Acad. Job: Summer Instructor of Elementary Ukrainian (Arizona State University)

ASU’s Critical Languages Institute (CLI) is seeking an instructor of Elementary Ukrainian for our 2022 summer institute.

The successful candidate will prepare a syllabus and teach Ukrainian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for seven weeks (May 31-July 15) on ASU Tempe campus. The Ukrainian instructor will also contribute to cultural programming, including a Ukrainian culture night and additional events based on students’ interest.

CFP: Graduate Methods Training Workshop – Virtual (University of Indiana)

We are pleased to be accepting applications for our third biannual Graduate Methods Training Workshop, hosted by the Russian Studies Workshop (RSW) at Indiana University’s Russian and East European Institute (REEI) with generous funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. This two-day event is geared towards doctoral students working on Russia-related topics within social science disciplines to workshop their planned methodologies, discuss research challenges, and learn interdisciplinary tools from experts in the field. The Graduate Methods Training Workshop aims to prioritize student needs by tailoring sessions towards their research goals, allowing students to negotiate the difficulties faced by contemporary scholars working on Russia. The goal of the workshop is to facilitate learning and dialogue with faculty specialists on qualitative and quantitative methods, including survey methods, datasets and digital methods, media and discourse analysis as well as addressing specific student research concerns. Beyond this, GMTW 2022 provides opportunities to present your own research via lightning-round sessions and practice proposal writing for research funding. GMTW 2022 will be held virtually, allowing students from all over North America to participate in dialogue with invited experts, meet a community of emerging Russianists, and to develop networking and professional opportunities for scholarly growth. We welcome applications from doctoral students in North America whose work is in the social sciences (including history).

SRAS Study Abroad Info Sessions

Please join SRAS info sessions to discuss your future study abroad program! We will go over funding and scholarship opportunities as well.

SRAS is gearing up for summer programs in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Batumi, Georgia as well as online from Warsaw, Poland. We are also accepting applications for fall programs in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as well as Chisinau, Moldova. Both programs will include intensive Russian-language study as well local cultural and travel programs that will introduce students to the unique peoples, cultures, and identities of these locations.

We will also have our Security and Society in the Information Age program in Warsaw, Poland this fall, a particularly pertinent program looking at European security and global security issues.

With so many students now in our Bishkek location, we’ve taken the opportunity to update and expand our Vegan and Vegetarian Guide to Bishkek, our guide to Fitness, Training, Gyms, and Jogging in Bishkek, and several other resources, now all linked from our giant SRAS Guide to Living in Bishkek.

Seminar: Q&A with Ukrainian Director

The University of Michigan’s Flying Subtitles Collective, a joint faculty-student initiative, invites all to a Zoom Q&A with Ukrainian director Antonio Lukich. Join us this Friday at 5pm Eastern Time US! Lukich is one of the most interesting new directors in the Ukrainian film scene. His first feature film, a lyrical, absurdist comedy called My Thoughts are Silent (2019), won major international awards at the Karlovy Vary film festival and other international ceremonies, and you can watch it this week by registering for the Q&A. We invite you for a lively conversation about contemporary cinema, humor and the absurd in popular culture, what it was like to work in the film industry before the war, what’s going on with Lukich’s long-awaited sequel to his first feature, and what his hopes are for the future of Ukrainian cinema.This one-hour-long event is geared toward students and makes for an excellent extra credit opportunity! We will be speaking to the director, who is in Ukraine currently, and raising funds for anti-war aid.

CFA: Diplomacy and International Governance Postdoctoral Project (Loughborough Univ., UK)

The successful candidate will join the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance (IDIG). We are looking for a proposal that will either further our current projects which span digital diplomacy, post-Brexit and bilateral diplomacy, diplomacy for peace and security, the politics of diplomacy, experimentalist governance, and foreign policy; or to bring something new, for example the challenges of diplomacy in the fields of sport, climate change and health.

We also welcome proposals that address the themes of sustainability, development and innovation through approaches that combine diplomacy or international governance with other theoretical or methodological lenses.

We would like to hear from candidates whose background – academic and/or professional – offers potential for international collaboration, and who wish to join a dynamic and diverse campus- Loughborough London – that is research-intensive with an entrepreneurial emphasis. If you have a great idea for a PhD in this area, then we’d love to hear it: do get in touch. You will need to provide a research proposal of no less than 500 words that outlines your idea, its significance, and proposed academic contribution.
