The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is an 8-week summer intensive language learning program for languages such as Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek and hosted in Madison, Wisconsin. More information about CESSI can be found at https://cessi.wisc.edu.

If you are interested in applying for any CESSI-administered funding, like the Title VIII fellowship or CESSI Tuition Remission, now’s the time to get all your materials in! This includes the following items:

As a note, it’s okay if we receive your letters of recommendation a couple of days after the priority deadline, so long as you give us notice and you have all of your other materials in before midnight on February 1, 2023.

After the February 1 priority deadline, we will still accept applications on a rolling basis until April 1, 2023. Applications received by the priority deadline will determine which courses we will be able to offer for summer 2023, and applying by the priority deadline is your best chance to receive funding for the summer. We expect to send out admissions decisions to priority applicants throughout March and April, though we will keep everyone updated should this change.

Study Abroad: RLASP Program in Tbilisi, Georgia with American Councils

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce that its Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) will also be offered for summer study in Tbilisi, Georgia beginning in 2023. For more than 40 years, American Councils programs have provided U.S. students of Russian unique opportunities to engage with the Russian speaking world through intensive study and cultural immersion designed to produce measurable gains in language proficiency and cultural understanding.

The program provides approximately 20 hours per week of intensive Russian language instruction, housing with Russian speaking host families, practice with conversation partners, weekly cultural activities, extended group travel to explore Georgia, and a rich array of opportunities to engage with the host country culture through extracurricular and volunteer activities. A fully trained U.S. Resident Director provides ongoing logistical support and assistance, including 24-hour emergency aid, to participants throughout the program. The American Councils office in Tbilisi is also available to assist and support program participants throughout their time in country. The program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of Russian language study.

CFP: Character Assassination, Illiberalism, and the Erosion of Civic Rights

On June 21-23, the University of Amsterdam and VU University in collaboration with CARP (the Research Lab for Character Assassination and Reputation Politics) and the Illiberalism Studies Program will host the interdisciplinary conference “Character Assassination, Illiberalism, and the Erosion of Civic Rights”. We invite all scholars of Slavic, East European Studies and Eurasian Studies to submit an abstract.

Liberal democracies face multiple external challenges from autocracies across the world, as well as internal challenges from populist politicians, nativism, and the normalization of incivility in media and political discourses. Character assassination (CA) often accompanies these political and social conflicts, especially when unresolved ideological and moral issues are involved. Social conflicts become aggravated when moral issues intermix with political and economic factors. Factions then resort to persuasive attacks on character to delegitimize and disempower their opponents. This increased polarization and aggressiveness of elite rhetoric likely foster voters’ cynicism and discontent with politics as usual. The increasing gap between liberal elites and the disgruntled electorate, in turn, likely provides even more fertile ground for intra-elite conflict, and paves the way for illiberal conceptions of the democratic order.

Prof. Dev: 2023 ACTR Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship Opportunity

American Councils and ACTR are pleased to announce the 2023 Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship Opportunity at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We kindly ask your assistance in drawing this opportunity to the attention of potentially interested colleagues.

Fifteen (15) U. S. teachers will be accepted and funded for participation in the 2023 program, which will consist of small group work, individual tutorials, and seminars based on a curriculum which emphasizes four-skill communication in contemporary Russian, clarity and confidence of teacher self-expression, advanced grammar in context, and an expanded understanding of the diverse peoples and cultures that make up the Russian-speaking world today.

The ACTR Board has recommended a priority in 2023 for in-service K-12 teachers and university-level instructors or teaching fellows holding a teaching appointment for AY 2023-24. Applications from teachers serving historically under-represented US populations are particularly encouraged.

TANDEM, Author with translator – Translator with author is a program exclusively dedicated to literati, writers and translators, with the aim to promote authors from the Black Sea Region by encouraging the translation of their work into the local languages. Moreover, the program will deepen and disseminate the knowledge in and about the literary landscapes around the Black Sea and raise esteem for people and procedures involved.

The fellowship program targets writers and translators from: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine. Applicants from the Baltics or the Western Balkans may be considered under special circumstances.

CFA: Global Russian Academy

The war in Ukraine and ongoing crackdown in Russia threaten to plunge Russian social sciences and humanities into a new isolation and wipe out over three decades of internationalization and transnational exchange.

To address these challenges, the Russian Global Academy helps the Russian academic diaspora to self-organize and maintain a degree of solidarity and cohesion. We aim to preserve Russian scholarly communities by supporting digital professional ecosystems and offering flexible solutions in a transition period.

A DC-based consortium of three universities (GWU, Georgetown, and American University), the Academy delivers short-term non-residential fellowships to Russian scholars in emigration, provides support for conference travel, and assists in editing and publishing scholarly work.

Acad. Job: Lector/Senior Lector I in Russian Language (Yale University)

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Yale University invites applications for a Lector/Senior Lector I in Russian language. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2023, with the teaching beginning at the start of the fall semester 2023. This is a 3-year full-time appointment with renewal contingent on excellent performance and sufficient enrollments. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications. If the initial appointment is at the rank of Lector, a promotion review for Senior Lector I must take place in the fifth year or earlier. Senior lectors at Yale are expected to participate in teaching-related professional activities (e.g., workshops, seminars, training activities, conferences) and have no limits on reappointment, provided the performance is successful and there is ongoing curricular need. The successful hire may be considered for the position of the Language Coordinator.

Primary duties include teaching 6 courses per academic year, which can be realized through teaching 5 term courses in the language sequence and providing 1 course equivalent of administrative, pedagogical, or other service in support of the academic priorities of the University. Lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits, including health coverage, and they are encouraged to participate in the wide range of professional development opportunities offered through the Center for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.

Majors/fields: Foreign area studies, computer science, business administration, human resources, public administration, international relations, legal studies, political science, STEM fields, engineering or intelligence analysis

When: May to August over a 10–12-week period. Internship announcements typically open in September or October.

STOKES is a needs-based program offering tuition assistance to students enrolled at accredited colleges or universities, while providing challenging summer work and guaranteed employment in their field of study upon graduation. You will attend classes full-time during the academic year and work at DIA full time during the summer in positions related to your course of study. Once you graduate, you must commit to working at DIA for up to 18 months of continued service for each academic year of the STOKES educational sponsorship. You will also receive other federal and DIA benefits like annual and sick leave, federal holidays, the Civilian Fitness Program, foreign language program and Mass Transit Benefit Program.To be eligible, you must:

Be a U.S. citizen.
Be enrolled or seeking enrollment in an undergraduate degree program.
Be a high school student in your senior year at the time of application.
Have a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale.
Have exhibited leadership abilities through your extracurricular student activities, civic involvement, volunteer work or part-time employment.
As a college freshmen or sophomore, you will need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
All immediate family members have U.S. citizenship.
Maintain a security clearance. Dual citizenship holders are not eligible to receive a security clearance through this program.
