Language Training: Summer Online Russian (Wayne State University)

Wayne State Russian Program offers first-year Russian (RUS 1010and RUS 1020) online in a synchronous format. Below are answers to frequently asked questions about this program. If your questions aren’t answered below, please write Laura Kline at af7585@wayne.edu

General Information

1) TEXTBOOK: Which textbook do we use and how many chapters do we cover?

We use Beginner’s Russian by Anna Kudyma, Frank Miller, and Olga Kagan. We cover 5 chapters each semester, for a total of 10 chapters in the first year.

2) PLATFORM: How is the online course taught?

Our online Russian courses are taught live online (synchronous) with a live instructor. We use Blackboard Collaborate as our platform; it is free to students registered at Wayne. Students will be familiarized with the technology before the course begins.

3) MEETING TIMES & DATES: When do the classes meet?

Both classes meet TuTh from 12:00-3:20 live online.

RUS 1010 is offered in the Spring Semester (5/08/17 – 6/27/17).

RUS 1020 is offered in the Summer Semester (6/28/17 – 8/18/17).

4) WSU FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT? Do these classes meet the language requirement?

The requirement is for 3 semesters of a foreign language – through 2010. These are the first two semesters. You can take RUS 2010 in the fall to complete the requirement.

Travel: Guided Tour of Moscow (Stichting Libertas International)

Dates of Trips: 4th – 11th June 2017 & 18th – 25th June 2017

Description:

During the one week of the trip you will visit all the famous tourist attractions, see the Red Square and Kremlin and meet a group of other international fellow travelers who will share the experience with you!

The participants will arrive on Sunday. They will be met at the airport and driven to the accommodation. During the following days they will be accompanied by an English speaking guide.

Each of the days the participants will have breakfast in the house and after the breakfast will be pick up by the comfortable minibus. The minibus will take the group together with the guide to various places in the city and in the evening will bring the group back to the house.

Internship: Career-Focused Summer Internships in Russia (Crossroads Eurasia)

The deadline for CrossroadsEurasia summer internships in Russia has been extended to March 30, 2017.


Please let your students know about this career-focused summer work experience.

Students can choose one of three options:

  • Camp counseling. One of the best introductions to Russia one can have. Best for beginners of the language, looking for a friendly and structured atmosphere.
  • Teaching English. Highly immersive and flexible, with coaching by local teachers. Similar in style to well-known overseas programs for recent graduates. Recommended for heritage speakers, and those students with at least intermediate level of Russian.
  • Translation. As close as students will come to actually working in Russia. We recommend it both to students interested in translation specifically as well as advanced or heritage speakers, looking for an experience like no other.

Post-program, students receive career coaching to help them communicate the value of the experience, and an alumni network can inform their next career steps.  

Internships are located in places where the pace of life is slower — Kostroma, Voronezh, and Ryazan. In every location, students spend time with locals and come away with some genuine friendships. Every city has a local coordinator.

Accommodations, meals, visa support and travel assistance is provided.

Internship: Summer Internship Programs (Novosibirsk, Russia)

Program Dates: Mid-June-Mid-July, 2017

There are still several spaces available for summer internship programs in Novosibirsk and in the Altai area.

These Summer Internships are offered at the children’s camps that will be run from mid-June until mid-July in a comfortable and relaxing tourist base in the delightful countryside of the Altai Krai in the low foothills of the Altai mountains and in a tourist camp located on the bank of the beautiful Katun River in the picturesque Altai mountains area of the Altai Republic. For the international interns participating in one or two sessions of the summer camp there is a special offer of a two-week intensive Russian study session in the city of Novosibirsk from July 13th through July 26th that comprises 20 lessons of Russian per week in a small group, two excursions in Novosibirsk per week and FREE ACCOMMODATION in a centrally located apartment.  Tours of Novosibirsk and trips to the beautiful Siberian towns of Tomsk, Irkutsk and to magnificent Lake Baikal will be organized before and after the camp sessions.

These internship positions are open to university students. No previous teaching experience, no previous knowledge of Russian is required. Internships at the children’s summer camps comprise teaching foreign languages and creativity workshops, acting as camp counselors etc. Participating in our internship program, students will gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession while being immersed in the Russian culture and having intensive practice in the Russian language. Internship fees are very reasonable.

Prof. Devel.: STARTALK Summer Institute “Proficiency-based Pedagogy for Russian” (Middlebury School of Russian)

Middlebury School of Russian is pleased to announce the 2017 STARTALK Summer Institute “Proficiency-based Pedagogy for Russian” intended for novice teachers of Russian and graduate students with no or limited teaching experiences.

The Institute provides participants with unique opportunities to gain a solid foundation in second language acquisition theory and language proficiency framework, and to transfer this knowledge into classroom practice. Participants will create teaching materials for different levels of instruction, implementing STARTALK-endorsed best teaching practices, and engage in practice-teaching in a safe environment with guidance from experienced language practitioners.

