CFP: Annual Conference in NOLA (AATSEEL)

The AATSEEL Call for Papers is now available

In addition to regular conference panels and events, the program will now include panel streams. These streams will promote greater cohesion among conference panels and foster a broader dialogue throughout the conference. The result can be a series of mini-conferences within the framework of our larger conference. There will be two stream sessions (“A” and “B”). The panels in each session will meet simultaneously, so members may apply for no more than one “A” stream and one “B” stream. All conference attendees are welcome to attend stream panels, but participants in a stream are expected to attend all of the panels in their stream.

All AATSEEL members are eligible to submit paper proposals to any one of the streams listed above.
Proposals should be submitted through the regular submission website as an “Individual Paper” with the title of the stream selected in the drop-down menu on the proposal form.
Please do not send submissions directly to the stream organizers.
Please submit your proposals by April 15, 2018 (for early consideration) or July 1, 2018.

Postdoctoral position in Russian Studies
There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Foreign Languages, by plan starting August 1, 2018 or as agreed. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.
The Department of Foreign Languages spans nine different languages, and teaching and research are conducted in the disciplines language/linguistics, literature, cultural studies and didactics. The Department has around 50 permanent academic staff members, along with four post-docs, around twenty PhD candidates and eleven administrative members of staff. Graduate Program: Online MA ( Uni. Wisconsin, Milwaukee)

Deadline for Applications: Ongoing Until Filled

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be holding qualifying exams for admission to the MA program in Russian->English translation on April 26-29. The next round of qualifying exams will be in late July, in time for admitted students to enroll in Fall 2018. We have a rolling deadline for admissions, but there are only three qualifying exams each year.

This is a fully online set of degree programs: professional and research tracks, dual degrees in Translation + MBA and Translation + MLIS, certificates, and dual language pairs. All these programs can be completed online from anywhere in the world. TA-ships and RA-ships with tuition remission may be available for students interested in studying in residence at UWM. Students in the Russian->English track will be working with Dr. Anne O’Brien Fisher.

CFP: Bobby R. Inman Award (UT Austin)

The Intelligence Studies Project of The University of Texas at Austin announces the fourth annual competition recognizing outstanding student research and writing on topics related to intelligence and national security. The winner of the “Inman Award” will receive a cash prize of $5000, with two semifinalists each receiving a cash prize of $2500. This competition is open to unpublished work by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs at accredited U.S. higher education institutions during the 2017-18 academic year. The deadline for submitting papers is June 30, 2018.

The Intelligence Studies Project was established at The University of Texas at Austin in 2013 as a joint venture of the Clements Center for National Security and the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law with the LBJ School of Public Affairs. The Project’s mission is to improve understanding of intelligence activities and institutions through research, courses, and public events bringing intelligence practitioners together with scholars, students, and the public.

The Bobby R. Inman Award recognizes more than six decades of distinguished public service by Bobby R. Inman, Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Admiral Inman served in multiple leadership positions in the U.S. military, intelligence community, private industry, and at The University of Texas. His previous intelligence posts include Director of Naval Intelligence, Vice-Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Director of the National Security Agency, and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. He continues to serve as a teacher, advisor, and mentor to students, faculty members, and current government officials while occupying the Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Chair in National Policy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. His areas of teaching and research are focused on political, economic, and military activities, policy processes and institutions, international affairs and diplomacy, and intelligence and national security.

Funding: Dissertation Grants (ASEEES)

ASEEES Dissertation Research Grants 2018-2019

Thanks to the generosity of donors and members, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies is sponsoring up to ten grants annually, at a maximum of $5,000 each, for the purposes of conducting doctoral dissertation research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia in any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies in any discipline. These awards may be held concurrently with other partial funding sources, but are intended to support students whose projects have not yet been fully supported. The grant recipient cannot concurrently hold the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship, Fulbright-Hays DDRA, SSRC IDRF and other similarly fully-funded fellowships. The grant is for primary dissertation research, not for dissertation write-up.

