Call for Submissions: Virtual Student Paper Competition

Deadline: April 12, 2021

Student Paper Competition: Virtual Edition

Every year, the Russian Studies department at Macalester College organizes a research paper competition for students at local institutions. This year, the competition will be in a virtual format and is open to undergrads at all U.S. colleges and universities. Cash prizes awarded! Your project should be based on a term paper (or part of a senior thesis) on any topic relevant to Russia, Eastern/Central Europe, or Central Asia written in Spring 2020, Fall 2020, or work-in-progress from Spring 2021.

(1) Submit the title of your project and an abstract to
chadaga@macalester.edu by Monday, April 12. Your abstract should provide an overview of your paper, including its thesis and conclusions, and be no more than 300 words.

(2) Based upon the abstracts received, some participants will be selected to present their projects to the virtual public. These students will prepare slide presentations with voiceover (how-to instructions will be provided) and submit them by Monday, April 26. A panel of faculty judges will provide feedback.

(3) On Saturday, May 1, Macalester College will host a Zoom session with presenters, faculty judges, and guests. Each presenter will give a brief recap of their project and field questions. Afterwards, the judges will confer to select the top three presenters, who will receive cash prizes.
