing

The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University is building a database of experienced translators, copy editors, and indexers to assist with publications projects on an as-needed basis.

Apply online at https://huri.harvard.edu/news/news-from-huri/370 to join the list of potential freelancers. Applicants must submit their resume, a list of relevant experience, and one or two samples of their work at the time of application.

Roles:
• Ukrainian to English translators, preferably native English speakers
• Copy editors with intimate knowledge of Ukrainian studies
• Indexers who have prior experience preparing indices
