The Center for European Studies is a Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS granting institution with grants from the US Department of Education, the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, and international grants through the European Union. We are a multidisciplinary area and language studies center focused on expanding awareness, interest and training in European studies across campus and the broader community. The Center facilitates the training of scholars and experts in European studies by providing a wide range of area studies courses in disciplines including history, sociology, political science, film studies, law, education, business, musicology, and many more. The Center promotes the learning of European less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) through language programs in Czech, Hungarian, modern Greek, Polish, and Turkish, and supports the other European language programs on campus through funding opportunities and outreach activities.

Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow in Russian Studies. You will have research expertise and teaching experience in Russian Studies. You should be able to teach Russian literature, culture and history in a holistic way across different periods, with particular emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. You should have excellent Russian and also the ability to teach translation from Russian into English at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

If successful you will be fully integrated in the Russian Studies team within Durham University’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures and you will be expected to contribute to the delivery of teaching on the relevant programme, to include curriculum development, the convening of modules, all aspects of assessment, the supervision of final-year dissertations, and academic advising.

The role of Teaching Fellow offers the opportunity of valuable experience to those early in their academic career. Durham University is keen to maximise the career benefits of this role in terms of exposure to relevant departmental experience. The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant but rewarding teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, and includes administrative duties that relate to education.

The School of History, Archaeology and Religion at Cardiff University wishes to appoint a fixed-term full-time lecturer in Russian History. The post is for 12 months, to cover a period of externally funded leave. You will possess a record or potential for excellence in research in modern Russian History and evidence of high-quality teaching at undergraduate level.

The School is a dynamic and friendly department with an international reputation in research and teaching. Within the School, you will contribute to the continued development of the School’s teaching in European History, including teaching a second-year undergraduate module on Soviet History. You will contribute to the first-year module Making of the Modern World. You will also be expected to contribute to History’s jointly-taught core modules at undergraduate level. In addition to teaching, you will act as a personal tutor to students, engage in scholarly research and publication, and participate in administration at a departmental and / or School leve,l as required. The Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES) invites applications for a 3-year limited-term full-time appointment in Slavic Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor Without Review, effective August 1, 2022. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Slavic Studies or a related field. Fluency in Ukrainian and possibly a further Slavic language is required, in addition to fluency in English. Applicants’ primary research focus must be Ukraine and/or the broader region around Ukraine. Approaches from literary studies, cultural studies, film, media, applied linguistics, and the like are welcome. The successful candidate will teach larger Anglophone courses and, perhaps, language courses in the second and third year of the appointment.

Job posting: The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Russian Language and Culture, beginning August 2022. While area of specialization is open, we are seeking a dynamic and talented instructor of Russian who can contribute to department strengths in any of the following areas: film (Russian and East European), popular culture, gender, literature, migration studies, and translation. Qualified applicants must hold a PhD in Russian/Slavic languages and cultures or related discipline by the time of appointment and have teaching experience in North America. Fluency in Russian and English is required. Proficiency in another Slavic language is desired. The successful candidate will teach 22-24 credit hours per year, both in English and in Russian (lower-level language courses are 4 cr.). The final course load will depend on service assignments which may include curriculum development, undergraduate advising, student organization mentorship, among others. This is a one-year appointment with the potential for renewal.

The Department of History and the Armenian Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley seek to appoint a Lecturer in Armenian history for the 2022-23 academic year, with the possibility of renewal. In addition to courses in Armenian history, the successful appointee should be able to teach courses of a regional, thematic, or topical focus that include Armenia or the Armenian people.

Applicants should be fluent in Armenian and in English, and applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application. A PhD (or equivalent international degree) and demonstrated teaching experience at the college or university level are required by the start date. The Russian and Eurasian Studies Program at Colgate University invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies beginning fall semester 2022. Ph.D. required in Slavic Languages and Literatures with experience teaching Russian at the college level, or a Ph.D. in a related field with a certificate in Russian-language teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Russian language classes and an introductory survey class on Russia within the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum. The successful candidate will also be asked to teach an existing humanities elective in the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program, or to propose and teach a new humanities or interdisciplinary course related to their research area.