ELIGIBILITY
• Applicant may be a graduate student of any nationality, in any discipline currently enrolled in a PhD program in the United States
• Applicant must have successfully achieved PhD candidacy (ABD status) by the start of the proposed research travel
• Applicant must have language proficiency to conduct the proposed research
• Applicant must be a student member of ASEEES at the time of application
• Applicant must plan to conduct research in one or more of countries within the region covered by ASEEES, including: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan
• Applicant must plan to start the research travel within the same calendar year following the receipt of the fellowship (Ex: Upon notification of the fellowship in the summer of 2018, the grant recipient must start his/her research travel no later than December 31, 2018)
• Applicant must not hold the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship, Fulbright-Hays DDRA, SSRC IDRF and other similarly fully-funded fellowships for the same research project

GRANT AMOUNT
The grant amount is maximum $5,000, which must be used toward expenses outside the US conducting research in the eligible country or countries, listed above. NOTE: The fellowship does not support tuition and fee payments to the applicant’s US home institution.

Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2018 (Notifications will be made by June 1, 2018)

TO APPLY
Complete the online application, which includes:
• a 1000-word/two-page, single-spaced description (not including footnotes) of the research scope, analytical framework, methodology, budget, and timeline;
• a CV no longer than two pages;
• Graduate transcript(s) (unofficial copy allowed);
• two letters of professional reference due May 6 (one must be from the main dissertation adviser);
• a section on the status of all grants to which one has applied for the research period and/or a statement of ineligibility for key funding opportunities. (Prior to disbursement of funds, ASEEES will contact the home department to verify candidate’s standing and funding levels.)
All files are reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel that values clarity of argument to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Funding: Tucker-Cohen Dissertation Prize (ASEEES)

Deadline for Nominations: May 15, 2018

The Robert C. Tucker/Stephen F. Cohen Dissertation Prize, established in 2006 and sponsored by the KAT Charitable Foundation, is awarded annually (if there is a distinguished submission) for an outstanding English-language doctoral dissertation in Soviet or Post-Soviet politics and history in the tradition practiced by Robert C. Tucker and Stephen F. Cohen. The dissertation must be defended at an American or Canadian university, and must be completed during the calendar year prior to the award. The prize carries a $5,000 award intended to help the author turn the dissertation into a publishable manuscript. The prize is awarded at the ASEEES Annual Convention. The X International Virtual Forum, IMAGES OF RUSSIAN STUDIES IN VIRTUAL INFORMATIONAL SPACE, will take place September 28-30, 2018 at Dangguk University, Cheonan, Republic of Korea. The aim of the forum is to unite the linguists, methodologists, cultural experts, literary experts, and teachers from different countries in order to identify and analyze cutting edge issues in the humanities, search for the ways to increase efficiency of the international cooperation, and cultural communication in person and virtually. Faculty and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Sections will address:

  • New horizons in Literature.
  • Innovations in Philology.
  • The increasing role of Bilingualism in Modern Society: Bilingual Education.
  • Translation and Cross-cultural Communication.

The forum will offer seven discussion panels via a connected communication infrastructure, which will facilitate discussion on innovative developments in theory and practice of education, cross-cultural and migration problems, bilingual education and translation, smart-technologies, problems in philology and literature. Each discussion panel will consist of co-chairs, forum participants, and teachers from leading universities, and the virtual participants.

The participants of the forum will be awarded certificates.

Funding: General Research Grants (Gerda Henkel Stiftung)

Deadline for Applications: June 13, 2018

Applications for research scholarships can be made directly by Postdocs or scholars with Post Doctoral Lecture Qualification. A research scholarship is usually applied for by one scholar who will work on a specific project on his own. An institutional affiliation is not necessary. The simultaneous receipt of salary or retirement pension and a research scholarship is not possible.

The funding period is generally between one and 24 months.

It is possible to apply for:

  • basic scholarship sum

if appropriate

  • supplement for travel abroad (monthly endowment for stays of for weeks or more)
  • family grant award (for children who have not yet turned 18; in case of a positive decision the presentation of the child’s birth certificate is necessary)
