Standard-Based Approaches to Teaching Polish Language
May 11, 2019
Organized by: Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago
Location: Northwestern University, Kresge Hall, Room 1515, Evanston IL

This workshop will bring together instructors to share their practices and materials, as they relate to teaching Polish.  The focus of this workshop will be on standard-based approaches to teaching language, especially alongside ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language, www.actfl.org) proficiency and world-readiness standards.  This workshop will serve as a forum for exchange of the most successful topics, projects, and syllabi from the most recent years of teaching, across participants’ institutions.

Prof. Devt: ACFL Summer Institute (UW Madison)

Deadline for Applications: May 3, 2019

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced a 2019 ACFL Proficiency and Performance Summer Institute on their campus. The institute will include a dedicated 4-day ACTFL OPI Assessment Workshop in Russian.

The dates of the OPI-Russian workshop are June 3-6.

Participants in the workshop will be introduced to the ACTFL rating scale, the structure of the OPI, and techniques for administering and rating the OPI. Participants will observe and conduct practice interviews across all proficiency levels, Novice through Superior. Participation in this workshop is the first step toward becoming an ACTFL-certified OPI Tester with Full Certification. Lang. Training: ASPIRANTUM Summer Language School (Yerevan, Armenia)

Applications have opened for Aspirantum Persian, Russian and Armenian language summer school! The school, located in Yerevan, Armenia, offers both 3-week and 6-week programs for students at all levels.

Prof. Devt: STARTALK Summer Program on Pedagogy (Middlebury)

Deadline for Applications: March 25, 2019

The STARTALK Institute at Middlebury is intended for current and prospective teachers of Russian. The principles of second language acquisition and proficiency-based instruction will serve as the foundation for this intensive pedagogy program.

The Institute is a fantastic place for teachers of Russian – novice and experiences alike – to explore the principles of second language acquisition and proficiency-based instruction amidst the blue mountains of Vermont. It includes 10 days of online classes and a residential session on campus, both required.

Online Session: June 24 – July 3, 2019 (required)
Residential Session on Middlebury Campus: July 7 – 21, 2019 (required)
