Funding Opportunity: ADSEEES Grant Competition for Grad Students & Contingent Faculty (ASEEES)

The Association for Diversity in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ADSEEES) is pleased to announce a competitive grants competition aimed at subsidizing attendance of the 2017 ASEEES Convention in Chicago, IL (November 9-12th). Through its grant competition, ADSEEES seeks to foster diversity and inclusion within the field of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Applicants from all backgrounds who have shown a demonstrated commitment to the principles outlined in the ADSEEES Mission Statement, either through their research, teaching, or service to the profession, are encouraged to apply.

These grants have been made possible through generous funding from the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES); the Institute for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES) at the University of California-Berkeley; the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University; the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center at Indiana University Bloomington; and the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at Stanford University.

Available Grants:
1. Graduate Convention Travel Grant (3 grants available)
  • Three grants are available in the amount of $500 each
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an M.A. or Ph.D. program at the time of the convention
  • One of these grants is earmarked for a student whose research focuses on one or more of following countries: Azerbaijan, Estonia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and/or Uzbekistan.
2. Faculty Convention Travel Grant (1 grant available):
  • Open to contingent faculty (defined as adjunct and limited-term faculty, lecturers, instructors, or independent research scholars who do not have access to institutional travel funding)
  • One grant is available in the amount of $500
Instructions for Applicants:

Please submit a short essay (500 words maximum) that explains how attending the 2017 ASEEES conference fits into your career goals, and how your research, teaching, and/or service to the profession align with the values and principles outlined in the ADSEEES mission statement (see below). Please submit your essay along with CV to adseees.diversity@gmail.com by July 31st. To be eligible for this grant, your name must appear (in any capacity) in the ASEEES convention program.

For PhDs, please note that if you are coming from outside the US, a conference fee of up to $35 will be removed from your total award.

The Association for Diversity in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ADSEEES) is dedicated to better connecting and expanding the network of underrepresented minority students, scholars, and professionals working in the field. ADSEEES is committed to improving general understanding of the unique experiences of racial, ethnic, and religious minorities, members of the LGTBQ community, people with disabilities, and trans and gender/queer individuals who study, teach, and/or conduct research in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. ADSEEES also seeks to serve as a platform for academic discussions of minoritarian cultures in the region both historically and in the present day.
