CFP: Journal of Icon Studies (Museum of Russian Icons)

The Journal of Icon Studies is now accepting submissions for its second issue, scheduled for online publication in December 2018. They welcome contributions from scholars working across a wide disciplinary range, including art history, literature and film, religious studies, gender and cultural studies, history and anthropology, conservation and museum studies.

The Journal of Icon Studies is an online, peer-reviewed publication dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of icons around the globe, from the Byzantine period to the modern era. It serves as an international forum for new scholarship on the theoretical, theological and historical significance of icons, their place within a broad cultural and artistic context, as well as their conservation, collecting, and exhibiting. The journal includes reviews of books and exhibitions, archival discoveries, and translations of primary documents.

The journal is published annually by the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA. The language of publication is English, with summaries in Russian. Translation assistance will be provided by the museum.

FACULTY LECTURER POSITION IN RUSSIAN STUDIES

Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, McGill University

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) at McGill University invites applications for a Part-Time Faculty Lecturer position in Russian Studies. Ph.D. in Russian Studies or a related field preferred, but candidates with a M.A. degree will be considered. Extensive teaching experience and excellent teaching record at the university level are required. Duties include teaching Russian language on all levels. Expertise in current approaches to foreign language teaching, a critical and creative attitude to instructional technology, and an ability to meaningfully relate language acquisition to literature and culture are expected, as is a willingness to actively participate in program-related Departmental events and activities.

The teaching for the position is 12 credits per academic year, with the possibility of additional teaching in the summer session. The Initial appointment of Faculty Lecturer is 3 years; appointment is renewable and becomes indefinite after a period of 6 years of continuous employment. Start of appointment 1 August 2018. Salary will be negotiable, according to qualifications and experience.

The Wilson Center seeks a Program Assistant for the Kennan Institute. The incumbent will provide administrative support to the program.

Must have experience:

  • arranging travel and hotel accommodations

  • coordinating activities and planning upcoming events
  • drafting correspondence
  • proofreading correspondence and reports for correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling in English and/or Russian.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support to Director, Deputy Director, and staff of the Kennan Institute.
  • Prepares and edits various correspondences for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Arranges travel and hotel accommodations for staff members and participants in the Institute’s activities; completes appropriate travel authorizations, travel vouchers, purchase orders, petty cash, and other accounting-related paperwork.
  • Prepares and organizes Kennan Institute public events; responsible for set-up, microphones, and all other logistical matters.
  • Organizes multi-day conferences including travel logistics, catering, supplies, creating and formatting agendas and program materials, and coordinating staff and attendees.
  • Assists with scholar administration including organizing scholar competitions, onboarding procedure, management of internal scholar seminar schedule, visa support, and scholar list.
  • Assists with outreach, including communications by phone, e-mail, webpages, and social media.
  • Maintains and edits the Kennan Institute blogs.
  • Answers phones and office-wide email to provide information related to program activities.

Study Abroad: Politics & Public Diplomacy in Contemporary Russia (American Councils)

American Councils is now accepting applications for their Politics & Public Diplomacy in Contemporary Russia program!

Program Dates for Summer 2018:

June 20 – July 22, 2018

Are you interested in learning about the political situation in Russia today?  This five-week summer program is designed to give participants new insights into the historical and cultural trends that have shaped Russia in the late 20th and early 21st century. Through readings and intensive coursework in the form of lectures, seminars, and discussions conducted with faculty of Moscow International University, program participants gain a fuller understanding of the complex factors underlying politics and public diplomacy in Putin’s Russia.

The academic program features approximately twenty hours per week of in-class instruction.  As part of the academic program, participants receive six hours of instruction in Russian language each week. Participants are grouped according to language level for the Russian classes; no prior study of Russian is required.

The program includes weekly excursions and cultural activities, housing in university dormitories, two meals per day, a pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC, and visa and logistical support.

