Study Abroad: Summer Language Program in Ukrainian and Croatian (Uni. Kansas)

The University of Kansas invites applications to its summer programs in Ukrainian and Croatian language:

Ukrainian Language in L’viv, Ukraine

 June 3 – July 17, 2018

Expand regional expertise and Ukrainian language skills during this 6 week program in medieval L’viv.  The program is offered in conjunction with Ivan Franko National University; 6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas.  FLAS eligible.  The on-site director, University of Kansas faculty member Dr. Oleksandra Wallo, is a L’viv native and alumna of Ivan Franko National University with more than ten years of experience teaching Ukrainian language and culture at U.S. universities.  Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students.  No previous knowledge of Ukrainian is necessary. 

Language Institute in Zadar, Croatia

May 20 – June 30, 2018

During this 6 week summer program, students receive highly individualized Croatian language instruction while living in Zadar on the Adriatic coast.  A program of lectures and cultural activities complement language instruction.  Students study at LinguaCroatica, run by Prof. Mile Mamić of the University of Zadar.  6 credit hours are awarded by the University of Kansas.  FLAS eligible.  Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students.  One year of college-level Croatian is necessary for participation.

Language Training: First Year Russian Online (Wayne State Uni.)

Wayne State is offering the first year of Russian online this summer. Classes will be taught Tuesday and Thursday, 12:00PM – 03:20PM live online via Blackboard Collaborate (free to students who register).

Language Training: Russian Language & Culture Immersion Program (STARTALK)

This intensive program is designed to provide highly motivated students with an opportunity to quickly acquire and/or improve proficiency in Russian, which has been designated by the U.S. government as a “critical need” language. Fluent Russian speakersare currently in high demand in international business, science, military, and government sectors. Participants will also learn about contemporary Russia’s influence, politics, national identity, and culture for a well-rounded, holistic view of a fascinatingnation in transition.

Students who are accepted into this competitive program will engage in a six-week residential immersion program at CSUN during Summer 2018.

 2018 SUMMER IMMERSION RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

v  Level of Instruction: Novice-Mid to Advanced

v  Location: Campus of California State University, Northridge

v  Duration: June 7, 2018 – July 13, 2018

ELIGIBILITY: Russian language learners from any university, community college, ROTC program, or local high school are welcome to apply. Selected applicants will be screened and assessed by program staff.

Selected participants will be tested to determine entrance-level proficiency and placed in appropriate learning cohorts. Those admitted must commit to fully apply themselves to the program and to follow it to completion. Participantspledge to speak exclusively in Russian throughout the program.

Language Training: Hebrew and Polish Summer Institute (Arizona State Uni. in Tempe)

Deadline for Scholarship Applications: February 28, 2018

Arizona State University of Tempe’s Critical Language Institute has announced their Summer Language Training Programs. This year, they have extended the deadline for scholarships and applications to their Hebrew and Polish Intensive Language Trainings.

These intensive courses taught at Arizona State University in Tempe cover an entire academic year’s worth of material in seven weeks.  It’s an ideal way for students with previous language experience to get the basics of their next language.

Prof. Devel.: Russian Teachers Development Course (Riga, Latvia)

RUSSIAN TEACHERS DEVELOPMENT COURSE

The Russian Teachers Development Course has been created for non-native and native speakers of Russian teaching at primary, secondary, vocational schools, colleges and universities or language centrs for adults at Beginners, Elementary and Intermediate levels. It is recommended that the participants have a level of Russian at CEF level no less than B1 (B1, B1+, B2 or B2+). The participants can choose to study 1 or 2 weeks.

Objectives: To master language training, learning and teaching methodologies. The focus will be on teaching techniques of a foreign language without translation but by the help of explanation.

Outcome: Russian Teachers Development course will improve your confidence in lesson delivery and expand your range of methodological approaches to enhance classroom practice.

Study Abroad: Eurasian Regional Language Program (American Councils)

American Councils is currently accepting applications for its summer 2018 Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP).  The application deadline is February 15, and applications can be submitted here.

About the Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP)

The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of Eurasia. Participants may choose to study one of 16 regional languages:

Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Dari, Farsi, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Romanian, Tatar, Ukrainian, Uzbek, or Yakut

PROGRAM DATES, Summer 2018

June 6 – August 9, 2018

KEY FEATURES

  • Expert university faculty with a unique understanding of U.S. students and American academic culture;
  • Classrooms of only 1 to 5 participants to maximize individual attention to each learner’s needs;
  • 15-20 hours per week of in-class target language instruction in grammar, conversation, culture and area studies;
  • U.S. academic credit for coursework in the target language;
  • Home-stay housing with carefully vetted host families;
  • Conversation partners who assist U.S. students with language learning and help them find a niche in their host-country communities;

COST

Program cost includes tuition, room and board, cultural activities, visa support, comprehensive overseas insurance, 24/7 emergency support, pre-departure orientation, and academic credit through Bryn Mawr College.

FINANCIAL AID

Students admitted to American Councils programs are eligible to receive financial support from a wide range of sources, including the U.S. Department of State (Title VIII), Boren, Gilman, FLAS, and the American Councils Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.

Additionally, American Councils is pleased to offer special funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Fellowship of $4000 is available to overseas Persian language students in Dushanbe, Tajikistan during the Summer 2018 session. Study Abroad: Summer Language Program in Astana, Kazakhstan (Nazarbayev University and Uni. Arizona)

Deadline for Applications: February 25, 2018

Nazarbayev University (Astana, Kazakhstan), in collaboration with the University of Arizona, has  announced their next session of the Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES). They are now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as working professionals for the 2018 summer sessions. There are both 8-week and 5-week programs available.

Study Abroad: Peace and Security in the Caucasus Program (American Councils)

American Councils is now accepting applications for their Peace & Security in the South Caucasus Program!

Summer 2018 program dates: June 28 – August 4, 2018

 While rich in natural resources, scenic beauty, and vibrant cultures, the South Caucasus continues to be hampered by age-old conflicts and political instability. Based in Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia, this five-week summer program explores cultural identity and nationalism, development strategies, the emergence of new political systems and parties, and ongoing efforts to foster peace throughout the region.

The academic program features approximately twenty-two hours per week of in-class instruction. Content courses are designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of modern political history of the region, security issues, nationalism and identity, state-building, and democratization. As part of the academic program, participants also receive language instruction at any level in one of the regional languages, including Azeri, Chechen, Georgian, or Russian; no prior language study is required.

The program includes weekly excursions and cultural activities, housing with local host families, two meals per day, a comprehensive pre-program orientation, and visa and logistical support. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive 8-10 credits in political science and sociology, issued through Bryn Mawr College.

Language Training: Summer Language Study (ASU Critical Languages Institute)

Deadline for applications: January 26, 2018

The Critical Languages Institute at Arizona State University’s Melikian Center is accepting applications for its 2018 summer language programs in the U.S. and abroad.

CLI offers intensive courses in less commonly taught languages in the U.S. and overseas. CLI students pay a flat fee of $1,500 for up to 13 semester credits, in addition to study-abroad fees if they opt to study overseas.

Generous scholarships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-students:

– Department of State Title VIII Fellowships for selected languages

– ROTC Project GO Scholarships for selected languages

– Melikian Scholarships for all languages

– Language-specific support for several languages
