Although Georgia is only about the size of West Virginia, the tiny country is home to several distinct cultures. Each of these cultures has contributed to Georgia’s legendary culinary traditions and many have developed their own variations of dishes now often collectively known as “Georgian.”

On this unique travel seminar, you will spend two weeks in an interdisciplinary exploration of Georgian national identity and history through its national cuisine. Using a variety of critical academic approaches, explore issues like climate change and state agricultural policies within the context of such issues as food security, the place of food in social justice and ethnic identity, and the role of Georgian foodways in the current global tourism economy.

Neither modern Cuba nor Russia can be appreciated without understanding the wars, revolutions, and political forces they have experienced over the past century. The Cuba-Russia Connection invites students, through selected topics in cultural diplomacy, to become better informed about these two fascinating countries. Cuba and Russia have played important strategic and often interrelated roles in US foreign policy. Moreover, their cultural production in the areas of music, literature, and art has extended beyond the two countries’ boundaries to make lasting contributions to the international canons of these forms of human expression. A deeper familiarity with both countries is essential to understanding U.S. interests in today’s complex geopolitical landscape.

Central Asian Studies is an innovative program preparing students for international careers. Based in the fascinating and historically significant region of Central Asia, this program combines intensive language or linguistics study with courses on regional history and cultures.

Summer students focus on how issues of identity and ethnicity currently affect Kyrgyzstan and its diverse demographics. Students chose from two tracks: – either broadly studying culture, clan structure, history, language, art, folk crafts, and cuisine – or focusing deeply on linguistic anthropology in Kyrgyzstan. Urban/rural divides are also discussed with a week-long horseback trek into the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to directly introduce students to modern nomads and their way of life.

Armenian Studies Summer School, from 29 Jul – 18 Aug, 2018 in Yerevan, Armenia.

This 21 day long summer school program offers participants the chance to master skills in written and oral modern Armenian, reading and interpreting Armenian texts from different historical periods, as well as rapidly deepening their knowledge in colloquial Armenian.

During the summer school, two cultural trips will be offered, which will transform students’ stay in Armenia into an unforgettable, academically oriented experience.
