Job: Resident Director in Narva, Estonia (U. of Pittsburgh)

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies (REES) is seeking a qualified Resident Director (RD) to accompany a group of undergraduates to Narva, Estonia this summer.  The program runs for 8 weeks—from June 18 – August 13, 2017—though the RD will likely need to arrive one week before the students.  While in Narva, the students will engage in the intensive study of Russian at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year levels.  In addition to formal class time, students participate in a comprehensive set of lectures and excursions.

Job: Resident Director in Moscow, Russia (ACES)

American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES) is seeking a qualified
Resident Director (RD) to work on site with a group of 15 US high
school students for an approximately six-week (approximately from the
end of June to mid August) program in Moscow, Russia through the
National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. In
Russia, students will engage in language learning in both formal
(language courses) and informal settings (host family living). The RD
is required to attend a two-day pre-program training in Bellevue, WA
(late May to early June), attend a student orientation in Washington
D.C., represent ACES for the duration of the program in Moscow, and
submit a final report at the end of the program.

NSLI-Y is a US State Department sponsored scholarship program funded
by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. American High
School Students apply for merit-based scholarships to spend a summer,
semester, or academic year studying less commonly taught languages in
an international immersion setting. NSLI-Y encourages beginning,
intermediate, and advanced language learners with a passion for
learning languages, communicating across cultures, and living abroad
to apply. Participants are U.S. high school students between 15 and 18
years of age, who have beginner, intermediate or advanced Russian
language skills. The Resident Director will help administer the

Academic Program: Trans-Siberian Study Abroad Program (Univ. of New Hampshire)

Unique Trans-Siberian Study Abroad Program, University of New Hampshire

What is the program?
The UNH Russia Program is a unique summer study abroad opportunity for all interested students to experience first-hand the vastness of Russia. Students travel with UNH faculty and study Russian language, culture, and history with stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a trip across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! Visits include cultural, historical, and political venues (including the Duma, Kremlin, Hermitage, WWII bunker, Gulag Museum, Tatar hat workshop, hiking around Lake Baikal, participate in traditional Russian folk wedding, Lenin’s house in Gorki, banya, Russo-Japanese war fortresses and bunkers in Vladivostok) with readings and discussion at each site.

4 Week and 8 Week Programs
4 Week program: Earn 8 UNH credits studying culture and history while traveling to St. Petersburg, Moscow and on to Siberia, with stops in Kazan, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk,Lake Baikal, Arkhan (a village in Buryatiya) and ending in Vladivostok. No prior study of Russian language is required. Survival Russian included in pre-departure and in-country work. All students with an interest in Russian history, politics and culture should apply.

8 Week program: After the above 4 weeks of travel, students stay in Moscow and have language classes taught by faculty from Language Link. Earn an addition 8 credits studying Russian language (grammar, conversation and phonetics at the appropriate level.)

Pre-departure orientation sessions (via Skype/video) and pre-departure assignments (reading, lectures and work done on-line with a UNH faculty member.)

Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the full expanse of Russia!

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for the position of Director of the Russian Language Program. This appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer, with a three-year renewable term, pending budgetary approval. Duties include:

* Overseeing and assessing the integrity, coherence, and effectiveness of the department’s Russian language sequence.
* Mentoring (including orientation and training) and evaluation of instructors in the Russian language program.
* Assessment of student outcomes on a regular basis to comply with external and internal reporting requirements.
* Teaching assignments will include primarily Russian language, literature, and culture at the undergraduate level, with others as needed. Non-teaching duties include oversight of the Undergraduate Russian Club and other cultural and outreach activities, Russian placement and proficiency testing, and program assessment.

Study Abroad: Summer University Programs (NRUHSE)

The Summer University at the HSE is a new initiative designed to provide students, PhD candidates, postdocs and professionals from around the world with unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge in area studies and beyond. Offering a broad interdisciplinary selection of courses, the Summer University is open to all students and will be of particular interest to those who study International Relations, History, Political Science and other social sciences and humanities. Many of the courses, taught in English, focus on the politics, history, economics and culture of Russia and Eurasia.

Tuition and Fees

Programme fee:

  • $150 USD per credit
  • $177 USD per credit (if participant takes less than 3 ECTS credits total)

Programme fee covers:
– tuition,
– accommodation support*,
– visa support,
– at least one sight-seeing tour and social events.

*Accommodation support involves help with booking a place in one of HSE dormitories. The cost of accommodation (5 400 RUB/month) is not included in the programme fee.

Call for Applications! Summer Research Laboratory 2017

The Summer Research Laboratory (SRL) on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia is open to all scholars with research interests in the Russian, East European and Eurasian region for eight weeks during the summer months from June 12 until August 4. The SRL provides scholars access to the resources of the world renowned Slavic, East European, and Eurasian collection within a flexible time frame where scholars have the opportunity to receive one-on-one research assistance from the librarians of the Slavic Reference Service (SRS).

The deadline for grant funding is March 15 and is fast approaching! REEEC will continue to receive applications for the Summer Research Lab after the grant deadline, but housing and travel funds will not be guaranteed.

