CFP: Translating Russian Literature in Global Context

Call for Submissions: Edited Volume on Translating Russian Literature in the Global Context (2023) 

Scholars with relevant expertise are invited to submit essays for a new edited volume on the global translation and reception of Russian literary fiction in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. “Translating Russian Literature in the Global Context” (2023) is intended to constitute the first geographically coherent, culturally inclusive, and theoretically consistent model of the distribution and influence of translated Russian literature on global cultures from 1900 to the present day. The editors seek articles of up to 8,000 words on aspects of the history and influence of Russian literature in translation in different cultures for an Open Access publication funded by the European Research Council in association with the University of Exeter RusTrans project (Grant Agreement no. 802437).

Please send abstracts of no more than 500 words, excluding bibliography, to the editors (Dr Muireann Maguire and Dr Cathy McAteer) at rustrans@exeter.ac.uk, by March 31st, 2021.

Call for Submissions: 2021 National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest (ACTR)

The American Council of Teachers of Russian is pleased to announce the 2021 National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest! Registration for the contest is open now. Deadline for registration for the 2021 Contest is Feb. 8th. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED! The contest should be held from February 15th to the 25th, and all essays must be submitted by Feb. 28th.

Please note that, barring any COVID-related setbacks, we hope to announce the essay contest results by mid-April. For more registration details and more information about the administration of the contest this year, please visit the ACTR website.

The Graduate Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey welcomes applications for the fifth Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia which will be held online from June 28 through August 4. We welcome applications from your best graduate students as well as emerging experts with commitment to the field of Eurasian Studies. Advanced Russian language skills are required. Prof. Devt: International Studies Research Lab (U. Illinois Urbana-Champaign)

The Center for Global Studies (CGS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is excited to announce the 2021 International Studies Research Lab (ISRL), an initiative that promotes the internationalization of community colleges nationwide. CGS invites applications from faculty, librarians, and administrators interested in expanding global and area studies curricula, instruction in less commonly taught languages, library collections, or international education programs at their home institutions. The Center is a National Resource Center supported by Title VI funds from the U.S. Department of Education.

Dates
The lab will be held in a virtual format from May 17th through July 30th. Applications are due March 16th.

CFP: Yoga in Russia: Past and Present (2021 ASEEES Convention)

We are seeking two to three participants for our panel “Yoga in Russia: Past and Present” at the 2021 ASEEES Convention in New Orleans. 

This panel seeks to examine the theory and practice of yoga in Russia as a peculiarly Russian phenomenon and as part of a global health and spiritual movement. Relevant topics include: 

  • Yogic practices as part of interest in “Eastern” wisdom in the late Russian Empire
  • The theory and practice of yoga in Russia as relation to those in the West
  • “Russian Yogis:” Elena Roerich, Indra Devi, and other practitioners and popularizers
  • Yoga in the Soviet Union

Acad Job: Visiting Lecturer in Russian Studies (Bates College)

The Department of German and Russian Studies at Bates College, a private liberal arts college located in central Maine, invites applications for (2) two-year term visiting positions in Russian Studies to begin in Fall 2021. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching underrepresented, first generation and marginalized students are encouraged to apply. Each position carries a four-course teaching load, including three courses in Russian language and one course in Russian history and culture taught in English. The positions entail teaching Russian language at all levels. The courses taught in English are expected to introduce undergraduates to key issues in Russian history and culture and contribute to the programs in European Studies, History and/or other disciplines. Preferred areas of specialization are the 20th and 21st centuries and a thematic focus on totalitarianism, ethnic and cultural diversity, or transregional connections (Eastern and Central Europe, Asia and Asia Minor, the Arctic, etc.).
