American Councils Study Abroad would like to remind all that applications for spring 2018 intensive language immersion programs are approaching.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, October 16, 2017.

Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP)

The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of Eurasia. Participants may choose from a wide range of regional languages, including: Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Dari, Farsi, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Romanian, Tajiki, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, and Yakut. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of the target language or a related language)

Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP)
RLASP offers participants the unique opportunity to study Russian language and area studies in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir or Almaty, while pursuing volunteer opportunities, internships, and cultural interests in an overseas immersion setting. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of Russian)

Language Training: Armenian Language Schools (ARMACAD)

After organizing 3 Armenian Studies Summer Schools and 1 winter school in Armenia ARMACAD is now pleased to announce its second International Armenian Language Winter School in Yerevan, Armenia to take place from December 04, 2017 to December 15, 2017.
This 12 days’ winter school offers participants to master skills in written and oral modern Armenian, reading and interpreting Armenian texts from different periods as well as rapidly deepening their knowledge in colloquial Armenian.

The program will be launched in Yerevan on December 04 and will continue till December 15, with only 1 free day on December 10.

This school is designed for students, at least 18 years-old, who want to make well-grounded progress in their knowledge of the Eastern Armenian language, deepen their knowledge of Armenian Grammar, colloquial speech and literary language. It offers an intensive Armenian language course spanning 40 hours, divided into 11 days of instruction and focusing on grammar, reading, speaking, and writing.

During the winter school lectures on Armenian literature, anthropology and history will also be offered, as one of the purposes of the school is to expand the academic network of our winter school participants in Armenia.

ARMACAD Armenian language winter school is open to anyone with upper elementary knowledge of the Armenian language. The Armenian language classes are organized with the academic interests of the participants in mind to ensure that BA, MA, Ph.D. students as well as post-docs and professors can benefit from it.

Travel: Alternative Spring Break (American Home)

Deadline for Applications: November 15, 2017 and December 1, 2017

Help one or more community organizations, such as the Youth Health and Education Center, Regional Veterans’ Home, Karl Liebnicht Orphanage, Russian Orthodox Church, Handicapped Children’s Association “Light”, while interacting with Russian university students and others and experiencing the wonders of provincial Russia.

Dates: March 3-11 and 10-18, 2018 (Saturday-Sunday)

Housing: Home stays (with home-cooked breakfasts and dinners)

Excursions: Vladimir, Suzdal and Bogoliubovo (UNESCO World Heritage Sites)

Program Fee: Approximately $510 (depending on the number of participants)
Fee includes room and board, excursions, transportation from/to Moscow airport, visa invitation, Russian language lessons, on-site administrative support;
Fee does not include visa application expenses (~$280), airfare, lunches, public transportation in Vladimir (~$0.25/ride), health/travel insurance

Leaders: Dr. Alexei Altonen (American Home Director of Special Projects), David Johnson (Vanderbilt University), Vladimir State University English students, American Home staff, and others in and around Vladimir

Group size: 5-10 participants (a minimum of 5 participants is generally required for each group)

Study Abroad: Spring Study Abroad (SRAS)

SRAS programs are based in Moscow, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Bishkek, Irkutsk, Kiev, and Vladivostok. Students can study a range of subjects including: security issues, history, international relations, government policy making, culture, languages, and more.

Funding Opportunity: Fulbright-Hays Fellowships (ACIE)

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) fellowships for advanced overseas Russian and Persian language study. Fulbright-Hays fellowships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Fellowship awards are made in the amount of $7,000 for semester programs and $4,000 for summer programs, and are available on the following programs:

Internship: Culture.pl in Warsaw (Adam Mickiewicz Institute)

Intern at the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw for UT students and recent graduates

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is accepting applications for semester-long unpaid internships during the academic year. The internship is open to UT graduate students and undergraduate students in their junior and senior years as well as recent graduates. Internships will take place at the Warsaw editorial office of Culture.pl, a leading website about Polish culture run by the institute.

Requirements:

• Current student at UT Austin
• Outstanding writing and editing skills (in English)
• Previous experience with website content management systems and/or social media
• Interest in Polish culture

Knowledge of Polish or enrollment in Polish language study or tutoring is preferred, but only required to receive travel funding.

The American Councils Balkan Language Initiative provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Participants may choose to study one of 5 regional languages including:

  • Albanian in Tirana, Albania
  • Bosnian in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgarian in Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Macedonian in Skopje, Macedonia
  • Serbian in Belgrade, Serbia or Podgorica, Montenegro

Conference: Russian Revolution: What’s Left? A Century in Revolution (Durham University)

Event date: September 29 – October 8

Durham University curatorial team is pleased to announce the special program of films, art-projects and discussions, titled What’s Left? A Century in Revolution, which is taking place at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle upon Tyne, between Friday 29 September and Sunday 8 October 2017.

The program is produced as part of the Cross-Language Dynamics (Open World Research Initiative Project) and is curated by a team of Durham scholars (Dušan Radunović as lead curator) and Tyneside Cinema Newcastle (Una Henry as curator).
