Funding: Grad/Postdoc Research Fellowships (AISEES)

AISEES announces the availability of 3 fellowships for US graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the United States to support research in the Southeast Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia). Awards will be made for a maximum of $3000 each. Projects in all fields in the social sciences, humanities and related sciences are eligible.

Grad Program: Rus-Eng Translation (UW Milwaukee)

Online and Onsite MA and Graduate Certificate Programs

UW Milwaukee’s programs are designed for traditional and non-traditional students, and may be completed entirely online or onsite. Students have a number of options for study in Arabic, French, German, Russian or Spanish to English translation, as well as interpreting.

The department offers a 30-credit Master of Arts with a concentration in Translation, within which students may choose the professional or research track. Also offered is a 21-credit graduate certificate in professional translation. Both the Graduate Certificate and the MA (professional or research track) can be earned in two academic years or within five years.

The interdisciplinary nature of Translation is reflected in the coordinated degree programs. It is possible to earn a dual Master degree in Library & Information Sciences and Master in Language, Literature and Translation (51 credits). The MALLT (Translation)/MLIS degree may be completed onsite or entirely online. A coordinated Master of Business Administration and Master in Language, Literature and Translation (61 credits) is also available; the MBA/MALLT-Translation degree may be completed onsite or partially online. These degrees can be earned in three academic years or within seven years.

Job: Teach English in Russia (American Home)

Get an ESL teaching position with the American Home’s American English Program in Vladimir, Russia! 

The American English Program has been helping Vladimir residents to learn English since 1992 and currently has more than 600 students each semester who are taught by 10 American and 4 Russian teachers.

PROGRAM BENEFITS: monthly stipend, room and board with a Russian family, three hours per week of one-to-one Russian lessons with experienced instructors, thorough teacher orientation and ongoing teaching support from 2 full-time teacher supervisors, textbooks customized specifically for the program, a pleasant and well-equipped teaching environment, full Russian visa application support, complete on-site administrative support from an excellent Russian staff, and much more.

TEACHER OBLIGATIONS: Plan and teach four (possibly 5) 1½ hour classes that meet twice a week, hold office hours, present a brief “Saturday lecture” on any aspect of American culture, airfare to and from Moscow, visa fee, obtain TESOL certification. 

Teachers gain an enormous amount of real-world experience that can translate into opportunities that would otherwise not be available.  Some teachers stay for more than one year.  For many, the experience is life-changing.

Prof. Devt: Summer Research Lab (University of Illinois)

For over forty years, the Summer Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has provided scholars from around the world with the opportunity to work in our Library’s famous collections in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding the Summer Research Laboratory again this year, from June 10 to August 2, 2019. The SRL is open to all scholars with research interests in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Graduate students, academics, independent scholars, librarians, and government employees are encouraged to apply.

About the Program

With hundreds of thousands of volumes in Russian, East European, and Eurasian languages, alongside extensive microfilm collections of rare and archival materials, the University Library at Illinois ranks among the best research collections in the world. The SRL provides scholars with the opportunity to work extensively with these resources, at any stage of their work. Many important books and articles have been written in our collections over the years. Graduate students find a trip to Illinois an excellent way to plan their research and begin work on their dissertations.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies is honored to award up to 10 Davis Fellowships for Peace this coming summer! These 10 recipients will receive a full tuition scholarship to Middlebury’s Summer Intensive Language Program at Monterey.

The deadline to submit a completed application is February 15, 2019 at 11:59 p.m., pacific time.

Interdisciplinary Art Grant: Spotlight on Bulgaria

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The Interdisciplinary Art Grant, solely funded by the American Foundation for Bulgaria, is designed by the Council for European Studies, the Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York, and the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation. This collaborative event is aligned with CES’ upcoming theme for the 26th International Conference of Europeanists, “Sovereignties in Contention: Nations, Regions and Citizens in Europe.” The grant is intended to support collaborative, interdisciplinary work produced by emerging and established artists in Bulgaria, as well as Bulgarians in other countries. New work and work in progress is eligible.

One prize in the amount of $3000 will be awarded in May 2019. A multi-disciplinary selection committee, assembled from the founding organizations mentioned above, will choose the winners. The winning entry will receive a check for $3000[1] for creating and producing the work, along with public recognition in a special edition of EuropeNow and announcement in the European Studies Newsletter, as well as various social media sites. In addition, each of the awardees will receive one year of complimentary individual membership with the Council for European Studies (CES).

Undergraduate Project Prize

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The European Studies Undergraduate Project Prize is designed to encourage interesting and collaborative, interdisciplinary work in the field of European Studies by rewarding talented undergraduates who have conducted original research in the field. The prize is awarded to the best research paper written in English on any subject in European Studies as part of an undergraduate university degree program. Projects that incorporate another discipline and a second contributor are strongly encouraged.

Two prizes will be awarded in 2019. A multidisciplinary selection committee appointed by CES’ Executive Committee will choose the winners. Each winner (or winning collaborative team) will receive a check for $500, along with public recognition in CES’ European Studies Newsletter, and on CES’ social media sites. As well, the winning project will be featured on EuropeNow Campus, the educational corner of EuropeNow, CES’ online journal of research, art, and politics relating to Europe that reaches over 100,000 readers globally. In addition, prize winners who are interested in attending the CES conference may request one conference registration fee waiver for any conference in the three years following their award.
