CFP: ASEEES 2022 – Cognitive Approaches to Russian Culture

We are seeking papers on cognitive perspectives on Russian literature and artistic culture for the Chicago meeting of ASEEES, November 10-13 or the virtual session October 13-14. “Cognitive” here is viewed broadly and may include any aspect of cognitive, developmental, evolutionary, behavioral, or cultural psychology; or any subset of the social sciences or humanities that are informed by them. Accepting applications for SLI’s 2022 summer intensive language programs!

The Summer Language Institute (www.sli.pitt.edu) at the University of Pittsburgh is accepting applications to summer 2022 programs in Pittsburgh and abroad, as well as to our trademark 10-week Pitt+abroad programs. SLI is planning a primarily in-person program in 2022, but will offer a limited number of online, synchronous sections for some of our most in-demand languages, and we welcome inquiries from students about the availability of their preferred instructional format.

Our priority application due date for best funding consideration is March 1, which is also the deadline to be considered for a summer FLAS scholarship from Pitt’s CREEES. Our 2022 languages are:

Prof. Dev: Pushkin House Translation Residency, London

Pushkin House is delighted to announce an open call for the next Pushkin House Translation Residency which will take place in 2022.

The aim of the programme is to facilitate cultural exchange between the Russian-speaking and English-speaking creative communities; to support the translation of contemporary Russian literature; and to provide a fertile environment for the creation of an original translation of an outstanding piece of Russian writing. Following the success of the previous residency, which resulted in the publication of new translations by Helena Kernan of poems by Galina Rymbu in Modern Poetry in Translation, Pushkin House wants to explore new connections and create new opportunities.

Prof. Dev: Bristol Translates 2022-Literary Translation Summer School (University of Bristol, UK)

Bristol Translates summer school takes place entirely online, making it accessible to participants around the world. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 12 students.

There will be three full days of translation workshops, on Monday 4, Wednesday 6 and Friday 8 July, while Tuesday 5 and Thursday 7 July will be devoted to sessions on genres and tools as well as professional and networking sessions. These include panels with publishers and themed sessions on translating for the theatre, translating children’s and young adult literature, the use of CAT tools in literary translation, translating video games and poetry translation. There will be expert speakers discussing translator contracts in the UK and in the USA, and a presentation by English PEN.

Intergenerational Trauma in Refugee Communities

This book proposes to explore intergenerational/generational trauma, or ways in which trauma experienced by one generation affects the well-being of future generations, among refugee communities displaced throughout the world. The book will focus on legacy of trauma and how historical, cultural, and economic trauma affect survivors’ future generations. While trauma research literature documents single-episode effects of trauma, the long-term and intergenerational effects of traumatic experiences across refugee communities and cultural contexts is still a gap in the literature. This book seeks to include patterns and findings across disciplines, cultural contexts, and methodologies addressing how transmission of trauma occurs in specific refugee communities.
