Funding: Kazakh, Uzbek & Uyghur Language Study (CESSI)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting applications for the Title VIII Fellowship! Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis for the following intensive courses:

  • Beginning Kazakh
  • Intermediate Kazakh
  • Beginning Uzbek
  • Intermediate Uzbek
  • Beginning Uyghur

U.S. citizens who are graduate students (including incoming students), scholars, and working professionals are eligible for the Title VIII Fellowship. Fellowships cover full tuition at CESSI plus a $2,500 stipend for the summer. International students and undergraduates may still apply for the tuition remission scholarship.

More about CESSI:

CESSI is an intensive, eight-week language program held each summer in Madison, Wisconsin. Students receive the equivalent of one year of language study during this time and will earn eight credits upon completion of the program. In addition to language classes, CESSI students have the opportunity to attend weekly lectures on Central Eurasia; participate in cultural events, including traditional cooking demonstrations; engage with local Central Eurasian communities; and network with other scholars of Central Eurasia. CESSI is a great opportunity for participants to gain language skills before conducting fieldwork or applying for jobs abroad.
