CFP: Econ History of Rus (Uni. Wisconsin-Madison)

CALL FOR PAPERS: SUMMER WORKSHOP ON THE ECONOMIC HISTORY AND HISTORICAL POLITICAL ECONOMY OF RUSSIA

The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites paper submissions to a workshop on the economic history and historical political economy of Russia from May 24-25, 2019. The purpose of the workshop is to highlight recent research, build interdisciplinary ties and dialogue, and strengthen the community of scholars exploring related issues across neighboring disciplines.

All proposals are welcome, regardless of discipline, addressing any topic related to the economic history and historical political economy of Russia. Young scholars, including those currently pursuing PhD degrees, are especially encouraged to apply.

The format of the workshop is designed to provide in-depth feedback to presenters and comprehensive discussion of selected topics. Each 50-minute session will be dedicated to a single paper, with a 5-minute presentation by the author followed by a 45-minute discussion. Participants are expected to read all conference papers in advance of the workshop. There is a strict limit of 20 pages (including tables and figures) for all workshop papers. Interested scholars are also encouraged to attend, even if not on the program. Travel grants and accommodation will be provided for selected graduate students, regardless of proposal status, and for all presenters.

Those interested in presenting should send an abstract and a 3–5 page paper summary by December 1 to events@creeca.wisc.edu. Applicants will be notified of proposal status by January 15, 2019. The deadline for final paper submission is May 1.

The Faculty are seeking to appoint an Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of Czech.

The Associate Professor will engage in advanced study and research in Czech language and literature, by offering high-quality tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision at both undergraduate and graduate level.

They will give, under the direction of the Faculty Board, no fewer than 36 lectures or classes a year and will undertake six hours of tutorial or equivalent teaching for colleges per week; this will be shared across colleges with students studying Czech options, although it is anticipated that teaching for University College will take priority. Internship: Winter English Camp (Cosmopolitan)- Two spots left!

Educational Center “Cosmopolitan” has only two vacant spots available for their winter internship program. These will take place at the children’s camp just outside Novosibirsk, the administrative capital of Siberia and the centre of Russia. The dates of the program are January 3rd through January 12th, 2019.

These positions are open to university students. No previous teaching experience, no previous knowledge of Russian is required. Interning at this camp, students will gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession while being immersed in the Russian culture and having intensive practice in the Russian language. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the coolest festive season in Siberia with lots of exciting events, and experience all the winter fun one could dream of in just ten days.

This program will be an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession. They will be immersed in Russian culture, receive intensive practice in Russian language, and interact with real Russian people. Students will receive room and board, visa support, transportation, and formal Russian lessons during their stay. Interested students should contact the Program Director for more information, including participation fees.

Students who wish to spend more time in Russia and are still looking for internship opportunities may be interested in the Russian language study internship. Free accommodation is provided in Novosibirsk throughout the academic year. The dates are flexible and interested students should contact the Center to discuss further details.

Study Abroad: Trans-Siberian Summer (UNH)

Unique Trans-Siberian Study Abroad Program, University of New Hampshire

What is the program?
The UNH Russia Program is a unique summer study abroad opportunity for all interested students to experience first-hand the vastness of Russia. Students travel with UNH faculty and study Russian language, culture, and history with stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a trip across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! Visits include cultural, historical, and political venues (including the Duma, Kremlin, Hermitage, WWII bunker, Gulag Museum, Tatar hat workshop, hiking around Lake Baikal, participate in traditional Russian folk wedding, Lenin’s house in Gorki, banya, Russo-Japanese war fortresses and bunkers in Vladivostok) with readings and discussion at each site.

4 Week and 8 Week Programs

4 Week program: Earn 8 UNH credits studying culture and history while traveling to St. Petersburg, Moscow and on to Siberia, with stops in Kazan, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Arshan (a village in Buryatiya) and ending in Vladivostok. No prior study of Russian language is required. Survival Russian included in pre-departure and in-country work. All students with an interest in Russian history, politics and culture should apply. Tentative program dates: May 23-June 25.

8 Week program: After the above 4 weeks of travel, students stay in Moscow and have language classes taught by faculty from Language Link. Earn an addition 8 credits studying Russian language (grammar, conversation and phonetics at the appropriate level with 4 additional hours a week of conversational work.) These credits are issued by Language Link. Tentative program dates: May 23-July 23.

Pre-departure orientation sessions (via Skype) and pre-departure assignments (reading, lectures and work done on-line with a UNH faculty member.)

Study Abroad: 2019 Internship (Crossroads Eurasia)

Crossroads Eurasia is now accepting applications for its 2019 internship program in Russia.

What is Crossroads Eurasia?
Founded in 2010, Crossroads Eurasia is about complementing your study of the Russian language with a practical hands-on experience.

Participants can teach English, work as a camp counselor, do translation, or experience Russia at street level via the new media / journalism program. Options can be combined.

Academic Job: Director RUS Lang. Program (Uni. Pittsburgh)

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for the position of Director of the Russian Language Program, pending budgetary approval. This appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer; the initial appointment is for one year, followed by a three-year renewable term.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Funding: Research Fellowships (CAORC)

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) offers two fellowship programs, the NEH Senior Research Fellowship and Multi-Country Research Fellowship, which allow fellows to visit and carry out research within their network of Overseas Research Centers.

The CAORC National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Research Fellowship Program supports advanced research in the humanities for U.S. postdoctoral scholars, and foreign national postdoctoral scholars who have been residents in the U.S. for three or more years.

Scholars must carry out research in a country which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Eligible countries for 2018-2019 are: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Cyprus, Georgia, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Senegal, Sri Lanka or Tunisia.

Fellowship stipends are $4,200 per month for four consecutive months. This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions (FPIRI).

The CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their PhD. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Approximately eight awards of up to $10,500 each will be given. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.​

Panel, roundtable and paper proposals relating to any aspect of East-Central European and Eurasian Studies are welcome. Practitioners and scholars in all fields with an interest in this region are encouraged to participate.

Submissions of pre-organized panels are strongly encouraged and will be given some priority in the selection process. Individual papers are also welcome and selected papers will be assigned by the Program Committee to an appropriate panel with a chair and a discussant.

The login for the submission site is the same as your ASEEES member site login, where “User Name” is your primary email address, and password is the same.

Funding: LTLR Grants (Pitt SLI)

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) Grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site at Pitt’s Summer Language Institute in June – July 2019. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see www.sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered. Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for either all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects.
