The 11th Annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis “The EU Practices for Young Researchers: Studying Economics of Institutional Development” (RSSIA 2017) is organized by the Center for Institutional Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics (CInSt, HSE). We focus on recent developments in NIE and possibilities and challenges of applied research in the institutional economics framework. RSSIA 2017 is aimed at disseminating the best practices of institutional change and effective institutional reforms to assure their successful application at the less developed markets and the economies in or immediately after the transition. The schedule of the Summer School includes lectures, seminars and plenty of possibilities to discuss the participants’ research projects.

Priority in the selection will be given to research projects that are related to the following fields:
— Economics of public sector, bureaucracy, and procurement
— Economics of education

— Banks and financial markets
— Industrial organization, government regulation, and law enforcement
— Property rights, institutions and economic development
There is no registration fee. Organizers cover participants’ accommodation and meals costs. However, participants cover their travel and visa costs.
All RSSIA participants will have an opportunity:
— to attend the lectures of distinguished experts in various spheres of institutional economics and adjoining disciplines;
— to present and discuss research during seminars;
— to exchange the research experience with other RSSIA participants and faculty members;
— and consequently, to improve their research significantly.

2017 Fundamentals of Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) Online Institute

Embark on a journey of discovery in which you will learn more about the elements of high quality, rigorous Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). During this year’s online institute, you’ll explore PBLL’s connections with experiential learning, career pathways, 21st Century Skills, performance-based assessment, and your own instructional context. You will also connect with colleagues who have a common interest in quality PBLL implementation as experts in the field guide you through the creation of a project blueprint.

Complete Option 1 as part of a facilitated cohort (webinar) or Option 2 via self-paced study. Registration for this online institute is $25. Successfully complete all assigned tasks to earn an NFLRC Digital Badge, which qualifies you to apply for the NFLRC PBLL Intensive Summer Institute, Pathways to PBLL, offered in Honolulu in 2017. Funding Opportunity: Russian Studies Workshop Summer Russian Study Fellowship (Indiana U.)

The Russian Studies Workshop (RSW) at Indiana University (IU) is offering $6500 to cover tuition/mandatory fees (approximately $3000), and living costs to eligible students who enroll in a 6-credit graduate Russian course in the IU Summer Language Workshop (SLW) during the Summer 2017 session.

Eligibility: Students who: 1) are entering a PhD program in a social science discipline at a US university in Fall 2017; and 2) intend to study Russian at any level in SLW from June 5 to July 28, 2017.

Academic Program: Maymester in Russia 2017 (Vanderbilt U.)

Vanderbilt University’s Russian Department is offering a Maymester cultural immersion program in Russia for May-June 2017(RUSSIAN 2210: Russia Today: Political, Socio-economic, and Cultural Change).

The program includes community service, lectures on topics being explored by participants (politics, economics, sociology, culture, history, art, etc.), Russian language lessons, interaction with Russian university students, excursions to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and provincial towns, home stays, and opportunities for reflection.

+ Russian Orthodox Church – assist with restoration work at a local church,

The Midwest Slavic Association and The Ohio State University (OSU) Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) are pleased to announce the 2017 Midwest Slavic Conference to be held at OSU April 7-9, 2017. Conference organizers invite proposals for panels or individual papers addressing all disciplines related to Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and Southeastern Europe. The conference will open with a keynote address by Anne Garrels about her latest book, Putin Country: A Journey into the Real Russia on Friday, April 7th, followed by two days of panels.

Please send a one-paragraph abstract and a brief C.V. in a single PDF format tocsees@osu.edu by January 20th. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate. Limited funding is available for undergraduate and graduate student lodging with preference given to out-of-state participants.

Academic Program: The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (U. of Wisconsin-Madison)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is currently accepting applications for intensive study of Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Funding Opportunities:

New for 2017: Title VIII Fellowships for graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens. Fellowships will cover tuition and fees, as well as provide a stipend of $2,500 to cover living expenses for the summer
FLAS Fellowships for U.S. citizens and permanent residents
Fee Remission (scholarship)

**Please note: the priority deadline to apply to CESSI has been moved up to February 1, 2017. Applicants interested in a UW-Madison FLAS Fellowship must complete a separate FLAS Application by February 13, 2017. (Students from FLAS-granting institutions should apply for funding from their home campus before applying for a UW-Madison FLAS). CESSI will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis until April 3, 2017. However, financial support is not guaranteed for applications submitted after February 1.

