CFP: The 101st Kilometre: Provincial Marginality from Stalin to Gorbachev (University College, Oxford)

Paper proposals are invited for the workshop The 101st Kilometre: Provincial Marginality from Stalin to Gorbachev, to be held at University College, Oxford on July 20th 2020, co-organised by Dr Polly Jones (Oxford) and Dr Miriam Dobson (Sheffield). This one-day workshop, funded by the John Fell Fund of the University of Oxford, will explore the social and cultural consequences of the Soviet-era legislation barring various categories of the population (notably, many Gulag returnees) from settling closer than 100km to Moscow and Leningrad (50km from Kyiv). The workshop is the first, ‘pump-priming’ stage in planning a major international project comparing 101st kilometre communities, and we hope that participants in the workshop may wish to collaborate in the subsequent phases of the project. The workshop will feature intensive discussion by leading UK scholars of migration and marginality of pre-circulated papers by invited participants. Papers should be approx. 4000 words and submitted to discussants by mid-June 2020. The working languages of the workshop will be English and Russian.

Eurasia Foundation’s US-Russia Social Expertise Exchange Program (SEE) invites applications from independent professionals in the U.S. and Russia seeking to establish collaboration with international partner(s) in joint pursuit of solutions to one or more of the following issues: Social Inclusion, Technology and Innovation for Social Good, Social Entrepreneurship, and Youth Engagement. Successful applicants will travel to their counterpart country for a period of up to 21 days. While abroad, participants will be exposed to new skills, methods, and professional networks. After travel, independent professionals will implement activities to convey or apply their new knowledge and expertise for the benefit of their colleagues and community.

Eurasia Foundation’s US-Russia Social Expertise Exchange Program (SEE) invites organizations in the United States and Russia to submit proposals for collaborative projects in one or more of the following areas: Social Inclusion, Technology and Innovation for Social Good, Social Entrepreneurship, and Youth Engagement. SEE accepts applications that are jointly developed by at least one U.S. and one Russian partner organization and offers funding up to $43,000 for the implementation of joint initiatives.

Study Abroad: Russian Language, Culture and STEM Programs (Latvia)

“Learn Russian in the European Union” is accepting applications for 2020/2021 Academic Year and 2020 Fall Semester study abroad programs hosted at Daugavpils University, Latvia.

The following for-credit programs are available to Russian majors and students who are not majoring in Russian, but study the language:
– Russian Language and Political Science;
– Russian Language and East European Studies;
– Russian Language, Literature, and Culture;
– Russian Language and Natural Sciences/STEM (math, physics, biology, chemistry, and environmental studies) with theory and laboratory practice in English/Russian.

American and Canadian citizens do not need a visa to study in Latvia.

Daugavpils University awards up to 30 ECTS credits per semester – the equivalent of 15 credit hours at American universities.

Prof. Dev. : 2020 Summer Russian Language Teacher Program (American Councils)

The program offers current and prospective American teachers of Russian language and culture the opportunity to reach new levels of competency in Russian. The four-week program is designed to accommodate the particular professional interests and needs of teachers of Russian, incorporating grammar and conversation courses with lectures and workshops in culture and civilization, and foreign language pedagogy.

Location: Russian State Pedagogical University (RSPU) in St. Petersburg

Application deadline: February 18, 2020

The 2020 award will cover orientation in Washington, DC, international travel, visa, tuition, materials, housing, two meals per day, cultural excursions, and insurance costs for fifteen American teachers of Russian language.

ALEKSANTERI INSTITUTE VISITING FELLOWSHIPS 2020-2021
The Aleksanteri Institute is pleased to invite applications for its Visiting Fellowships for the academic year 2020-2021 from scholars holding a PhD degree and pursuing research that relates to the Institute’s research profile. The Fellowship carries a monthly grant of 3400 euros to cover all of the expenses related to the research visit, which can range from one to three months. The Visiting Fellowship scheme is intended for scholars who reside outside Finland.

Study Abroad/Internship: Slavic, Folklore, Ethnomusicology, and Cultural Anthropology

Students and scholars in Slavic studies, folklore, ethnomusicology and cultural anthropology have until January 31, 2020 to apply for scholarships and internships for PREEEF programs in Russia, Siberia and Kazakhstan.

The scholarship amount of $2000 supports participation in a folklore-collecting expedition led by a qualified Russian or Kazakh scholar. These expeditions are opportunities to establish international scholarly ties, improve language skills, and learn fieldwork techniques while conducting interviews, making video and audio recordings, serving as audiences and processing collected field materials. Expedition teams are immersed in local customs, language and food. Fluency in the local language is helpful, but not required.

The unpaid internship offers inexpensive housing in Moscow in exchange for 4-6 weeks with the Gorky Institute of World Literature, editing rough English translations of articles by Institute scholars. Interns acquire practical experience in scholarly publishing and receive guidance from IMLI staff for any personal research they wish to carry out in Moscow. Internships are offered only to PREEEF folklore expedition participants.

CFP: Folklore Panel Proposals (ASEEES Convention)

The Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Folklore Association [SEEFA], an ASEEES affiliate, issues an annual call for papers for the ASEEES convention to be held in Washington DC, 5-8 November 2020.

Participation in our panels does not require SEEFA membership. We welcome participation not only from folklorists, but also from specialists representing all fields of study, including literature, anthropology, and history.

We will consider any proposals submitted that relate to folklore and will try to form panels and / or roundtables from these submissions.

The ASEEES deadline for submission of panels is 15 February 2020. SEEFA will accept proposals until 5:00 CST on 5 February 2020.

The Department of Russian Language, Literature, and Culture at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, beginning July 2020, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian.

About
Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, selective liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Together, the two divisions enroll approximately 2900 students. Oberlin College was the first college in the US to make interracial education and co-education central to its mission. Responsibilities
The incumbent will teach a total of five courses, including Russian language courses at either the introductory or intermediate level and several topical courses in English or Russian in the general area of Soviet and post-Soviet literature and culture (including cinema and media, music, visual art, performance, anthropology, or other areas). The incumbent will also participate in and contribute to a range of activities outside the classroom sponsored by the Russian Department and Russian and East European Studies.