For graduate students, the SRL provides an opportunity to conduct research prior to going abroad and extra experience to refine research skills and strategies.  Students will also have the opportunity of seeking guidance from specialized librarians in navigating resources pertaining to and originating from Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia.

The SRS is an extensive service that provides access to a wide range of materials that center on and come from: Russia, the Former Soviet Union, Czech and Slovak Republics, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. The International & Area Studies Library, where the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian reference collection is housed, contains work stations for readers, research technologies, a collection of authoritative reference works, and provides unlimited access to one of the largest collections for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies in North America.

Prof. Devel.: Int’l Facult Devel. Seminar “World Fuels: Global Trends and Eurasian Perspectives” (CIEE)

Join CIEE this summer in Moscow for our International Faculty Development Seminar entitled, “World Fuels: Global Trends and Eurasian Perspectives”  (https://www.ciee.org/international-faculty-development-seminars/russia/energy-policy/). The program takes place June 6 to June 15th.

This program offers opportunities for U.S. faculty and researchers to take part in a global energy dialogue by exploring issues in energy diplomacy with leading Russian academic experts and practitioners. Drastic changes in economic and political contexts make global energy security one of the major driving forces of international relations. The issues of market efficiency, energy shortages, price volatility, and the “game of pipelines” are at the edge of every national security agenda. As one of the major players on global energy scene, Russia has a critical role in the world energy system.

The program will be led by Dr. Irina Bolgova, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Analysis at Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO).

The Center for Comparative Conflict Studies (CFCCS) at the Faculty of Media and Communications (FMK), Singidunum University invites you to apply for the 8th International Summer School in Comparative Conflict Studies. The 2017 Summer School will take place at the Faculty of Media and Communications in Belgrade, from June 25 to July 2, 2017.

The Summer School in Comparative Conflict Studies provides a learning opportunity for students interested in the study and analysis of societies in and post-conflict. Interdisciplinary in its nature, drawing from the fields of Conflict Analysis and Resolution, History, Philosophy, Anthropology, Education, Law and International Relations, the Summer School in Comparative Conflict Studies provides students with an interactive learning experience utilizing frontal lectures and class discussions focusing on comparative conflict analysis of different case studies.

Language Training: Summer Study Abroad Programs (Poland)

This is to let you know that the 2017 Summer Study Abroad programs and application forms have posted to the Foundation’s web-site.  All programs and sessions are now open and we invite you to apply!

It’s going to be an exciting summer!  There are 3-, 4-, and 6 week programs at the Jagiellonian University (JU) and 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-week programs at the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin aka KUL.

Apply either as a paying student or for a KF scholarship.  All paying students who will be 18 years old and will have a high school diploma by the first day of the program will be accepted.

Not all students who apply for a scholarship will receive funding, but we’ll save a seat for you in the program in case you intend to go whether you receive funding or not.

An important note: There is a limited amount of space in Session A which spends 3 weeks in Krakow and 1 week in the resort town of Szczawnica.  To guarantee your space in the program, apply by March 20th! Payment is required when you apply.

We’re accepting applications and payment for all other programs through May 18th.  All students who are eligible are accepted. 

Students who are applying for a KF scholarship must apply by April 17th.  See details posted under the heading Tomaszkiewicz-Florio Scholarships, Frances E. Wyszynski Scholarship and Wisconsin Study in Poland Scholarship.  Details vary so read carefully! We’re reserving a number of spaces in Session A for any scholarship applicant who applies for Session A so that scholarship applicants need not worry about the March 20th deadline for Session A.  Scholarship decisions will be announced in May.

Language Training: Russian Language Summer Schools (Omsk State University)

With a mission to deliver a learning experience that is exciting and engaging, Dostoevsky OmSU offers 2 summer courses with fixed start dates in July and August for international students who are interested in learning Russian language and would like to delve into Russian traditional culture.

Russian Language Summer School in July (Intensive General Russian) is a 3-week intensive program that aims to provide students with the opportunity to practice all main skills in Russian, reinforce and enrich their knowledge of Russian and includes 102 academic hours of tuition.

Course Fees: 45 000 RUB (approx. 700 €/750 USD)

Upon the completion of the program, students will get the Russian Language School Certificate (6-7 ETCS).

Russian Language Summer School in August is a 2-week program that covers a balance of language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), grammar at an appropriate level from beginner to advanced and includes 72 academic hours of tuition.

Course Fees: 30 000 RUB (approx. 470 €/500 USD)

Upon the completion of the program, students will get the Russian Language School Certificate (3 ETCS).

Russian Language classes are taught by experienced language teaching professionals (teachers of Russian as a Foreign Language) and follow a communicative approach to language teaching. In addition to in-class Russian language instruction, students will attend lectures of cultural and academic interest.

The social and cultural programs of Summer Schools are designed to help participants gain a valuable overview of Russian culture based on local heritage. We want to show participants the wide diversity of Russian culture, which is why we have built a great program for participants to keep them learning, exploring Omsk and experiencing new things.
