The University of Kansas Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies seeks a shared full-time Administrative Associate. This position supports operations for both of these centers to facilitate an efficient office and the realization of our international education mission.

Duties include office management; financial reporting and support; curriculum and course scheduling; ordering office supplies; management of student workers and their projects; planning, logistics, and support for events, lectures, workshops, and conferences; creating and maintaining website and academic brochures; assistance in grant development and fundraising; and managing communications and the centers’ social media accounts. The application deadline is May 8 and review of applications begins May 9.

Job Description

Office Management – 40% Plan and manage physical space and office needs for the units, order supplies, and facilitate confidential shredding of materials Manage office invoices for both centers and identify funding sources/send to appropriate contact in SSC (Shared Service Center) Place orders on behalf of both units Serve as liaison for front-line technology support and IT liaison, Facility Services work orders Support for Russian Review journal and CREES and CLACS newsletters Manage / supervise supplies, account receivable/deposits, data/phone Services; procure furniture, obtain and control keys Attend staff meetings to discuss projects, programming, curriculum, events and personnel issues. Student hourly coordination: manage searches, train and supervise student hourly workers, approve time and leave, manage federal work study opportunities, and coordinate student hourly projects Email and communications management Update and enhance departmental websites and calendars as needed Other duties as assigned

Prof. Dev: Professional Workshop in Public Scholarship

ASU’s Melikian Center, in collaboration with ASU’s Narrative Storytelling Initiative, invites up to 10 participants to ASU’s Tempe campus for a three-day, in-person workshop on issues in public scholarship. Applications are invited from early-career scholars and practitioners (including advanced PhD and master’s students and recent graduates) with an interest in taking knowledge public. The workshop will explore different genres of writing, speaking, and publishing to effectively translate in-depth regional knowledge of Russia, Eurasia and East Europe to engage public and policy audiences.

The workshop will be led by ASU faculty affiliated with the Melikian Center including Keith Brown, Melikian Center Director; Candace Rondeaux, New America Fellow and Professor of Practice at the School of Politics and Global Studies; and Steven Beschloss, the director of the Narrative Storytelling Initiative and Professor of Practice at ASU’s Cronkite School of Journalism.

Hungarian Cultural Studies, e-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association, is a peer-reviewed, open access, no-fee scholarly journal, covering all aspects of Hungarian culture across the humanities and social sciences. Under the dynamic leadership of the founding Editor-in-Chief, Louise O. Vasvari, the journal has developed an excellent international reputation for publishing theoretically sophisticated and empirically grounded original research. In addition to full-length articles, the journal regularly publishes book reviews and bibliographies, and it supports emerging scholars from Hungary and neighboring states in helping them publish in English. The current Editor-in-Chief will step down following publication of the journal in August 2022. The Board of AHEA invites applications from scholars interested in taking on the role.

Minimum education requirement: Master’s degree in East European/Eurasian studies. Knowledge of one or more East European/Eurasian languages. 

Additional education desired: A degree or coursework in public policy, international affairs, or higher education administration. OR 2-3 years of program management experience in lieu of education.

POSITION SUMMARY

The CLS Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is an immersive language and cultural program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Each summer students spend eight-to-ten weeks abroad studying one of fifteen critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. In addition to summer study abroad programming, the CLS Program is developing innovative initiatives to engage with students virtually. By prioritizing inclusion and access, the CLS Program ensures that the next generation of America’s global leaders reflects its diversity.
Based in Washington, DC, the Program Officer for Russian and Persian reports to the CLS Program Manager and is responsible for program administration and logistics, communication with program participants and partnering institutions in regions providing Russian and Persian immersion language programs. The Program Officer will also remotely manage a team of Resident Directors. In addition, the Program Officer will work with a team of regional Program Officers to analyze program successes and challenges and work on projects to implement changes and improvements across program sites.
In addition to planning and managing in-person study abroad programs, the Program Officer will also work on virtual programming for Russian and Persian languages. Together with members of the CLS team, the Program Officer will also engage in recruitment and outreach activities, moderate selection panels and contribute to the implementation of alumni programming.
The position will require close attention to detail, the ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently, and a readiness to communicate with diverse groups of people. While organizational skills and administrative experience will be an important plus for any candidate, an extensive understanding of academic culture for study abroad programs is also important. Some travel will be required.

Acad. Job: Summer Instructor of Elementary Ukrainian (Arizona State University)

ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI) is seeking an instructor of Elementary Ukrainian for our 2022 summer institute.

The successful candidate will prepare a syllabus and teach Ukrainian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for seven weeks (May 31-July 15) on ASU Tempe campus. The Ukrainian instructor will also contribute to cultural programming, including a Ukrainian culture night and additional events based on students’ interest.
