Acad. Job: Southeastern European Studies / Croatian Language and Culture Lecturer

The Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES) in UBC’s Faculty of Arts invites applications for an initial three-year full-time appointment in Slavic and Eastern European Studies at the rank of Lecturer, effective September 1, 2024.

Lecturer positions entail a probationary first year, and are non-tenure-track appointments, renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association. A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) per year and service assignments amounting to approximately 20% of the full-time commitment.

Tenure-track position in Russian Studies (Hamilton College)

Hamilton College’s Department of German, Russian, Italian, and Arabic invites applications for a tenure-track position in Russian Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2024. The Department seeks candidates of native or near-native fluency in Russian whose research interests focus on pre-Soviet literature, arts, or translation. Interdisciplinary subjects and participation in related departments are strongly encouraged. We are particularly interested in candidates who can also teach the literatures and cultures of other Slavic and/or West Eurasian peoples (Ukrainians, Poles, Czechs, etc.) or Georgian, Armenian, Turkic, or Yiddish literatures. The candidate must possess demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching in both Russian and English, including all levels of language. We would expect the new hire to expand program co-curricular outreach (Russian club, films, field trips, etc) and create new courses that would have broad appeal to students. We seek candidates committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse community. Applications should include evidence of commitment to or experience in teaching and working with diverse student populations, either in a cover letter or in a separate statement. The position requires institutional service, including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year.

CFP Folklorica Special Issue: Teaching Folklore

Folklorica, the peer-reviewed journal of the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Folklore Association (an affiliate of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies), is seeking submissions for a thematic issue on “Teaching Folklore.” 

Potential topics include: How is folklore taught differently at different institutions and in different contexts? What is folklore’s role in language, culture, or literature classrooms? What guidance do non-folklorists need for teaching folklore-related topics? What are the challenges and successes of folklore classes? How might one incorporate the teaching of regional folklore in general folklore classrooms? How do folklorists engage differences between teaching theory vs. teaching research skills or teaching in the classroom vs. teaching in the field? How do folklorists deal with teaching challenges related to contemporary contexts (e.g., shifting technologies in the post-COVID university, teaching research practicalities and ethics in war-torn areas, etc.)?

Call for Applications – International Visiting Research Fellowship Programme in Regensburg for 2023/2024

As part of the project “A small but fertile field: strengthening Southeast European Studies in Regensburg” (seeFField), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

The project “A small but fertile field: strengthening Southeast European Studies in Regensburg” (seeFField) was launched in July 2022. One of its aims is to critically examine and integrate forms of knowledge production and knowledge transfer related to South-Eastern Europe in academic as well as non-academic fields. The project collaborates with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) and other existing and emerging Area Studies initiatives at the University of Regensburg (UR), such as the Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies (DIMAS), a cluster of institutions and initiatives that is currently at the leading edge of Area Studies in Germany. It is supported by Volkswagen Foundation as a part of the programme “Global Knowledge – Structural Strengthening of Small Disciplines”.
