ABOUT THE ROLE

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator in the delivery of research activity on the project entitled‘Debordering Europe through the 2022 Ukrainian Refugee Crisis: Analysis of Responses in the UK, Poland and Romania’. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) under the UK in a Changing Europe initiative, the project aims to analyse responses to the 2022 Ukrainian refugee crisis in three countries – Poland, Romania, and the UK. The project team will work across four groups of stakeholders in each country – policy-makers, third sector organisations, host communities, and refugees from Ukraine.

You will contribute primarily to research in Poland and the UK, including co-designing and administering surveys of refugee and host communities with third sector partner organisations, undertaking focus groups and interviews with the four stakeholder groups and supporting the senior fellow, Professor Kathryn Cassidy, with an in-depth policy analysis.

American Councils for International Education is hiring short-term Resident Directors for summer language immersion programs abroad for American high school and college students studying one of 14 critical languages including: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. 

Resident Directors must be proficient in the target language and typically have experience studying, working, or traveling in the host country. They are responsible for promoting student success by ensuring the health and safety of program participants, helping them to maintain a language policy, and assisting them in acclimating to life in the host country. In-country partner institutes are responsible for administering the academic curriculum. Therefore, the Resident Director position is a non-teaching position.

Job Summary

The position will advance international understanding and global competence through outreach and programming to a wide range of statewide, regional and public stakeholders, prospective HLS students, businesses, non-profit and community organizations, colleges, media, and the public. 

Department Specific Responsibilities

• Works as liaison between the HLS Global and Area Studies Centers, the Center for Rural Engagement (CRE), respective regional campuses, and Office for the Vice President of International Affairs (OVPIA) to advance the Internationalizing the IU Heartland initiative.
• Collaborates with IUN leadership to craft a specific set of international outreach activities that will directly support strategic goals and priorities for the campus. Develops and coordinates statewide initiatives with CRE, IU’s regional campuses, and with other universities and educational institutions. 
• Provides general coordination and support for HLS Centers’ outreach initiatives and develop new partnerships and initiatives that further the goals of HLS and its centers.
• Developes and markets the HLS online resource web page Access Global
• Coordinates professional development opportunities in international studies, global affairs, and civic leadership
• Develops, fosters, and manages statewide and regional international education programs that will provide more engagement and capacity in international issues, world affairs and cultures, and global careers
• Works with the HLS Recruitment and Admissions, Marketing and Communications, and Student Initiatives teams so new outreach initiatives support recruitment and retention and lead to a more diversified HLS student body.

General Responsibilities

• Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.
• Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public; approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.
• Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
• Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
• Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants; May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
• Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.
• Keep abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Develops and implements procedures to sustain and advance Foreign Language and Area Studies awards (FLAS) operations to align with the strategic priorities of Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS).
• Serves as the primary point of contact and provides schoolwide coordination for the FLAS competition, communications, and processing.
• Maintains all aspects of the Hamilton Lugar School Study Abroad Scholarship Program.
• Processes IUF (Indiana University Foundation reimbursements).
• FLAS Administration and Program Management:
  • Develops and implements procedures to sustain and advance FLAS operations to align with the strategic priorities of HLS.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for the HLS FLAS Program.
  • Coordinates regular updates to FLAS application and website, oversees FLAS email, provides direction to others regarding the program and provides for daily operations.
  • Works with the Director of Communication to strategically plan marketing and outreach initiatives for the FLAS program.
  • Plans, hosts, and presents public FLAS information sessions. Advises students on application process, course requirements, and consults with the Grants Compliance and Reporting Manager on complex fellowship policy issues.
  • Coordinates the entire FLAS application, review, and awarding processes for FLAS programs. Communicates with FLAS units to establish an efficient application and review process.
  • Maintains close contact with FLAS awardees to ensure student success and award compliance.
  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and assesses networking opportunities for awardees.
  • Assists in student recruitment by presenting to and meeting with prospective students regarding their opportunities within the FLAS program.
  • Compiles data on FLAS application and selection procedures and provides necessary information for the submission of FLAS reports to the US Department of Education.