Study Abroad: Eurasian Regional Language Program (American Councils)

About the Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP)

The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of Eurasia. Participants may choose to study one of 16 regional languages:

Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Dari, Farsi, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Romanian, Tatar, Ukrainian, Uzbek, or Yakut

PROGRAM DATES, Summer 2018

June 6 – August 9, 2018

KEY FEATURES

  • Expert university faculty with a unique understanding of U.S. students and American academic culture;
  • Classrooms of only 1 to 5 participants to maximize individual attention to each learner’s needs;

FINANCIAL AID

Students admitted to American Councils programs are eligible to receive financial support from a wide range of sources, including the U.S. Department of State (Title VIII), Boren, Gilman, FLAS, and the American Councils Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.

Additionally, American Councils is pleased to offer special funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Fellowship of $4000 is available to overseas Persian language students in Dushanbe, Tajikistan during the Summer 2018 session. Academic Job: Russian Language Instructor (U. of Pittsburgh)

The University of Pittsburgh seeks two experienced Russian language instructors to lead our intensive 4th-year Russian courses this summer.

  • Summer Language Institute, June 1 – July 27, 2018.  Location = University of Pittsburgh
  • Pitt’s Project GO-Advanced Program, June 17 – August 10, 2018.  Location = Narva College, Narva, Estonia

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have experience designing upper-level Russian language curriculum and teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, have OPI certification (or training), and can articulate the methodologies they will employ to advance students’ proficiency levels across all modalities. In both programs, courses run from 9am – 3pm daily Monday – Friday for eight weeks; in addition to language classes, instructors will be expected to contribute to cultural programming.

Study Abroad: Summer Program in Russia (Arizona Global Soccer Program)

The University of Arizona (UA) and the GRINT Centre at the Moscow University for the Humanities (www.grint.ru) are pleased to announce a new summer study abroad opportunity through the Arizona Global Soccer Program.

The Arizona Global Soccer Program gives students the opportunity to attend classes (all conducted in English) in Moscow, Russia, from June 10 – July 5, 2018.  Students will earn 6 UA credits from a choice of 3 courses (“Global Soccer,” “Intercultural Competence,” and “Eastern European Science Fiction”), all taught by UA and GRINT faculty.  All inquiries about the 2018 program can be directed to Dr. Benjamin Jens (bcjens@email.arizona.edu).

While the Arizona Global Soccer Program will be held in Russia in 2018, the program will “travel” in future years in coordination with major soccer-related events.  The 2019 program will be in Paris, France, while the 2020 program will be in Munich, Germany.

They are pleased to announce that they will be holding the Summer Research Laboratory again this coming year, from June 11 to August 3, 2018. In addition, they are piloting a new program for scholars interested in visiting our campus during the academic year, from November 2017 to May 2018, called the Open Research Laboratory.

U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in business, innovation, and STEM fields are now eligible to apply for the Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarship for internships in Russia across two programs:

Scholarship Awards
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, program compatibility, and academic merit. Awards range from $3,000 to $5,000. Click here to learn about the Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarship.

Internship Program

Students are matched with internship hosts from a network of companies in business consulting, finance, advertising, marketing, social media, technology, e-commerce, fashion, education, and more. Participants will prepare internship goals before departure, earn credit, and complete a capstone project of their choice upon program completion.

Eligibility
U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in business or STEM fields are eligible to apply for American Councils Business, Technology, and Innovation Scholarships. Applicants must be admitted to either OPIT or BRLI to receive funding. No prior study of Russian is required to participate in OPIT.

Job: Resident Director for Summer Program (ACES)

American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES) is seeking a qualified Resident Director (RD) to work on site with a group of 15 US high school students for an approximately six-week (approximately from the end of June to mid August) program in Moscow, Russia through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. In Russia, students will engage in language learning in both formal (language courses) and informal settings (host family living). The RD is required to attend a two-day pre-program training in Bellevue, WA (late May to early June), attend a student orientation in Washington D.C., represent ACES for the duration of the program in Moscow, and submit a final report at the end of the program.
