Study Abroad: Trans-Siberian Program (U of New Hampshire)

What is the program?

The UNH Russia Program is a unique summer study abroad opportunity for all interested students to experience first-hand the vastness of Russia. Students travel with UNH faculty and study Russian language, culture, and history with stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a trip across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! Visits include cultural, historical, and political venues (including the Duma, Kremlin, Hermitage, WWII bunker, Gulag Museum, Tatar hat workshop, hiking around Lake Baikal, participate in traditional Russian folk wedding, Lenin’s house in Gorki, banya, Russo-Japanese war fortresses and bunkers in Vladivostok) with readings and discussion at each site.
 
4 Week and 8 Week Programs
 
4 Week program: Earn 8 UNH credits studying culture and history while traveling to St. Petersburg, Moscow and on to Siberia, with stops in Kazan, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Arshan (a village in Buryatiya) and ending in Vladivostok. No prior study of Russian language is required. Survival Russian included in pre-departure and in-country work. All students with an interest in Russian history, politics and culture should apply. Tentative program dates: May 23-June 25.
 
8 Week program: After the above 4 weeks of travel, students stay in Moscow and have language classes taught by faculty from Language Link. Earn an addition 8 credits studying Russian language (grammar, conversation and phonetics at the appropriate level with 4 additional hours a week of conversational work.) These credits are issued by Language Link.Tentative program dates: May 23-July 23.
 
Pre-departure orientation sessions (via Skype) and pre-departure assignments (reading, lectures and work done on-line with a UNH faculty member.) 
Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the full expanse of Russia!

The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University is now accepting applications for its 2018-2019 Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies.

The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University is currently accepting applications for its research fellowships for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applications from interested individuals must be submitted by January 15, 2018 through the online application form on HURI’s website.

HURI’s fellowship program supports distinguished scholars from around the world to carry out research in residence on topics pertaining to Ukrainian Studies. While at HURI, they can connect with experts, attend lectures and other events with world-renowned speakers, and make use of the resources at Harvard University, including its vast library collections.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the following fellowships are offered:

  • The Jaroslaw and Nadia Mihaychuk Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
  • The HURI/Ukrainian Studies Fund Research Fellowships (mid-career)
  • The Petro Jacyk Distinguished Fellowship (senior)

Fellows receive a monthly stipend to assist with the cost of housing, health insurance, and living expenses. The fellowships also provide direct roundtrip travel to Harvard University.

Eligibility: Individuals must have demonstrated a commitment to Ukrainian Studies and hold a doctorate in history, literature, philology, culture, or a related area of study in the humanities and social sciences fields.

Nominations for the Jacyk fellowship may also be submitted.

Internship: Overseas Professional & Intercultural Training Program (American Councils)

Overseas Professional and Intercultural Training Program (OPIT)

OPIT gives students the substantive overseas professional experience and intercultural skills demanded by today’s global market. English-language internships are available in a wide range of fields, including business, humanities, social sciences, innovation, and STEM disciplines throughout the Balkans, the Baltics, and Eurasia.

Program Description

Through OPIT’s six-week, English-language internships, students gain the substantive overseas professional experience and intercultural communication skills demanded by today’s global market. Participants can choose a placement in a variety of fields, including business, democracy building, human rights, education, science, technology, gender issues, journalism, public health, environmental protection, and social services in 17 countries in Southeast Europe, Eurasia, and the Baltics.

A full-time in-country American Councils staff person oversees the professional and intercultural program, assists participants in administrative and personal matters, and works closely with the host organization to ensure that participants are engaged in meaningful projects. The OPIT program draws on an extensive network of community partners, expert regional staff, and overseas resources developed by American Councils over the years.

Knowledge of a foreign-language is not required; however, the program does provide foreign language internships to interested and qualified students, and all students have the opportunity to combine their internships with intensive language study.

Funding: Olympiad Competition (HSE)

National Research University Higher School of Economics is honored to invite juniors, seniors and recent graduates to participate in our International Students’ Olympiad. The winners will receive priority admission with financial support to one of HSE’s two-year English-language master’s programs, which span a wide range of interests, from economics to computer sciences, linguistics, and international relations.  Scholarships are available.

The Olympiad – a written exam consisting of various problems and essay questions – will be held in your university location in Austin Texas in cooperation with CREEES.

By PhD conferral, students will have teaching experience in culture, cinema, language, and literature courses(team-taught and stand-alone formats).  PhD recipients have received academic job offers or post-doctoral fellowships in such institutions as Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Stanford Humanities Center, University College London, University of Texas Austin, Vanderbilt, and William and Mary.  Other PhD recipients have competed successful for senior academic administrative positions in International Studies, for work in Russian media analysis consulting in the public sector, and for teaching and administrative positions in private secondary education. The Higher School of Economics International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences in Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the history of World War II and Soviet society.

The job involves:

  • Working under the supervision of Oleg Budnitskii, the Center’s Director, and Michael David-Fox, the Academic advisor at the International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences
  • Participants are encouraged to pursue their own research that is thematically related to the Center’s research project on the history of World War II and wartime Stalinism, as well as on other topics dealing with Soviet history and culture more broadly
  • Writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals
  • Providing consultations on writing scholarly papers in English to Russian colleagues and students
  • Participation in organization of the events and other contribution to the Center’s development
  • Public presentations of candidate’s own research to the researchers in the field and the broader academic community
  • Some teaching is encouraged, though not required.

Academic Job: Academic Director and Instructor (Bishkek)

The American University of Central Asia (AUCA), in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, is currently seeking an Academic Director and Instructor in Russian/Slavic studies for the Spring and Summer of 2018.

The successful applicant should hold a Ph.D., or currently hold the status of A.B.D., in the field, have experience teaching Russian at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and preferably have experience with either administrative duties and/or Russian language course-design. Funding is currently pending, and will be provided by the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS). Upon successful completion of the position the applicant may be considered for future
employment at AUCA.

The CLS Russian Program at AUCA in the summer of 2018 is designed for 15-20 U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. The main aim of the program is to provide group-based intensive Russian language instruction and structured cultural enrichment and exchange

The American Home has proudly offered intensive Russian courses for foreigners for many years now. Our qualified and experienced instructors, Tanya Akimova and Nelli Mukhammadieva have many years of experience in teaching Russian to foreign students. Our students live with host families here in the ancient city of Vladimir, and can fully immerse themselves in both the Russian language and culture.