Scheduling of all courses is contingent upon enrollment. Students should apply to CESSI as early as possible to help ensure that their desired class will be offered. CESSI 2017 will also feature a weekly lecture series (in English) on various topics of interest to people in the field of Central Eurasian studies and a rich program of cultural events and field trips related to the countries of Central Eurasia.

The CESSI consortium is comprised of international and area studies centers at major U.S. universities working together to provide high-quality, summer instruction in the languages and cultures of Central Eurasia.

The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute is now accepting applications for its 2017-2018 Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies.

HURI’s fellowship program supports distinguished scholars from around the world to carry out research in residence on topics pertaining to Ukrainian Studies. While at HURI, they can connect with experts and make use of the resources at Harvard University, including its vast library collections.

For the 2017-2018 academic year, the following fellowships are offered:

The Jaroslaw and Nadia Mihaychuk Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
The Eugene and Daymel Shklar Research Fellowships (mid-career)
The Ukrainian Studies Fund Research Fellowships (mid-career)

Fellows receive a stipend ($3,300 per month) to assist with the cost of housing, health insurance, and living expenses. The fellowships also provide direct roundtrip travel to Harvard University.

Eligibility: Individuals must have demonstrated a commitment to Ukrainian Studies and hold a doctorate in history, literature, philology, culture, or a related area of study in the humanities and social sciences fields. Proposals for projects lasting three to nine months are considered.

We represent the International Relations Office of Dostoevsky Omsk State University, Russia.

Our department would like to invite students to participate in our Russian Language Summer School that is designed for international students who are interested in learning Russian language and would like to delve into Russian traditional culture.

The course covers a balance of language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), grammar at an appropriate level from beginner to advanced and includes 72 academic hours of tuition.

Russian Language classes are taught by experienced language teaching professionals (teachers of Russian as a Foreign Language) and follow a communicative approach to language teaching. In addition to in-class Russian language instruction, students will attend lectures of cultural and academic interest.

The social and cultural program of Summer School is designed to help participants gain a valuable overview of Russian culture based on local heritage. We want to show participants the wide diversity of Russian culture, which is why we have built a great program for participants to keep them learning, exploring Omsk and experiencing new things.

Upon the completion of the program, students will get the Russian Language School Certificate (3 ETCS).

Late Socialism: Second-World Modernity in Global Circulation

This volume of Studies in Slavic Cultures invites contributions that explore the culture of Late Socialism from a transnational perspective. Taken to be the period from the death of Stalin to the beginning of Perestroika (mid-1950s to the mid-1980s), Late Socialism is not merely a transitionary phase between a totalitarian regime and the liberalizations of impending collapse. Rather, it is a period with rich potential to explore the particularity and comparability of second-world modernity in a cross-cultural framework.

This period is marked by increasing international contacts and cross-cultural transfers not only with the Western world, but also with the cultures and subcultures of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Scholarship on Russo-Soviet culture often oscillates between two overreaching claims. On the one hand, some Slavists interpret Russo-Soviet culture, history, and politics as sui generis, invoking a long tradition of an exceptionalist Russia, as “neither East nor West.” On the other hand, a competing tendency has insisted upon a comparitivist Russia, one in which Russia belongs to the same temporal-spatial modernity as Europe, yet inevitably therefore “backward” on a shared scale of cultural development.

Taking insight from Michael David-Fox’s Crossing Borders, which convincingly deconstructs this binary opposition in favor of an alternative lens “marked by webs of meaning, multicausal explanations, and pluralistic rather than exclusionary interpretive frameworks,” we invite articles that examine the particularities of Late Socialist culture, putting them into diverse geopolitical and cross-cultural constellations.
