Funding: American Councils Title VIII Research Programs (Russia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia)

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for the next cycle of U.S. Department of State Title VIII Research Fellowships in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships are offered in two categories:

  • Title VIII Research Scholar Program: 
    Provides full support for research in policy-relevant fields in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.
  • Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training Program: 
    Provides full support for research and individualized language instruction in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; logistical support; and up to 10 academic hours per week of language instruction. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

Lang. Training/Podcast: Зелёная лампа (The Green Lamp)

The host of this podcast is a PhD in Russian literature, a school literature teacher from Saint Petersburg with 40 years of experience. In every episode a professional actor reads a short story, followed and/or preceded by a discussion where the host helps listeners to analyze and understand the story.
The entire podcast is in Russian, although the works selected by the teacher are not necessarily written by Russian authors. The show makes an emphasis on finding links between Russian and foreign literature and overall seems to have somewhat of a globalist slant: it is produced collaboratively by a Russian/Ukrainian/American team.
The show is professionally produced and is a good opportunity for Russian learners to hear a pure, rich Russian language while enjoying a quality discussion of familiar works.

Lang. Training: Online Beginning, Intermediate Czech (KU)

The University of Kansas offers two years of beginning and intermediate Czech on-line in 2019–2020. The classes are taught by Dr. Mila Saskova-Pierce. The classes meet twice a week for synchronous instruction using ZOOM platform. Free textbook, texts and other pedagogical materials are available in Blackboard or word format.

The courses follow the ACTFL format, the five Cs, as well the Common European Framework of Languages (CEFR) which is the European Proficiency Assessment.

The classes accept university students as well as independent learners, who enroll in the class.  At the end of the four semesters students should be able to perform on the ACTFL intermediate level of speaking and writing proficiency as well as of reading and listening comprehension.

Study Abroad: Hungarian Language and Culture Summer Course (Debrecen, Hungary)

The Debrecen Summer University deals with teaching Hungarian as a foreign language and spreading Hungarian culture. Its aim is to promote a deeper knowledge of the Hungarian language and culture. Teaching a language is inseparable from mediating the cultural values ​​of that nation. The cultural programs are recommended by Debrecen Summer University courses therefore make a significant contribution to the achievement of the primary task of teaching the Hungarian language at the highest possible level. Accordingly, most of the courses also include programs that, besides actively spending leisure time, also serve to familiarize Hungarian culture with the informal form of language learning.

The age limit for participants is 16 years old.

The Hungarian Language and Culture Summer Course includes intensive language instruction for all levels, cultural excursions, and connections with local students.

RUS w406 FIRST-YEAR RUSSIAN I will run from June 6–August 16, 2019, and is the first of three semesters of online Russian classes that will be offered. Lang. Training: Online Beginning BCS, Fall 2019 (Kansas)

Learn the basics of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) in this online beginning BCS course offered at the University of Kansas this fall. Here is the description of the course:

BCRS 150 – Beginning Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian I (3 credit hours) Fall 2019
Fundamentals of B/C/S grammar, reading, speaking, and writing. Introduction to the cultural context in which B/C/S discourse occurs. ONLINE course, designed to accommodate the needs of students regardless of age, educational background, or occupation who want to acquire some basic communicative skills in B/C/S. No previous knowledge of BCS or other foreign languages required.

The course is open to non-KU and non-degree-seeking students. For more information, interested students should contact the instructor, Marta Pirnat-Greenberg, at mpg@ku.edu.