The Institute consists of two parts: a 5-day online session (June 19-23, 2017) and a 12-day on-campus session in Middlebury, VT (July 12-23, 2017); both sessions are mandatory. During the on-line session participants will engage in learning and discussing theoretical approaches to language acquisition and principles of proficiency-based pedagogy, so that the on-campus session can be dedicated to applying this theoretical knowledge to classroom teaching and material development. During the on-campus session, participants will brainstorm, design, and implement curricular units, lessons and activities.

Institute’s participants will experience the unique immersive environment of the Middlebury Russian School. By living in the language, participants themselves will see how a learning community of people who speak Russian with varying levels of fluency can be built and sustained.

Tuition, lodging expenses, meals, textbooks, and classroom materials are covered by the STARTALK grant, and each participant is eligible to receive a travel reimbursement for up to $300. Participants will receive one course unit of graduate credit.

 NEW FOR 2017: This year the STARTALK Institute has received an award to offer up to 5 scholarships to cover tuition for the 1-Week Refresher Course (July 2-9). These scholarships are competitive and will be awarded to those admitted STARTALK participants who need to “update” their language skills before starting the on-campus program on July 12. Academic Job: Russian Instructorship (Portland State University)

The Russian Program at Portland State University’s Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for a renewable one-year position as instructor teaching undergraduate Russian language at .72 FTE. The position is for the academic year beginning September 16, 2017, and is renewable. Informational interviews will be conducted by Skype and possibly additional onsite interviews.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach 26 credits of undergraduate Russian language and culture courses from the beginning to advanced levels, according to the needs of the program (8 credits/.6666 FTE in fall, 10 credits/.8333 FTE in winter, and 8 credits/.6666 FTE in spring).
  • Maintain regular office hours.
  • Participate on program, departmental, college and/or university committees as assigned by the Chair and/or Section Head, and regularly attend faculty meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

– Master’s degree or equivalent in Russian language, literature, linguistics or related field.
– Experience teaching Russian at the college level.
– Native or near-native fluency in Russian and in English.

Preferred Qualifications

– ACTFL OPI training.
– Experience with and affinity for team teaching.
– Experience working with heritage speakers of Russian.

Prof. Devel.: STARTALK: Transitioning to Teaching Language Online (U. of Minnesota)

STARTALK: Transitioning to Teaching Language Online (TTLO)

June 12-July 2, 2017 (3-week, online course)

This STARTALK program is designed for K-16 teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, or Urdu who want to teach their language online.

Offered completely online, this 3-week, intensive course will give teacher participants the experience of being an online learner. Course content will focus on many different facets of a successful online language course, such as creating community, time management strategies for teachers and students, choosing appropriate technology tools for communicative-based activities, and developing a variety of online activity types. In addition to exploring these aspects of teaching online, participants will see these concepts in action in model online language activities. By the end of the course, participants will have a portfolio of activities ready to be incorporated in an online course.

Study Abroad: Summer School of Russian (HSE)

Minimum: 12 hours of Russian language instruction per week
Maximum: 30 hours of Russian language instruction per week

Levels of Russian
А2 through В2 (with a possibility of C1, if there is enough interest)
Basic knowledge of Russian is required. If you are a complete beginner, you can take introductory classes with the Russian Language Center via Skype before your program begins.
Special courses are offered for heritage speakers of Russian.

Unique features of the program
– Live with Russian-speaking roommates in a HSE dormitory
– Study with Russian student tutors in your dormitory (homework help, conversation practice, etc.)
– Enroll in specialized courses (including “Russian Through Politics” and “Language of Business Media”)
– Explore beyond Moscow through optional program modules at HSE campuses in St. Petersburg and Perm (if there is enough interest to make a group)

Additional options
It is possible to combine the summer school program with an internship (non-paid) in such areas as: International Relations, Journalism, Philology, Marketing, Public Relations, and more.

Study Abroad: Second Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (Astana, Kazakhstan)

Nazarbayev University (Astana, Kazakhstan), in collaboration with the University of Arizona, is pleased to announce the Second Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES). We are now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as working professionals for our 2017 summer session. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2017. Program dates for SSRES 2017: May 26-July 22 (8 weeks)

The main component of SSRES in 2017 will be an Intensive 8-week Course in Russian Language (all levels are welcome) OR an Intensive 8-week Course in Beginner’s Kazakh Language. The program offers 120 contact hours of in-class instruction in all aspects of these languages and one elective course in the Eurasian Studies curriculum taught in English. Students can choose one from the following elective courses:

  • HST 100 History of Kazakhstan (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)
  • HST 104 Central Asian History II (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)
  • WLL 230 Survey of Post-Soviet Russian Literature and Culture (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)

In additional to the core program, the students will have an opportunity to learn some elementary Kazakh and get an introduction to Kazakh culture by taking a weekly non-credited practical course in Kazakh Language and Culture (once a week on Fridays, free and included in the program). Students, enrolled in Kazakh, will be able to take a similar course in Russian Language and Culture.

American students have an option to apply to the program through The University of Arizona Global Initiatives and earn US-based academic credits.
