Critical Languages Training, Funding, and Info Sessions (Arizona State University)

In the summer of 2021, the Critical Languages Institute (CLI) at Arizona State University will offer intensive training in 13 less-commonly-taught languages: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Uzbek. 

CLI offers students from across the US and beyond the opportunity to accelerate their language learning, with a full year or more equivalency of study (8-13 college credits). We focus on less-commonly taught languages of Russia, Eurasia and East Europe: for 30 years, CLI has opened student opportunities to compete for prestigious international fellowships and for careers in government, academia and business where global awareness is critical.

International Peace Scholarship

Deadline: December 15, 2020

International Peace Scholarship, established in 1949 to provide scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the US or Canada. The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. There are two parts to the application process. The first is filling out an on-line eligibility form, which is due December 15.  If you qualify (based on the eligibility form), you will be sent materials to complete the full application. The deadline for that is March 1.

 An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. A student who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada is not eligible. Scholarships are not given for online courses, research, internships or for practical training if not combined with coursework. In order to qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled and in residence for the entire school year. Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working only on dissertations are not eligible as first-time applicants.

Funding: National Digital Newspaper Program (National Endowment for the Humanities)

Deadline: January 14, 2021

The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress to create a national digital resource of historically significant newspapers published between 1690 and 1963, from all the states and U.S. territories. This searchable database will be permanently maintained at the Library of Congress (LC) and will be freely accessible online (see the Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers website).  An accompanying national newspaper directory of bibliographic and holdings information on the website directs users to newspaper titles available in all types of formats.  During the course of its partnership with NEH, LC will also digitize and contribute to the NDNP database a significant number of newspaper pages drawn from its own collections.

Apply to Coach Secondary School Teachers of English in Uzbekistan

The English Speaking Nation: Coaches Program (ESN:CP) strengthens secondary school teachers’ pedagogical and classroom English skills in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

PROGRAM DESIGN

ESN:CP will place highly trained U.S. educators in year-long program assignments in five regional Ministry of Public Education In-Service Training Institutes (INSETI) in Uzbekistan.

Each Coach will:

·         Spread high quality pedagogy standards to EFL teachers at local public schools utilizing a team-teaching model;

·         Cultivate a core of professional English language teacher-leaders in their assigned region by providing sustainable methods of clinical supervision to highlight the value of peer observation and feedback;

·         Support the English Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training (ESN:STT) program by conducting professional development activities for in-service teachers;

·         Teach EFL in secondary schools identified by the INSETI center;

·         Share U.S. culture and values with students and teachers in Uzbekistan through direct teaching in secondary schools and American Corners;

·         Assist in Embassy-sponsored trainings and conferences.

Viadrina International Program for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

The Viadrina International Program – for Graduates (VIP) as a funding program for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers has funds for 2021.The program is funded by the European University Viadrina and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The VIP aims to support the international networking of doctoral candidates and their stronger involvement in international research contexts and discourses.

International doctoral candidates may apply for research stays in 2021 at the European University Viadrina to get familiarize with the research environment at the Viadrina. These fellowships allow international doctoral candidates to get in touch with Viadrina professors for research co-operations or potential doctoral opportunities (e.g. joint degrees and cotutelle agreements). International doctoral candidates may apply for the following funding line:

•             Fellowships for research stays at the European University Viadrina (max. 3 months)

The application deadline is November 1, 2020 (23:59 pm CET).

CFP: Teaching the Languages of Central and Eastern Europe: Best Practices

NeMLA 2021 roundtable (March 8-14, 2021, Philadelphia) 

Update: NeMLA has confirmed that virtual participation will be available for this conference, so feel free to apply even if in-person may not be an option for you! 

This roundtable seeks input from instructors of less-commonly-taught languages of the former Eastern Bloc in an effort to share experiences and best practices across languages. Our goal is to bring together higher education instructors of foreign languages in the US (and possibly beyond) to facilitate collaboration and exchange successfully implemented ideas in pedagogy as well as the organization of academic language programs. While these languages are taught at various universities of North America, professional opportunities to compare and exchange such ideas and experiences are limited. We hope to establish a conversation across languages and institutions that can prove useful in the future implementation of best practices to attract and educate learners in these typically small language programs.

CFP: Anthology of Eastern and Central European Horror

In the imaginations of Western European and US authors, Eastern and Central Europe function as a maledicta terra, a cursed mythical land where dragons dwell. Michael Goddard claims that “Eastern Europe is presented condescendingly as the new Europe as if it had no history before 1989 and above all in terms of abjection and monstrosity.“ Some post-Soviet horror narratives contribute to this narrative – for example, the 1997 Russian film The Vampire (Упырь), which combines the genre of the “wild 90s” crime story with vampire film. Other narratives, from Marc Chagall’s artwork to Igor Ostachowicz’s novel The Night of the Living Jews (2012), lean towards disenchanting the idea of the region as the epitome of chaos and emancipating it from the condescending Western gaze. Still, very little is known about the function of horror fiction in post-Soviet space more broadly – an issue this project aims to remedy.
