CFP: Special Issue- Slavic Intelligence and Counterintelligence

International Journal of Intelligence and CounterIntelligence has opened a Call for papers for a Special Issue on Slavic Intelligence and Counterintelligence.

The fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War initiated the processes of transformation of societies and states that were part of the Warsaw Pact and Non-Aligned Movement in the Eurasian region. During the Cold War, these states were maintained by the firm hand of a repressive system. Intelligence and security agencies were the function of a totalitarian one-party government. The crisis in Southeast Europe continues, a source of numerous security threats to the stability and security of Europe, the EU, and NATO. Intelligence and counterintelligence agencies/services were involved in the process of strong and intense social and political change. This special issue on Slavic intelligence
and counterintelligence is intended to stimulate academic discussion on their activities during and after the Cold War, and the process of a transition into today’s hybrid threats. We are interested in research focusing on the analysis of organizations, operations, and the impact of intelligence security agencies (or the intelligence community where it existed) in Slavic-speaking countries.

Acad. Job: Lecturer in History (Western Colorado U)

Western Colorado University invites applications for a one-year Lecturer position in History beginning in August 2021. The History Program at Western Colorado University is part of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The Program has 2 full-time faculty members and approximately 45 Majors and three tracts: Standard History major, Secondary Licensure, and Public History. We are looking for innovative forward thinking faculty to help modernize our History program offerings.
 
Duties:

General area of specialization is European but second fields outside of US, Africa and Latin America are of interest especially experience or specialization in Digital History. Teaching load is 24 semester credits per academic year (4 courses per semester) and involves academic advising, assisting with the History League, program recruitment and the development of Digital History projects and/or course. There is also the opportunity to develop and deliver innovative courses in their area of expertise. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon strong performance and funding availability.

The journal prides itself on its almost 70-years tradition being published continuously since 1952 by the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. From 2020 onward, submissions in English are welcomed. Submissions are invited for two calls for papers.

The First Wave of Russian Emigration Symposium series 2020–22

The Research Centre for Russian Studies and Methodology of Eötvös Loránd Univeristy (Budapest), the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature RAS (Moscow), the Historical Faculty of Ural Federal University (Yekaterinburg) and the Vyacheslav Ivanov Research Centre (Rome) invite you to participate in the 2nd event of a series of symposia on The First Wave of Russian Emigration, which will take place on April 1, 2021, online.

The aim of the 2nd symposium “The First Wave of Russian Emigration: Cult and Everyday Life” is to explore a range of current research topics regarding the cults and everyday life practices of the first wave of Russian emigration between 1920–1940.

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) and the Slavic Reference Service (SRS) at the University of Illinois are excited to announce a Call for Applications for the 48th annual Summer Research Laboratory (SRL) program. Traditionally, the SRL is an in-person event, with scholars receiving support to travel to Champaign-Urbana.  Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, this year’s SRL will be held as a Virtual SRL (VSRL), with REEEC and SRS working to support scholars through remote research assistance, virtual programming, professional development opportunities, and collections and database access.

CFP: Innovative Practices and Pedagogies for Intl Development (Indiana U)

The Tobias Center for Innovation in International Development at Indiana University is hosting a virtual workshop on entitled “Innovative Practices and Pedagogies for Teaching Undergraduate International Development Studies.” The workshop will be held on June 7-8, 2021 from 10am-3pm ET.

Workshop participants are expected to both present at the workshop and attend all sessions, and they will receive a stipend of $750.00 for their participation. Participation will be capped at 20 people.

Dmitri Shostakovich: The Man, The Music, The Myth

Instructor: Harlow Robinson – expert in Soviet and Russian cultural history (Matthews Distinguished University Professor of History, Emeritus, Northeastern University)

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) was not only one of the greatest composers of the modern era but also a reluctant political figure.

Born in Tsarist Russia, Shostakovich witnessed many of the defining events of his times: the creation of the USSR, the long nightmare of Stalinist terror, Hitler’s invasion, the Cold War, Khrushchev’s “Thaw,” Brezhnev’s era of stagnation. All these experiences were inscribed in his music that provoked subjective responses and widely divergent political and psychological interpretations.
From the triumphant premiere of his First Symphony in Leningrad in 1926 until his death, Shostakovich remained one of the most prominent representatives of Soviet culture. He received numerous honors from the Communist Party to which he belonged, and yet the extent of his personal and creative loyalty to the Soviet regime remains a hotly debated issue.

The School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a Lecturer of Russian, beginning August 1, 2021. The position is full-time with an expected teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester (24 per academic year). We seek candidates with a commitment to and demonstrated experience with innovative teaching and curriculum development in content-based and cross-cultural language studies in a STEM-driven environment. Lang. Training: Summer Language Institute (Pitt)

Priority Deadline: March 1, 2021

The priority application deadline for Pitt’s Summer Language Institute is coming up in one week on March 1st. Apply online www.sli.pitt.edu

What is a “priority” application deadline? 
Applicants who meet the deadline will be prioritized for admission in high demand classes and will receive full consideration for an SLI Scholarship. Also, March 1st is a strict deadline for eligible applicants to apply for a summer FLAS from Pitt’s CREEES (FLAS applications are right on the SLI admissions application).

What happens after March 1st? 
After March 1st, SLI welcome applications on a rolling basis throughout the spring and for as long as classes have open spots and/or funding is still available. Space in high demand courses and scholarship funding can become depleted as the spring wears on, so later applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible after the priority deadline. Prospective participants may also write to us directly at sliadmin@pitt.edu to inquire about the availability of space and funding in their language/level.
SLI’s intensive programs are scheduled to begin on June 7th in Pittsburgh and online.
