Hobart and William Smith Colleges seeks a sociocultural anthropologist to fill a one-year replacement position with a full-time (3-2) teaching load to begin July 1, 2017. We seek candidates with a serious commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education who are able to teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, a geographical area course, a topical course, an upper-level seminar, and one other offering to be determined. Preference will be given to candidates with field research experience in South Asia and in geographical areas other than Africa, Native North America, or Latin America.

Evidence of preparedness for excellent teaching and active scholarship are required.  Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. but ABD applicants may be considered.

Funding Opportunity: Peace Fellowship Application (Rotary)

Peace Fellowship Application

Each year, Rotary funds some of the world’s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centers. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution; many go on to careers in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank.

Applications for the 2018-19 Rotary Peace Fellowship program are now being accepted. The deadline for applicants to submit applications to their district is 31 May. Districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July.

Eligibility requirements

The Rotary Peace Fellowship is designed for professionals with work experience in international relations or peace and conflict prevention and resolution. Our fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace.

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:

  • Proficiency in English; proficiency in a second language is strongly recommended
  • Strong commitment to international understanding and peace as demonstrated through professional and academic achievements and personal or community service
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Master’s degree applicants: minimum three years of related full-time work or volunteer experience, bachelor’s degree
  • Certificate applicants: minimum five years of related full-time work or volunteer experience, strong academic background

The 11th Annual Russian Summer School on Institutional Analysis “The EU Practices for Young Researchers: Studying Economics of Institutional Development” (RSSIA 2017) is organized by the Center for Institutional Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics (CInSt, HSE). We focus on recent developments in NIE and possibilities and challenges of applied research in the institutional economics framework. RSSIA 2017 is aimed at disseminating the best practices of institutional change and effective institutional reforms to assure their successful application at the less developed markets and the economies in or immediately after the transition. The schedule of the Summer School includes lectures, seminars and plenty of possibilities to discuss the participants’ research projects.
Priority in the selection will be given to research projects that are related to the following fields:
— Economics of public sector, bureaucracy, and procurement
— Economics of education

— Banks and financial markets
— Industrial organization, government regulation, and law enforcement
— Property rights, institutions and economic development
There is no registration fee. Organizers cover participants’ accommodation and meals costs. However, participants cover their travel and visa costs.
All RSSIA participants will have an opportunity:
— to attend the lectures of distinguished experts in various spheres of institutional economics and adjoining disciplines;

Funding Opportunity: Russian Studies Workshop Summer Russian Study Fellowship (Indiana U.)

The Russian Studies Workshop (RSW) at Indiana University (IU) is offering $6500 to cover tuition/mandatory fees (approximately $3000), and living costs to eligible students who enroll in a 6-credit graduate Russian course in the IU Summer Language Workshop (SLW) during the Summer 2017 session.

Eligibility:  Students who: 1) are entering a PhD program in a social science discipline at a US university in Fall 2017; and 2) intend to study Russian at any level in SLW from June 5 to July 28, 2017.

Academic Program: Maymester in Russia 2017 (Vanderbilt U.)

Vanderbilt University’s Russian Department is offering a Maymester cultural immersion program in Russia for May-June 2017(RUSSIAN 2210: Russia Today: Political, Socio-economic, and Cultural Change).

The program includes community service, lectures on topics being explored by participants (politics, economics, sociology, culture, history, art, etc.), Russian language lessons, interaction with Russian university students, excursions to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and provincial towns, home stays, and opportunities for reflection.

The Midwest Slavic Association and The Ohio State University (OSU) Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) are pleased to announce the 2017 Midwest Slavic Conference to be held at OSU April 7-9, 2017. Conference organizers invite proposals for panels or individual papers addressing all disciplines related to Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and Southeastern Europe. The conference will open with a keynote address by Anne Garrels about her latest book, Putin Country: A Journey into the Real Russia on Friday, April 7th, followed by two days of panels.

Please send a one-paragraph abstract and a brief C.V. in a single PDF format tocsees@osu.edu by January 20th. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate. Limited funding is available for undergraduate and graduate student lodging with preference given to out-of-state participants.

Academic Program: The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (U. of Wisconsin-Madison)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is currently accepting applications for intensive study of Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. CESSI 2017 will take place at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, June 19 – August 11, 2017. Information and application materials are available here:  creeca.wisc.edu/cessi

Funding Opportunities:
  • New for 2017: Title VIII Fellowships for graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens. Fellowships will cover tuition and fees, as well as provide a stipend of $2,500 to cover living expenses for the summer
  • FLAS Fellowships for U.S. citizens and permanent residents
  • Fee Remission (scholarship)
**Please note: the priority deadline to apply to CESSI has been moved up to February 1, 2017. Applicants interested in a UW-Madison FLAS Fellowship must complete a separate FLAS Application by February 13, 2017. (Students from FLAS-granting institutions should apply for funding from their home campus before applying for a UW-Madison FLAS). CESSI will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis until April 3, 2017. However, financial support is not guaranteed for applications submitted after February 1.
Scheduling of all courses is contingent upon enrollment. Students should apply to CESSI as early as possible to help ensure that their desired class will be offered. CESSI 2017 will also feature a weekly lecture series (in English) on various topics of interest to people in the field of Central Eurasian studies and a rich program of cultural events and field  trips related to the countries of Central Eurasia.

The CESSI consortium is comprised of international and area studies centers at major U.S. universities working together to provide high-quality, summer instruction in the languages and cultures of Central Eurasia.
