Update: Due to the on-going complications of COVID-19 the SGSA has decided to move the conference online.

The Slavic Graduate Students Association (SGSA) in conjunction with the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Russian East European and Eurasian Center, and the History Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invites submissions of presentation proposals from scholars across disciplines to this year’s conference, titled “Shifting Grounds: Changing Models of Nature in the Former Soviet Sphere.” We invite all professors, graduate students, and professionals to submit papers related to our topic for consideration.

Pitt’s Summer Language Institute is pleased to announce several open positions for summer instructors at SLI 2022. These appointments run from June 6 – July 15/29, 2022 (end date depends on language) in Pittsburgh, though there may also be a limited number of online (fully synchronous) opportunities.
We are a friendly collective at SLI and the program is INTENSIVE. The best candidates will be enthusiastic teachers who thrive on constant contact with the students. MA in the target language or related field and classroom experience using proficiency-based methods are required.

Job Posting: Conference Manager, AATSEEL

AATSEEL is inviting applications for a new Conference Manager to begin shortly after the 2022 Conference in Philadelphia.

This is a contract position, with an annual honorarium of $12,000 (paid in quarterly installments). In terms of work schedule, the CM has numerous, regular duties from August through February associated with planning and running the conference. The workload in the other six months is minimal. The AATSEEL Conference will be alternating between an in-person event and a virtual event, so the CM will be expected to run both types of conferences.

Planning the in-person conference involves traveling to the host city over a year in advance to identify potential venues, soliciting bids to help select an appropriate location, and working with the Executive Director to confirm the budget for the conference. Given the organization’s financial constraints, finding an affordable venue is always challenging.

Acad. Job: Aleksanteri Institute Visiting Fellowships

The Aleksanteri Institute is pleased to invite applications for its Visiting Fellowships for the academic year 2022-2023 from scholars holding a PhD degree and pursuing research that relates to the Institute’s research profile. The Fellowship carries a monthly grant to cover all the expenses related to the research visit, which can range from two to three months. The Visiting Fellowship scheme is intended for scholars who reside outside Finland.

The deadline for applications is 13 February 2022.

Join us for a lecture, Q&A discussion, and workshop with Anastasia Fomina, Russian environmental activist. Anastasia Fomina is a youth activist and Fridays for Future Russia climate strike organizer from the industrial city of Arkhangelsk, Russia. She is also a lead organizer for the regional environmental movement “42” (Экологическое движение 42), which focuses on climate change education and waste processing in the Russian context. Fomina translates materials for the International Anti-Nuclear Network, holds solo pickets, organizes global strikes, and hosts lectures and film screenings about climate change. Fomina’s commitment to intersectional approaches to environmental activism has led her to coordinate the first feminist movement in Arkhangelsk. Conducted in Russian with English interpretation. Located in Clinton, MA, the Museum of Russian Icons was created by the late collector and business leader Gordon Lankton in 2004, opened to the public in 2006, and today hosts a distinctive, world-class, thematically-based art collection of more than 1,000 objects. It is also home to the Center for Icon Studies, the research arm of the Museum, which publishes the peer-reviewed online Journal of Icon Studies. Open to the public four days a week, the Museum organizes its own exhibitions from the permanent collection and also hosts visiting exhibitions from other museums and collections. It has an annual budget of $1.1 million, a 10-member Board, 14 staff and 15 volunteers, about 450 members and annual attendance of about 11,000.

The Board seeks an arts professional to lead all museum exhibitions, programming, curatorial and collections management functions; maximize fundraising and museum & online attendance; and develop relationships with collectors, curators, gallerists, educators, researchers and museum professionals nationally and internationally.

Soyuz is broadly conceived as a group of scholars working in postsocialist studies. It serves as a vehicle to promote the study of postsocialist societies, the dissemination of current research, and collaborative and interdisciplinary work among an international community of scholars. For a long time, Soyuz had a listserv through H-Net/H-Commons, but we decided to make a more inclusive listserv with a platform (Google Groups) that is easy for people to manage. Some of you have already been added to the listserv. If you want to be added or change your email address, just email the Soyuz webmaster Dafna Rachok (darachok [at] iu.edu). The National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon are pleased to announce the 2022 Pragmatics and Language Learning Conference (PLL 2022) which will take place online on September 12-14, 2022.

The conference main theme will be Teaching and Learning Interactional Pragmatics in a Digital World, but we welcome a broad range of topics in pragmatics, discourse, interaction, and sociolinguistics in their relation to second and foreign language learning, education, and use, approached from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. We hope this conference brings together scholars and educators from all around the world who are interested in discussing both established and innovative approaches to teaching and learning pragmatics to strengthen our understanding of principles and practices in PLL and push the field to new and exciting directions in research and practice.
