Internal Graduate Admissions

UT students applying for a further graduate degree

Currently-enrolled UT students, both undergraduate and graduate, applying to start a new graduate degree program or Artist Diploma must submit both a graduate school application and a supplemental music application.

Continuing applicants in performance areas that require prescreening are automatically waived through the prescreening round and do not need to submit video, but must submit all other required application materials. Continuing applicants in composition, conducting, musicology/ethnomusicology, music theory and Music & Human Learning must submit complete application materials as appropriate.

UT graduate student change of major

Currently-enrolled UT graduate students applying to change major codes without completing their current program must seek faculty approval, then submit a new graduate school application. Faculty in the destination major may or may not ask the student to provide supporting materials as appropriate to the area (e.g., writing samples, composition samples, or an audition), but a supplemental music application is not usually required.

Students wishing to change programs within the same major code (e.g., from opera performance to voice pedagogy) do NOT need to submit a graduate application, although there may be other procedures required by faculty or the graduate coordinator,  Marina Martinez.

UT graduate student readmission

After a break in enrollment of any length, a former UT graduate student who wishes to return to school must submit a graduate readmission application in UTDirect. Former UT graduate students do NOT need to submit a new graduate school application. Students who are applying to start a new program and most students who are applying to resume an incomplete program must also submit a supplemental music application.

Students who are reapplying to end an approved and official leave of absence do NOT need to submit a new supplemental music application. For these students, the graduate school application fee is waived and readmission is automatic.
