Digital Scholar Fellowship (Consortium on Forced Migration)

Deadline: Open

The Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education (CFMDE) announces a call for applications for a Digital Scholar Fellowship. CFMDE is interested in hosting scholars with refugee or displaced backgrounds to participate in a virtual “residency” program during the 2022-23 academic year. Digital Scholars will give a series of guest lectures in Vassar classes and for a wider public (partial fellowship) or co-teach a class with a Vassar faculty partner (full fellowship). This initiative is being piloted in collaboration with the Institute for International Education, which is helping to facilitate connections to scholars. We are also seeking to connect with scholars outside of the IIE network.

Through this initiative, Vassar seeks to increase access to knowledges that prompt our students to put their commitments and struggles in a more global context. We seek to learn from scholars with a wide range of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Our initiative will also benefit Vassar faculty interested in a transnational network to exchange ideas on research and pedagogy.

We understand scholarship broadly. We welcome traditional academics as well as artists, scholar-practitioners and scholar-activists. A terminal degree is not required, nor is prior teaching experience. We seek applicants with expertise in areas across the humanities and social sciences, as well as foreign languages. Digital Scholars on a partial fellowship may give guest lectures in courses across multiple departments. Specific areas of interest include (but are certainly not limited to) Global Feminisms, Anthropology, and Religion.

Responsibilities for Digital Scholars on a partial fellowship include preparing lectures and discussion sessions for undergraduate students, meeting with students and faculty, and giving a presentation to the wider college community. Additional responsibilities for Scholars on a full fellowship include developing pedagogical materials (e.g. syllabus, readings, in-class materials) in conjunction with a Vassar faculty member, and advising students. Scholars must have reliable internet access.

Vassar faculty will provide mentorship and an introduction to the U.S. liberal arts college environment. Scholars will be supported by a stipend from CFMDE of $13,000 for a full fellowship and $6,000 for a partial fellowship.

Applicants should submit a resumé or curriculum vitae and short letter of interest to migrationdisplacement@vassar.edu. CFMDE staff will conduct brief interviews via Zoom. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
