Funding: Pitt Project GO Russian Programs for ROTC Students, Summer 2022

Deadline: January 12, 2022

The University of Pittsburgh invites Army, Navy/Marine, and Air Force ROTC students from any US college or university to apply for a Pitt Project GO (Global Officers) scholarship for intensive study of 1st-4th year Russian in Summer 2022. Project GO is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Students who have not yet begun their pursuit of Russian are encouraged to apply for an 8-week Beginning-level class, which will cover the equivalent of one academic year’s worth of language training. An Intermediate-level class is also available. These classes, offered by Pitt’s Summer Language Institute (SLI), are held at the University’s main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh from June 6–July 29, 2022. Pitt Project GO domestic scholarships cover:
•       Full tuition for 8 University of Pittsburgh credits
•       Housing and a living stipend
•       Travel between the student’s home city and Pittsburgh
•       Textbooks

Students who have already begun studying Russian are encouraged to apply for an 8-week intensive abroad program at the Intermediate (2nd-year), Advanced (3rd-year), or 4th-year level. Classes are held at Narva College of the University of Tartu in Narva, Estonia from June 11–August 6, 2022. Pitt Project GO overseas scholarships cover:
•       Full tuition for 8 University of Pittsburgh credits
•       Housing and a living stipend
•       Travel between the student’s home city and Narva, Estonia
•       Textbooks

Narva, located on Estonia’s border with Russia, is a Russian-speaking city with a large ethnic Russian population. The program consists of intensive language classes, which emphasize communication skills; a lecture and film series, introducing students to topics in contemporary Russian and Baltic cultures and politics; and excursions within Narva and elsewhere in Estonia to showcase this unique region rarely visited by US students. Course objectives are to develop an active vocabulary in practical, everyday topics—particularly those which will prepare students for military service related to the Russian-speaking world—and to refine listening, reading, and writing skills. Classes in Narva meet daily on Monday through Friday. Students will also have weekly cultural lectures and excursions.

If pandemic conditions require cancellation of in-person programs in Summer 2022, an 8-credit online program covering equivalent course material will be offered.
