Conference: Art as a Form of Freedom During the Totalitarian Communist Regime. Forbidden music and fate of repressed musicians in the period 9.1944-10.1989

I. The Conference is part of the international project REMEMBER: Research and Music CommEMorating the Victims of Totalitarian Regimes in Bulgaria and Eastern EuRope. The project involves 5 non-governmental organizations from 5 countries, which deal with the history of the totalitarian communist regimes in the former socialist countries. 
It is designed to promote civil participation and engagement in events commemorating the victims of totalitarian regime, with a special emphasis on involvement of youth in dedicated activities requiring active input and targeted efforts for developing of common European consciousness of the historical heritage.The Conference “Art as a Form of Freedom During the Totalitarian Communist Regime. Forbidden music and fate of repressed musicians in the period 9.1944-10.1989 “ brings together representatives of the Bulgarian research community, musicians and the project partners from Germany, Croatia, Romania and Albania who will discuss on themes related to the culture and trauma in the totalitarian regimes. The conference will be accompanied by the opening of a traveling exhibition, which contains 30 boards with the stories of the forbidden music and the fates of musicians during communism and a second exhibition with portraits of prisoners, secretly drawn by Petar Baichev – a doctor of law and artist- during his almost five years stay in Belene camp.Part of the conference is the visit to the Belene Labor Camp on Persin Island.The new published disk with the songs from the REMEMBER SONG CONTEST will be presented.

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies seeks an Engagement Coordinator to serve as a core member of the Engagement Team at the University Center for International Studies (UCIS). The REEES Engagement Coordinator will be the primary coordinator for the educational outreach programming initiated within the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. More broadly, the Engagement Coordinator will promote regional studies across a broad range of disciplines and foreign languages in outreach activities coordinated with UCIS academic centers and units, student clubs, K-16 teachers and students, locally based international organizations, other major universities, community colleges and Title III/Title V eligible institutions.

The successful applicant’s tenure home will be in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures & Cultures, a dynamic academic unit committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue among faculty with diverse geographical interests, theoretical concerns, and methodological approaches. The International Student and Scholar Advisor is an active member of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISS) and advises a heavy caseload of F1 and J1 visa students on legal matters which affect their maintenance of non-immigrant student status. The ISS Advisor is responsible for applying federal regulatory parameters to determine whether non-immigrant student and exchange faculty members are compliant with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS) regulations. Individual serves as a university “Designated School Official” (DSO) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and as an “Alternate Responsible Officer” (ARO) for the U.S. Department of State’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. The ISS Advisor works as part of a team to provide high-quality support services to international students and scholars including orientation, support with cultural adjustment, and a successful engagement with the DePaul community.

Acad. Job: Open Rank Professor in Russian Literature and Culture (UCLA)

The UCLA Department of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Languages and Cultures invites applications for an open-rank position (tenure-track or with tenure) in Russian literature and culture, beginning July 1, 2022. We are looking for applicants with Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, possessing native or near-native fluency in Russian and English. We are focusing on candidates with a specialization in Russian literature and culture of the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods (roughly from post-WW II to the present), coupled with competencies and research interests in areas of interdisciplinary focus within the UCLA Humanities Division’s Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies (ELTS), particularly film, media studies, digital, environmental and medical humanities. Dynamic teaching skills are essential; responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, dissertation supervision, independent study courses and sharing in departmental administration, including the oversight of the Department’s various language programs (Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, BCS, Romanian and Hungarian).
